- "Ten sectors were sealed away behind a barrier that prevents hyperspace jumps into the Exclusion Zone. Communications in and out of this region have failed, and the Nihil have begun to expand their presence in the Outer Rim. Wherever they rule, horrific brutality follows."
- ―Harli Cogra about the Occlusion Zone sectors, in Chronicles of the Jedi
The Kathol sector was a sector in the Outer Rim Territories and the Western Reaches that bordered the Minos Cluster. It contained the Aaris, Binaros, Bresan, Brolsam, Charis, Corjain, Danoor, Dayark, Demonsgate, Dolstan, Ehjenla, Exocron, Galtea, Galtea Binary, Gandle Ott, Ivatch, Jangelle, Kal'Shebbol, Kathol, Kolatill, Mairne, Oon Tien, Peirs, Pembric, Pitann, Q'Maere, Qu'mock, Sapella, Sebiris, Septra, Shatuun, Shintel, Swedlan, Timbra Ott, Torize, Uukaablis, and Yvara systems. The sector was also home to the shadowport Tanquilla Beach, the regions Kathol Rift and Kathol Outback, and the Marcol Void.
During the High Republic Era, the sector fell within the Galactic Republic's Galactic Frontier exploration region. The Kathol sector became part of the Occlusion Zone following its formation in 230 BBY as one of ten sectors sealed behind a barrier preventing hyperspace travel. In 228 BBY, the Stormwall's fall dissolved the Occlusion Zone. By 10 BBY, the former pirate queen Maz Kanata denoted a shadowport in the Kathol sector—Tanquilla Beach—on a map in a book that would become known as the Smuggler's Guide. At some point by 0 BBY, the smuggler Han Solo traveled to the Kathol sector planet Kal'Shebbol. Kal'Shebbol was also the homeworld of the human Cal Alder, a lieutenant in the Alliance to Restore the Republic.
Description
The Kathol sector was a space sector located in the Outer Rim Territories[1] and the Western Reaches regions[3] that bordered the Minos Cluster.[1] It contained the Aaris, Binaros, Bresan, Brolsam, Charis, Corjain, Danoor, Dayark, Demonsgate, Dolstan, Ehjenla, Exocron, Galtea, Galtea Binary, Gandle Ott, Ivatch, Jangelle, Kal'Shebbol, Kathol, Kolatill, Mairne, Oon Tien, Peirs, Pembric, Pitann, Q'Maere, Qu'mock, Sapella, Sebiris, Septra, Shatuun, Shintel, Swedlan, Timbra Ott, Torize, Uukaablis, and Yvara systems. The sector was also home to the Kathol Rift[4] and Kathol Outback regions,[6] the shadowport[7] Tanquilla Beach, and the Marcol Void.[4] The Galtea system contained[8] the terrestrial celestial body Galtea.[9] The Rimma Trade Route was connected to Kal'Shebbol,[5] a planet[10] in the sector's Kal'Shebbol system.[11] The star systems of the Kathol sector were situated in grid square M-21 of the Standard Galactic Grid.[4]
History
During the High Republic Era, the Galactic Republic designated a section of the Outer Rim—which included the Kathol sector—as the Galactic Frontier, locations considered removed far enough from the galaxy's center to send explorers there.[2] In 230 BBY, the Nihil marauder organization formed the Occlusion Zone—an area of space in the Outer Rim's Frontier that was situated behind the Stormwall barrier preventing hyperspace travel.[12] As one of the ten sectors forming the boundary of the Occlusion Zone, the Kathol sector was cut off from the rest of Republic space[1] and the worlds within it were forced to pay tributes to the Nihil.[9]
Harli Cogra documented the formation of the Occlusion Zone, of which the Kathol sector was a part, in Chronicles of the Jedi.
In 229 BBY,[13] Jedi Master Elzar Mann mentioned the beings trapped behind the Stormwall to Republic Supreme Chancellor Lina Soh to motivate her to not give up in the conflict against the Nihil, naming Galtea's population as one of several such examples.[9] Weeks afterward, in the same year,[14] the Vurk Jedi Master Harli Cogra wrote a book titled Chronicles of the Jedi, which detailed the Jedi of the High Republic Era. In the book's afterword, Cogra lamented the formation of the Nihil's region and the ten sectors it affected.[2] In 228 BBY,[15] the Nihil surrendered to the Republic following the Stormwall barrier's fall, which dissolved the Occlusion Zone as a territory. The worlds of the Occlusion Zone,[16] which included those in the Kathol sector,[1] were welcomed back into the Republic if they wished. However, some opted to retain their independence, while others remained under the control of individual Nihil warlords.[16]
Around 19 BBY,[17] a woman gave the former Separatist operative Soujen Vak-Nhalis chain codes, an identichip, credits, and accessories, as part of a disguise to help him escape the planet Li'eta while posing as a pilgrim headed to the Kathol Rift. However, he killed her after surmising the escape bundle she had prepared him, including his fake identity as a Kathol Rift pilgrim, was faulty.[18] According to Everi Chalis, the Imperial governor of the planet Haidoral Prime, a revolt of enslaved individuals on[19] the planet[10] Kashyyyk would cause serious problems for the Kathol Rift's outposts. After defecting to the Rebel Alliance's 61st Mobile Infantry[19] in 3 ABY,[20] she shared her theory involving the Kathol Rift with Captain Micha Evon and some of his colleagues aboard the company's CR90 corvette, the Thunderstrike.[19]
Locations
By 10 BBY,[21] the former pirate queen Maz Kanata denoted Tanquilla Beach as a shadowport and outlaw garage on a map she included in a book that would become known as the Smuggler's Guide.[7] At some point by 0 BBY,[22] the smuggler Han Solo traveled to[23] the Kathol sector[11] planet[10] Kal'Shebbol.[23] Kal'Shebbol was the homeworld of the human Cal Alder, who,[10] by 3 ABY,[24] served as a lieutenant in the Alliance to Restore the Republic's High Command during the Galactic Civil War between the Rebel Alliance and the Galactic Empire.[10]
Behind the scenes
In the current canon, the Kathol sector was first identified in the first issue of the 2023 Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures comic series.
