"I know why a slave revolt on Kashyyyk spells doom for outposts along the Kathol Rift, and why General Veers can't afford another thorilide shortage along the Rimma."
―Everi Chalis, to Micha Evon — 20?cb=20250116042720 ▶️ (file info)[3]

The Kathol Rift was a region of space in the Kathol sector,[1] within the Western Reaches portion[2] of the Outer Rim Territories. It lay in the grid square M-21 on the Standard Galactic Grid.[1] Multiple outposts were located in the Kathol Rift during the time of the Galactic Empire.[3] Around 19 BBY,[4] a woman gave the Separatist operative Soujen Vak-Nhalis chain codes, an identichip, credits, and accessories, as part of a disguise to help him escape the planet Li'eta while posing as a pilgrim headed to the Kathol Rift.[5]

According to Everi Chalis, the Imperial governor of the planet Haidoral Prime, a revolt of enslaved individuals on[3] the planet[6] Kashyyyk would cause serious problems for the outposts. After defecting to the Rebel Alliance's 61st Mobile Infantry[3] in 3 ABY,[7] she shared her theory involving the Kathol Rift with Captain Micha Evon and some of his colleagues aboard the company's CR90 corvette, the Thunderstrike.[3]

The Kathol Rift in Star Wars Legends continuity

The Kathol Rift was first mentioned in the new Star Wars canon in the 2015 novel Battlefront: Twilight Company, written by Alexander Freed.[3] It was originally introduced in the Star Wars Legends continuity via The DarkStryder Campaign, a series of sourcebooks for use with West End Games' Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game. The Kathol Rift was first mentioned in the debut boxed set The DarkStryder Campaign[8] on July 17, 1995.[9] The region's first proper appearance was in the roleplaying game adventures "Little Empires," "Wildfire," "The Masters of Exocron," and "Galaxy's Edge," which were included in the series' second supplement The Kathol Outback,[10] released on January 15, 1996.[11]

The Kathol Rift was included in "Star Systems of the Galaxy," an appendix published with the Star Wars Galaxy Map on StarWars.com[1] on June 24, 2025. Both works were authored by Jason Fry.[12] In the first iteration, it Kathol Rift was listed among the star systems while also being treated as a subsector of the Kathol sector containing the Demonsgate, Kathol, Q'Maere, and Yvara systems.[13] After this iteration's release, Fry worked with contributors from Wookieepedia, an unofficial, free-to-edit, online Star Wars encyclopedia, to correct issues in the appendix for its next version. In the process of this collaboration, Fry indicated his intent to remove references to the Kathol Rift being a subsectors, with the idea being that it was only a geographic region instead of a subsector.[14] The October 13, 2025 update to the appendix[15] indeed removed the Kathol Rift as a subsector for any star system listings.[1]
