"The fair will bring much investment to Valo and the surrounding systems. In fact, it already is. Transport, passage, tourism…"
Samera Ra-oon[1]

Valo was a forested planet in the Valo system of the Outer Rim Territories' Rseik sector. It was the homeworld of the Alcedian avian sentient species.

Description

Valo was a terrestrial planet situated on the edge of the Rseik sector in the Outer Rim Territories. Located in the Valo system, the planet orbited a single sun that shone brightly in its sky.[1] Valo was positioned at the coordinates N-19 on the Standard Galactic Grid, and was on a hyperspace route that connected it to[2] the planet Kirdo III.[6]

Valo possessed a type I atmosphere[4] breathable to various species, including humans. Jedi Master Elzar Mann perceived its air to be extremely pure. Valon summers were generally warm.

In summer, its sky was a blue comparable to an Ankarres sapphire, featuring wispy clouds.

History

In 231 BBY,[7] Valo was chosen as the site for the Valo Republic Fair, the first such fair in a generation. Supreme Chancellor Lina Soh of the Republic, who planned the fair as one of her Great Works, believed it would show strength in the face of the threat posed by the Nihil marauders following the Great Hyperspace Disaster and its subsequent Emergences. The Valon Samera Ra-oon was made the coordinator of the fair, and the Republic worked closely with the Jedi during the time leading up to the fair. The Jedi Council assigned Jedi Master Elzar Mann as the marshal of Valo's Jedi outpost, a posting that he accepted after seeking answers from the Force regarding destructive visions he had witnessed and realizing it was directing him to Valo.

The state-of-the-art research vessel Innovator, designed by the engineer Vam Targes and constructed by the Cyclorrians of the Cyclor Shipyards, was set to be showcased at the fair on Valo.

Soh herself traveled to Valo aboard her ship, the Coruscant Dawn, alongside Vice Chancellor Larep Reza, her aide, Norel Quo, her son, Kitrep, and a Jedi escort consisting of Masters Stellan Gios and Nib Assek and the Padawan Burryaga Agaburry. Also accompanying Soh was the reporter Rhil Dairo, whose network, GoNet, was to provide full coverage of the event.

After the Nihil attacked the Innovator at the Cyclor Shipyards, Ra-oon had security measures on Valo increased. The attack prompted the Jedi to assign more of their number to Valo, as well as concerning the Togruta ambassador Tiss, who requested a security sweep of Regasa Elarec Yovet's suite at the Hotel Republica.

On the day before the Fair's opening ceremony, Soh and her party landed on Valo aboard a shuttle, where they were greeted by a committee that included Ra-oon, Mann, Mayor Nas Lariin of Lonisa City, and Captain Idrax Snat of the Valo Security Force. A Jedi craft from the Starlight Beacon space station also brought a number of artifacts in the hands of Archivist OrbaLin, who had been sent in the place of Starlight's marshal, Avar Kriss. Mann waited behind, having expected Kriss, but was instead tasked with assisting OrbaLin as Soh and her party traveled to the Republic embassy by aircar to be briefed prior to the opening.

Inhabitants

Valo's population, known as Valons, included humans.

Valo was also home to a population of the diminutive Bonbrak species

Locations

Valo's capital, Lonisa City, was situated between an inland lake and mountains lined with forests.

Behind the scenes

"Valo is a very off-to-the-side world. It's pretty, and has a very happening culture, but it's never been the center of attention of the whole galaxy the way it is when the Republic Fair happens."
―Daniel José Older[8]

Valo was created by Cavan Scott for the Star Wars: The High Republic publishing initiative,[9] though it was first mentioned in the 2020 short story "Fake It Till You Make It," written by Scott for From a Certain Point of View: The Empire Strikes Back.[10] Valo debuted simultaneously in Scott's novel The High Republic: The Rising Storm[1] as well as The High Republic: Race to Crashpoint Tower, written by Daniel José Older and featuring illustrations by Petur Antonsson.[3]

Scott originally created Valo as the setting of his Marvel Comics series, Star Wars: The High Republic, though only briefly; the planet was subsequently shifted to The Rising Storm instead. The name "Valo" was derived from Avalon, a location featured in Arthurian legend.[9] It was originally meant to be named Carnagra.[11]
