- "Ten sectors were sealed away behind a barrier that prevents hyperspace jumps into the Exclusion Zone. Communications in and out of this region have failed, and the Nihil have begun to expand their presence in the Outer Rim. Wherever they rule, horrific brutality follows."
- ―Harli Cogra about the Occlusion Zone sectors, in Chronicles of the Jedi
The Tolonda sector was a sector in the Outer Rim Territories and the Trailing Sectors that bordered the Lol and Pelgrin sectors. It contained the Branteez, Changa, Exu Prime, Goshyn, Julsujod, Krmar, Odona, Oshora, Pontus, and Tamra systems. During the High Republic Era, the sector fell within the Galactic Republic's Galactic Frontier exploration region. The Tolonda sector became part of the Occlusion Zone following its formation in 230 BBY as one of ten sectors sealed behind a barrier preventing hyperspace travel. During this time, the Jedi Master Porter Engle ambushed a Nihil patrol on the Tolonda sector astronomical object Exu Prime and stole their shuttle. In 228 BBY, the Stormwall's fall dissolved the Occlusion Zone.
By the Imperial Era, the Tolonda sector planet Odona had long been used by pirates and smugglers to avoid the Galactic Empire due to its extremely frigid climate and secret alcoves. At one point, the smuggler Han Solo left the criminal Frax for dead in Odona's Cordaxian Sea to escape from Imperial TIE fighters with his ship's payload—two tons of Cordaxian ore. Between 0 ABY and 3 ABY, Solo and Princess Leia Organa went on a mission to Odona to search for a suitable location for a new rebel base for the Alliance to Restore the Republic. When Solo was pursued by revenge-bent Frax, Organa managed to rescue him, and the pair subsequently departed Odona with rebel assistance after nearly freezing to death.
Description
The Tolonda sector was a space sector located in the Outer Rim Territories[1] and Trailing Sectors[3] that bordered the Lol and Pelgrin sectors.[1] It contained the Branteez, Julsujod, Odona, Oshora, and Tamra systems, which were situated in grid square Q-17 of the Standard Galactic Grid. It also contained the Changa and Goshyn systems, located in grid square Q-18. Also within the sector was the Krmar system, which was within grid square R-17, and the Exu Prime and Pontus systems, which were located in grid square R-18.[4] The Odona system contained[5] the frigid, rocky planet Odona.[6] The sector's Exu Prime[7] and Pontus systems[8] were home to the terrestrial astronomical object Exu Prime and the asteroid city Pontus, respectively.[9]
History
Harli Cogra documented the formation of the Occlusion Zone, of which the Tolonda sector was part, in Chronicles of the Jedi.
During the High Republic Era, the Galactic Republic designated a section of the Outer Rim—which included the Tolonda sector—as the Galactic Frontier, locations considered removed far enough from the galaxy's center to send explorers there.[2] In 230 BBY, the Nihil marauder organization formed the Occlusion Zone—an area of space in the Outer Rim's Frontier that was situated behind the Stormwall barrier preventing hyperspace travel.[10]
As one of the ten sectors forming the boundary of the Occlusion Zone, the Tolonda sector was cut off from the rest of Republic space,[1] and the worlds within it were forced to pay tributes to the Nihil.[9] Weeks afterward, in 229 BBY,[11] the Vurk Jedi Master Harli Cogra wrote a book titled Chronicles of the Jedi, which detailed the Jedi of the High Republic Era. In the book's afterword, Cogra lamented the formation of the Nihil's region and the ten sectors it affected.[2]
In 228 BBY,[12] the Nihil surrendered to the Republic following the Stormwall barrier's fall, which dissolved the Occlusion Zone as a territory. The worlds of the Occlusion Zone,[13] which included those in the Tolonda sector,[1] were welcomed back into the Republic if they wished. However, some opted to retain their independence, while others remained under the control of individual Nihil warlords.[13]
Locations
- "A year in the coral mines… four months alone on the Cordaxian Sea. I survived claw fish the size of a rancor… escaped the meat-slavers on the Copper Coast… slayed a squidshark with a thousand arms…"
- ―Frax, about his time stranded on Odona
Odona, a planet in the Tolonda sector
While the Tolonda sector astronomical object Exu Prime was trapped behind the Occlusion Zone,[9] between 230 BBY and 229 BBY,[14] the Ikkrukkian Jedi Master Porter Engle ambushed a Nihil patrol on Exu Prime and stole their shuttle.[9] Around 229 BBY,[15] Pontus—an asteroid city[9] situated in the sector[8]—was also under Nihil rule. During this time, Engle's sliced comm picked up a Nihil security report about the tithes that had been received from Pontus.[9]
