The Tarnab were a sentient species that were native to Tarn that had a triangular skull and a cluster of horns amid rough hair. During the era of the High Republic, Grand Master Pra-Tre Veter represented the species in the Jedi Order. During the waning decades of the Galactic Republic, they were represented by Senator Mot-Not Rab in the Galactic Senate.

Biology and appearance

Tarnab were a sentient upright bipedal species who walked with two legs and had two arms.^[5] They had a two rows of three to six horns extruding from the sides of their heads. The face is long and narrow, largely made up of an extended snout-like structure, with a mouth sitting at the bottom. The nostrils appears as vertical slits set into the snout. They are partially obscured by overlapping ridges of tissue. The eyes of the species are set deep within the skull, partially obscured by a heavy brow ridge. The skin on a Tarnab's face resembles a thick leather hide rather than smooth flesh as found on humans.^[7] A Tarnab's arm ended with a three fingered hand with fingernails. ^[5]

History

The Tarnab hailed from Tarn, an astronomical object^[5] which was located in the Tarn system of the Doldur sector in the Mid Rim Territories.^[8]

The Tarnab had a colony^[9] on the desert planet Sriluur^[10] An entry on the Tarnab, including an illustration of a Tarnab in red robes, was included in an artist's journal, which was restored by the Graf Archive restoration effort, expanded, and displayed at the Graf Archive^[5] at some point no earlier than 34 ABY.^[11]

Society and culture

During the final decades of the Galactic Republic Tarn was represented by the Tarnab Senator Mot-Not Rab.^[5] The species was described as "mysterious" by an artist's journal compiled by the Graf Archive.^[5]

According to a Holocron recorded by the Jedi explorer Joria Skarl and which was stored in the Jedi Archives and described as one of the oldest in the collection, she visited a monastery of the Phoolian Monks order on the Bartool during which she learned of the story of Darth Ravi the Bold. In the story a Tarnab follower of Ravi was searching for the Echo Stone, an artefact that had been sealed within a complex puzzle which was created by the Ancients on the Dead Moon of Gothol. The Tarnab would eventually die on the moon.^[12]

By 382 BBY,^[13] the Tarnab Pra-Tre Veter had joined the Jedi High Council.^[14] Also in the High Republic era the criminal Arathab Fal who was a member of the Nihil served as the Eye of the Nihil Marchion Ro's She'ar.^[15] While Fal was a member of the She'ar, he was killed during an unsuccessful assassination attempt on Ro.^[16]

Around 33 BBY to 32 BBY^[17] a Tarnab buyer was kicked in the face by a disguised Darth Maul while Maul and Zek Peiro battled in a Skirmish in the Coruscant underworld.^[18] Later a Tarnab air taxi driver transported a young Anakin Skywalker, Qui-Gon Jinn, Jar Jar Binks and Obi-Wan Kenobi from a landing platform in Coruscant to the Jedi Temple.^[1] During the Plot to assassinate Senator Amidala^[19] In 22 BBY^[20] a Tarnab was present walking on the sidewalk in the Uscru District outside the Outlander Club when Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi and Padawan Anakin Skywalker chased the bounty hunter Zam Wessell into the bar.^[19] During the Clone Wars^[21] Senator Mot-Not Rab who was from Tarn represented the Tarnab in the Galactic Senate and was a member of the species.^[5]

During the final decades of the alactic Republic's reign a male Tarnab sandscribe who hailed from a colony^[9] on the desert planet^[10] Sriluur. The Tarnab married the male Weequay Gojuni Motts-Danel. The two husbands were known for their holography and abstract art and gained prominence within the corporate art scene.^[9]

Behind the scenes

The Tarnab first appeared in the 1999 film Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, directed by George Lucas.^[1] Though not named in the film they were first identified in the 2016 book Star Wars Propaganda: A History of Persuasive Art in the Galaxy written by Pablo Hidalgo.^[9]