In the current Star Wars canon, the ten sectors forming the Occlusion Zone were first mentioned, albeit unidentified, in a flashback in the second issue of the Star Wars: The High Republic: Eye of the Storm comic-book miniseries. The issue was written by Charles Soule and released by Marvel Comics[25] on March 2, 2022[26] as part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project's Phase I.[27] The Kathol sector was later identified by name and specified to be one of the Occlusion Zone sectors via a map in the first issue of the 2023 comic series Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures. The issue was written by Daniel José Older, illustrated by Harvey Tolibao and Nick Brokenshire, and published by Dark Horse Comics as part of The High Republic's Phase III[1] on December 6, 2023.[27]
The Kathol sector's star systems were included in "Star Systems of the Galaxy," an appendix published with the Star Wars Galaxy Map on StarWars.com[4] on June 24, 2025. Both works were authored by Jason Fry.[28] In the first iteration, the Kathol Rift and the Kathol Outback were presented as subsectors of the Kathol sector. The former included the Demonsgate, Kathol, Q'Maere, and Yvara systems, while the latter included the Binaros, Bresan, Danoor, Dayark, Dolstan, Ehjenla, Exocron, Galtea Binary, Jangelle, Pitann, Qu'mock, Sapella, Shatuun, Swedlan, Timbra Ott, and Uukaablis systems, as well as the Marcol Void.[29] Following the appendix's release, Fry worked with contributors from the free-to-edit, unofficial online Star Wars encyclopedia known as Wookieepedia to correct issues in the appendix for its next iteration. As part of that process, Fry indicated he intended to remove references to regions such as the Kathol Outback and Kathol Rift as subsectors, as they were instead only geographic regions instead of subsectors.[30] Indeed, the October 13, 2025 update to the appendix[31] moved all of the Kathol Rift and Kathol Outback's star systems' listings to the be in Kathol sector without subsector indicators.[4]
The Kathol sector originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, where it was first introduced in Galaxy Guide 2: Yavin and Bespin, Second Edition. The sourcebook was written by Jonatha Ariadne Caspian for West End Games' Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game[32] and published in 1995, at some point by July of that year.[33] The sector made its first full appearance concurrently in Timothy Zahn's short story "The Saga Begins" and several roleplaying adventures, all of which were included in The DarkStryder Campaign, a boxed set of Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game material released by West End Games[34] on July 17, 1995.[35]

- ↑ Elzar Mann and Lina Soh's conversation from The High Republic: The Eye of Darkness mentioning Galtea takes place shortly before the one-year anniversary of the destruction of Starlight Beacon, which equates to 229 BBY per Star Wars: The High Republic Character Encyclopedia.
- ↑ Star Wars: The High Republic: Chronicles of the Jedi establishes that the in-universe book Chronicles of the Jedi was written weeks after the destruction of Starlight Beacon, which Star Wars: The High Republic Character Encyclopedia dates to 230 BBY. The issuing of the Guardian Protocols, dated by The High Republic Character Encyclopedia to 229 BBY, are depicted in The High Republic – Shadows of Starlight 1 as taking place one week after Starlight Beacon's destruction. With this, Chronicles of the Jedi must have been authored no earlier than 229 BBY. Chronicles of the Jedi further establishes that Pra-Tre Veter is still a Grand Master of the Jedi Order, meaning it was written before his death, which The High Republic Character Encyclopedia states took place in 229 BBY. Therefore, Chronicles of the Jedi must have been written in 229 BBY.

Rebecca Roanhorse (@rebeccaroanhorse) on Instagram (post): "Title and updated release date of my upcoming STAR WARS novel announced at SDCC. THE EDGE OF THE ABYSS takes place a year before Andor S1." (backup link) states that Edge of the Abyss takes place a year before the events of Andor Season 1, which are set in 5 BBY per the reasoning here. Therefore, the events of Edge of the Abyss must be set in 6 BBY, and the events of The Mask of Fear in 19 BBY.
