"The new season is about introducing a larger story in the world. The stories become less isolated, yet each episode has its own flavor, and hopefully we're bringing a lot more scope to the show."
―Jon Favreau on Season Two[1]

Development

"I'll come up with ideas and sometimes Dave will say, 'You can't do this in Star Wars.' Then I'll cite examples from the movies, or Clone Wars, to try to use as a justification. I'm like a lawyer talking to a judge; I am to him as he was to George. I won't do anything without Dave's approval. And to his credit, he understands that Star Wars needs to be fun and ever-evolving."
―Jon Favreau[1]

In July 2019, showrunner Jon Favreau stated that he had started writing the show's second season, and pre-production was underway.[5] As he told Entertainment Weekly, his writing influenced by Game of Thrones format of telling multiple storylines at the same time.[1]

Favreau also returned as a director, alongside cast member Carl Weathers and season one directors Dave Filoni,[8] Rick Famuyiwa[7] and Bryce Dallas Howard,[9] as well as newcomers Peyton Reed[10] and Robert Rodriguez, new directors to the show.[11] With less startup costs than the first season, more of the budget was used for the show itself. George Lucas again visited the set, and gave Filoni tips on directing. The season finished filming a few days before the March 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. The post-production team had to adapt to the quarantine, with their biggest trouble being the recording of the musical score.[1]

Release

On September 8, 2020, Entertainment Weekly revealed the first promotional images from the season.[1] The first trailer was released on September 15,[17] followed by a special "sneak peak" during halftime of Monday Night Football on October 19.[18]

  13. Star Wars: Timelines dates the events of "Chapter 1: The Mandalorian" of The Mandalorian Season One to 9 ABY. In addition, SWInsider "A Certain Point of View" — Star Wars Insider 228 also dates "Part Seven: Dreams and Madness" to nine years after the events of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, which corresponds to 9 ABY per Timelines. "Part Seven: Dreams and Madness" takes place after the conflict on Mandalore, which is the main event depicted in "Chapter 23: The Spies" and "Chapter 24: The Return," the final two episodes of The Mandalorian Season Three. Therefore, Seasons One through Three of Star Wars: The Mandalorian must all be set in 9 ABY as well.
