In February of 2020, Disney CEO Bob Iger hinted in an earnings call that spinoff series featuring characters from Star Wars: The Mandalorian were in development.[5] Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy announced that Rangers of the New Republic and Star Wars: Ahsoka were among those series during a Disney Investor Day presentation on December 10 of that year. She stated that they and "future stories" would be take place in The Mandalorian's timeline[4]—which is set around 9 ABY[3]—and "culminate in a climactic story event."[4]
On February 10, 2021, The Hollywood Reporter reported that actress Gina Carano[6]—who had played Marshal of the New Republic Cara Dune in The Mandalorian[7]—was originally slated to be revealed as the star of a spinoff series during the 2020 Disney Investor Day presentation. On the same day, Lucasfilm denounced "abhorrent" social media posts by Carano in a public statement and confirmed that Carano was not currently employed by the company, nor would she be employed in any future projects.[6] On May 20, in an interview with Dave Filoni, Variety reported that the series was no longer in active development.[8] In an interview with Kathleen Kennedy in the January 2022 issue of Empire, it was confirmed that Rangers had indeed been intended to star Carano as Cara Dune and that the series was canceled. Kennedy added that scripts were never written for the series, and concepts and ideas from it would be incorporated into future episodes of The Mandalorian.[2]
On February 6, 2024, Carano filed a lawsuit for discrimination and wrongful termination against Disney and Lucasfilm, seeking to be recast in Star Wars and receive compensation for Rangers of the New Republic's cancelation.[9] On August 7, 2025, Disney, Lucasfilm, and Carano announced that they had reached a settlement over the lawsuit.[10]

"A Certain Point of View" — Star Wars Insider 228 also dates "Part Seven: Dreams and Madness" to nine years after the events of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, which corresponds to 9 ABY per Timelines. "Part Seven: Dreams and Madness" takes place after the conflict on Mandalore, which is the main event depicted in "Chapter 23: The Spies" and "Chapter 24: The Return," the final two episodes of The Mandalorian Season Three. Therefore, Seasons One through Three of Star Wars: The Mandalorian must all be set in 9 ABY as well. As
Future Lucasfilm Projects Revealed on StarWars.com (backup link) states that Rangers of the New Republic is set in the same time period as The Mandalorian, it must therefore also have been planned to be set around 9 ABY.
