- "If you're searching for new adventures, 'this is the way'"
- ―Poster tagline
The Mandalorian and Grogu is an upcoming live-action Star Wars film, scheduled for release in theaters on May 22, 2026. The film, directed by Jon Favreau and produced by Favreau, Kathleen Kennedy, Dave Filoni, and Ian Bryce, takes place between the events of Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi and Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens. It continues and is a spinoff of the Disney+ series The Mandalorian.
In The Mandalorian and Grogu, the characters of Din Djarin (the titular "Mandalorian") and Grogu embark on a new adventure. The film stars Pedro Pascal, reprising his role as Din Djarin, and Sigourney Weaver. Ludwig Göransson, the original composer of The Mandalorian, returns to score the film. The film is the first in a new slate of Star Wars films and takes place in the same timeline as the ongoing Disney+ series The Mandalorian, a fourth season of which is still in development, and Star Wars: Ahsoka.
Publisher's summary
The Mandalorian, a lone bounty hunter, is tasked with capturing Grogu, a mysterious and adorable creature. Instead, he forms a strong bond with Grogu and strives to protect him from various threats, exploring his evolving purpose in a post-Empire galaxy.[4]
Development
- "Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau have a new vision, continuing on with a Mandalorian movie."
- ―Giancarlo Esposito
The Mandalorian and Grogu was announced, originally as The Mandalorian & Grogu, on January 9, 2024 on StarWars.com with a conceptual sketch by veteran illustrator Ryan Church, along with an announcement of a second season of the television series Star Wars: Ahsoka.[1] A fourth season of The Mandalorian is also reportedly still in development.[6] However, series actor Giancarlo Esposito suggested the film was part of "a new vision" for The Mandalorian.[5]
On May 7, 2019, Disney revealed their future movie release schedule, including a set of three untitled new Star Wars films, one of which had a scheduled release date of December 20, 2024.[7] The Star Wars Show also reported on the news on May 15.[8] On July 23, 2020, after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the film was delayed to December 19, 2025.[9] After the start of the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike, Disney shifted their theatrical film release slate, with the film being pushed to its current release date of May 22, 2026.[10] A film directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy occupied this release slot until The Mandalorian & Grogu was announced.[11]
Star Wars Insider 224 revealed the initial film logo was the same as the one for The Mandalorian Season Three.[12] In August 2024, during D23 2024, it was revealed that the film had entered production,[10] and a new logo was revealed, in addition to a teaser that was shown to the audience.[13] In August 2024, Sigourney Weaver revealed that she had joined the cast of The Mandalorian & Grogu.[14]
Alongside the release of the movie, Millennium Falcon: Smuggler's Run will be updated to include a new mission featuring Djarin, Grogu, Tatooine, Endor and Cloud City, which takes place off camera from the film.[15]
Release and reception
The Mandalorian and Grogu is scheduled for release on May 22, 2026.[10]
