"We will have control of the outpost soon, my lord."
"Even General Grievous could not take that command center. You are placing a lot of faith in an assassin, Count Dooku. It would be disappointing to learn fondness has clouded your judgement."
"She is gifted and if she fails… expendable."
―Darth Tyranus and Darth Sidious, on Asajj Ventress's attack against Outpost 716[1]

In 22 BBY during the Clone Wars, General Grievous of the Confederacy of Independent Systems attempted to capture Outpost 716 from the Galactic Republic. In the end, Grievous's attack failed. As the Sith Lords Darth Sidious and Darth Tyranus, the puppet masters of the war, still wanted the outpost to fall under Separatist control, Tyranus later dispatched his assassin Asajj Ventress on her own mission to Outpost 716, which ended with Ventress successfully destroying the command center.

In 22 BBY,[2] during the Clone Wars between the Confederacy of Independent Systems and the Galactic Republic, General Grievous[1]—a brilliant tactician, powerful combatant, and effective Jedi killer who served as the Supreme Commander of the Separatist Droid Army[3]—attempted to capture Outpost 716, a posting and command center used by the Republic. The well-defended command center was staffed by a group of clone troopers and operated under the command of Jedi General Mayanka Catrine, who was joined by her Padawan,[1] Jedi Commander[4] Agustin. However, the Sith Lords Darth Sidious and Darth Tyranus[1]—who controlled the war in their respective public personas of Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine of the Republic and Confederate Head of State Count Dooku[3]—wanted to see the outpost taken out of service via a Separatist attack. To that end, Grievous launched his effort against Outpost 716. However, despite all of Grievous's skills, the assault ultimately failed.[1]

Aftermath

"I defeated their plans. Now you shall grant me the title of Sith Lord!"
"No. You destroyed their outpost but you did not defeat them. You must prove yourself worthy."
"I have more than done so. Even Grievous couldn't—"
"I will tell you when you have done so."

Due to her own skills and reasoning that she was expendable, Tyranus later dispatched his personal assassin and apprentice, Asajj Ventress, in another attempt to capture Outpost 716. Although Sidious doubted her ability to take a base even Grievous could not capture, Dooku promised that the command center would soon fall in a holographic communication with Sidious aboard his Punworcca 116-class interstellar sloop. In fact, Ventress had already captured and destroyed the base thanks to a deceptive plan: she allowed herself to be captured and only struck when she was certain the Jedi had departed for another mission.[1]

Ventress returned to Tyranus immediately after his discussion with Sidious, demanding to be anointed a Sith Lord by citing that she had succeeded where even Grievous had failed. Instead, Tyranus ordered her to find a Jedi artifact to prove herself. During her investigation on the Moon of Staggec in the Outer Rim Territories, she learned that, once more, Grievous had been Tyranus's first choice in carrying out the mission, as the general had been previously tasked with locating the item.[1]

Behind the scenes

Grievous's attempt to capture Outpost 716 was mentioned in the fifth issue of the 2022 comic-book series Star Wars: Hyperspace Stories. The issue was written by Amanda Deibert and published by Dark Horse Comics[1] on May 24, 2023.[5]

Star Wars: Galactic Atlas: Updated Edition dates both to 22 BBY, therefore placing the events of Hyperspace Stories 5 in the same year. As Grievous's attack on Outpost 716 occurred during the Clone Wars but before the events of Hyperspace Stories 5, it must also occur in 22 BBY.
