"Combinin' a hearty blend of meat and veg with a scorchin' seasonin' mix, this concoction would make even the hardiest Mandalorian sweat themselves right outta that crazy armor of theirs."
―Strono Tuggs, The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook[1]

Tiingilar was a type of traditional Mandalorian stew made of meat, vegetables, and spices. A variant of the stew, Yobshrimp Tiingilar Stew, was crafted from yobshrimp, pasta, and sausage. In 34 ABY, the Artiodac chef Strono Tuggs published a recipe for the stew in his cookbook, The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook, and also served Yobshrimp Tiingilar Stew in his restaurantTuggs' Grub—on the Outer Rim planet Batuu.

Description

"This old Mandalorian gem is known in their native tongue as tiingilar"
―Strono Tuggs, The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook[1]

Tiingilar was a hearty and traditional Mandalorian stew made with a multicolored blend of meat, various vegetables, and a potent mix of spices that was consumable by Artiodacs. The mere scent of tiingilar was allegedly hot enough to burn an individual's nose hairs.[1] One variant of the stew, Yobshrimp Tiingilar Stew, could be made using yobshrimp, pasta, and sausage and was edible to humans.[2]

History

"Mandalorians were proud warriors with a real reputation for toughness. If somethin' didn't pose a challenge, it wasn't worth their time. Apparently, that point of view carried over into suppertime as well, as evidenced by this traditional stew that's so blazin' hot it'll burn the hair right outta your nostrils."

Although the Artiodac chef Strono Tuggs was not a Mandalorian, he came into possession of a recipe for authentic tiingilar. Tuggs believed the flavorful dish's potency reflected the Mandalorian people's reputation for strength and their love of a challenge; according to him, the concoction was spicy enough to make even the hardiest Mandalorian warriors sweat themselves out of their armor when they consumed it.[1]

In 34 ABY,[3] Tuggs published the recipe in his cookbook The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook, a collection of his favorites, with the title "spicy Mandalorian stew." Noting that he did not know how to translate the Mando'a name of the dish, he speculated that tiingilar roughly meant "eat at your own risk."[1] The same year,[4] Yobshrimp Tiingilar Stew was served in Tuggs' traveling restaurant, Tuggs' Grub, in Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo on the Outer Rim planet Batuu.[2]

Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge: The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook marked tiingilar's first introduction into the current canon.

In the current Star Wars canon, tiingilar was introduced as a recipe in the cookbook Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge: The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook,[1] which was released on November 5, 2019.[5] The cookbook was written by Marc Sumerak and Chelsea Monroe-Cassel with photography by Ted Thomas. The out-of-universe recipe uses the following ingredients: olive oil, yellow onion, minced garlic, fresh ginger, chopped chicken thighs, red apple, all-purpose flour, carrots, purple potato, garam masala, curry powder, tomato paste, sugar, soy sauce, chicken broth, and pearl couscous.[1] The stew made its first full appearance at the real-world Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo dining location in the Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge themed attraction[2] at Disneyland Park, which had originally opened to guests on May 31, 2019,[6] though the dish itself was not present on the original menu and added later.[7] The menu describes the dish as being a shrimp and sausage stew with orecchiette pasta.[8]

Tiingilar originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity as a casserole instead of a stew. It first appeared in Order 66: A Republic Commando Novel, which was written by Karen Traviss and published in 2008.[9]