The planet Odona[6]—also situated within the sector[5]—featured a cold climate[6] and a breathable, Type I atmosphere.[16] The world featured rocky terrain, as well as bodies of water, which included the Cordaxian Sea. Its fauna included colo claw fish, squidshark, and a type of six-legged creature native to Odona. Cordaxian ore, which was found on Odona, was one of the planet's exports. By the Imperial Era, Odona had long been used by pirates and smugglers to avoid the Galactic Empire due to its extreme climate and secret, web-like alcoves and caves. At some point during that time, the smuggler Han Solo left the criminal Frax for dead in Odona's Cordaxian Sea when the former's starship, the Millennium Falcon, was being chased by Imperial TIE fighters while carrying two tons of Cordaxian ore.[6]
Between 0 ABY and 3 ABY.[17] Solo and Princess Leia Organa went on a mission to Odona to search for a suitable location for a new rebel base for the Alliance to Restore the Republic. After the pair were separated from their allies, they were chased by one of Odona's six-legged creatures. Afterward, Solo was pursued by a revenge-bent Frax, but Organa managed to rescue him. With Frax having frozen to death, Solo and Organa were helped offworld by rebels that arrived to assist soon after.[6] At some point no earlier than 35 ABY,[18] the Galactic Society of Creature Enthusiasts' Director of Creature Cartography, Ardis San Tekka, mentioned Odona in an entry about colo claw fish within her journal.[19]
Behind the scenes
Current canon milestones
In the current canon, the Tolonda sector was first identified in the first issue of the 2023 Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures comic series.
In the current Star Wars canon, prior to being retconned into other media,[4] the ten sectors forming the Occlusion Zone were first mentioned, albeit unidentified, in a flashback in the second issue of the Star Wars: The High Republic: Eye of the Storm comic-book miniseries. The issue was written by Charles Soule and released by Marvel Comics[20] on March 2, 2022[21] as part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project's Phase I.[22] The Tolonda sector was later identified by name and specified to be one of the Occlusion Zone sectors via a map in the first issue of the 2023 comic series Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures. The issue was written by Daniel José Older, illustrated by Harvey Tolibao and Nick Brokenshire, and published by Dark Horse Comics as part of Phase III[1] on December 6, 2023.[22]
The Odona system, and therefore Odona itself, was placed in the Tolonda sector by "Star Systems of the Galaxy," an appendix[4] written by Jason Fry[23] that was published with the Star Wars Galaxy Map on StarWars.com[4] on June 24, 2025.[23] Odona first appeared in Star Wars Annual 3, the third annual issue of the 2015 comic-book series Star Wars. The issue was written by Jason Latour, illustrated by Michael Walsh, and published by Marvel Comics[6] on September 20, 2017,[24] retroactively marking the sector's first appearance.[4]
Discrepancies and origins
In the Legends continuity, the Tolonda sector was first introduced in Otherspace.
Star Wars Annual 3 established that the Cordaxian Sea was located on Odona.[6] Fry included a listing for the "Cordaxia system"—a star system situated in the Kibilini sector of the Outer Rim Territories—in "Star Systems of the Galaxy." Following the appendix's release, Fry worked with contributors from the free-to-edit, unofficial online Star Wars encyclopedia known as Wookieepedia to confirm the intended origins of several star systems created for the appendix. One such conflict uncovered during this process was the existence of the Cordaxia system.[25] The Cordaxia system listing was removed[4] in the October 13, 2025 update[26] of the appendix, after Fry had been made aware the Cordaxian Sea was located on Odona per Star Wars Annual 3,[25] and thus within the Tolonda sector.[6]
The Tolonda sector originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, where it was first introduced in the 1989 roleplaying adventure Otherspace, which was authored by Bill Slavicsek and published for use with West End Games' Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game.[27] In 2012, the sector was first visually depicted on a map designed by Modi and published in The Essential Atlas Extra: Outer Rim Sectors, a feature of[28] the StarWars.com Online Companion to the 2009 reference book The Essential Atlas.[29]

- ↑ Star Wars: The High Republic: Chronicles of the Jedi establishes that the in-universe book Chronicles of the Jedi was written weeks after the destruction of Starlight Beacon, which Star Wars: The High Republic Character Encyclopedia dates to 230 BBY. The issuing of the Guardian Protocols, dated by The High Republic Character Encyclopedia to 229 BBY, are depicted in The High Republic – Shadows of Starlight 1 as taking place one week after Starlight Beacon's destruction. With this, Chronicles of the Jedi must have been authored no earlier than 229 BBY. Chronicles of the Jedi further establishes that Pra-Tre Veter is still a Grand Master of the Jedi Order, meaning it was written before his death, which The High Republic Character Encyclopedia states took place in 229 BBY. Therefore, Chronicles of the Jedi must have been written in 229 BBY.
