- "An oclatar! Well, at least we know what might have happened to the missing archaeologist..."
- ―Obi-Wan Kenobi
An oclatar was a many-tentacled creature found on the abandoned starship which contained the Tomb of Sarasti Thel, founder of the Brotherhood of the Ninth Door.[1] By 32 BBY,[2] a nest of oclatars settled in the dark, depressurized interior of the ship despite the lack of atmosphere. When a team of archaeologists led by the Caphex Shanto restored the ship's atmosphere and boarded to explore and learn about the untouched vessel, Shanto wandered into the darkness and was slain by the creatures. The other archaeologists, who could not see into the darkness in which the attack occurred, came to believe the cryptic ship was haunted.[1]
When Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his Padawan, Obi-Wan Kenobi, arrived to investigate Shanto's disappearance, they too encountered an oclatar. The stealthy creature ambushed Kenobi, disarming him with a tentacle before lurching for the kill. Jinn was able to calm the oclatar with the Force and convince it to move along. The pair of Jedi eventually stumbled upon the nest of numerous oclatars, who perched from the ceiling. This time, the duo fled before the creatures could attack. Before long, however, many of the oclatars were incapacitated by Minakatso, a member of the Brotherhood of the Ninth Door pursuing Jinn.[1]
