A Star Wars trilogy is being written by Simon Kinberg. It will be the next iteration of the main Star Wars films after Star Wars: Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker, launching a new saga that takes the franchise into the future.

Simon, if you remember, he did some work with us years ago with the animated show, which was a really wonderful collaborative experience. And he then got very, very busy with X-Men and then recently became available again, and he segued into this space beautifully. We're really excited about where that’s headed."

Simon Kinberg will create the next iteration of the Star Wars franchise.
On November 7, 2024, Deadline reported that Simon Kinberg will develop and write a new Star Wars film trilogy, with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy as a producer.[3] The The Hollywood Reporter then reported that the films were not a continuation of the Skywalker Saga,[4] while Deadline reported that it would comprise of Episodes X to XII, and would be a new narrative separate from upcoming projects including the upcoming film focusing on Rey's New Jedi Order directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, the upcoming film by James Mangold set in the Dawn of the Jedi era, the upcoming film by Taika Waititi, and the upcoming Lando film by Donald Glover.[3]
On February 27, 2025, Kennedy confirmed to Deadline that Lucasfilm was indeed producing a new Star Wars trilogy that would start a new saga and the next iteration for the franchise, thus taking it into the future. Development of the trilogy was moving forward expeditiously, and Kinberg had begun going to the script phase of the project and likely deliver a script by June.[1] In an interview with Nerdtropolis on August 15, Kinberg cited Star Wars: Andor as a source of inspiration.[5] On August 19, Kinberg further spoke to ScreenRant, stating that he'd find a balance between "big, epic science fiction storytelling with really intimate, dramatic character work." Kinberg further said that Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back was one such film that struck that balance, as did Andor.[6]
