For other uses, see Giju.

"Giju sits at one end of a hyperspace lane known as Herglic Alley, which links the Rimma Trade Route to the Corellian Run. For those who don't get off their homeworld much, that means a lot of weary travelers find their way to Giju as they navigate their way across the galaxy."
―Strono Tuggs, The Ultimate Cookbook[6]

Giju was a planet located in Herglic Space within the Colonies. Due to its placement on the Rimma Trade Route and the Herglic Alley hyperspace routes, it received many visitors and had tapcafes and cantinas to serve them. In 0 ABY, a group of underground Alliance to Restore the Republic leaders were evacuated from Giju by three members of the Alliance's Red Squadron, who fought the Galactic Empire's forces over the world. The Artiodac chef Strono Tuggs also visited Giju and tried several variants of the Giju Glug beverage there while on a culinary tour of the galaxy at some point between 34 ABY and 35 ABY.

Description

A yellow line labeled as the Herglic Alley connects dots marked Giju and Byblos on a map of the galaxy. Giju also falls on a line representing the Rimma Trade Route and Byblos falls on a line representing the Corellian Run.

The Herglic Alley connected the Rimma Trade Route and the Corellian Run, resulting in many visitors to Giju.

Giju was a planet[7] that appeared blue in color from orbit.[8] It was located in the Giju system within Herglic Space in the Colonies[1] and the Interior[2] in grid square L-13 of the Standard Galactic Grid.[1] The Giju Run hyperspace route had one of its termini at Giju and connected the world to[3] the Bardotta system,[5] while the Herglic Alley route ran from Giju to the Byblos system,[4] which also sat on the Corellian Run. Giju also fell on the Rimma Trade Route,[5] a super-hyperroute[9] that connected it to Dentaal system and the Ghorman system.[5]

History

Getting off of Giju

"It all began above the planet Giju, with a mission for Red Squadron…"

Rebel leaders were evacuated from Giju by the X-wings of Red Squadron.

Rebel leaders were evacuated from Giju by the X-wings of Red Squadron.

By 10 BBY,[10] the pirate queen Maz Kanata had marked Giju as a location of interest on a map in the book known as the Smuggler's Guide.[4] In 0 ABY,[11] a group of underground Alliance to Restore the Republic leaders were evacuated from Giju on board a transport ahead of agents of the Galactic Empire. The transport was escorted by a trio of rebel X-wing starfighters from Red Squadron but encountered a patrol of TIE fighters amidst the space lanes above the planet, leading to a firefight between the two groups of starfighters. Many of the other starships on the lanes above Giju, including two freight tenders and a line of bulk freighters, then moved away from the fight as quickly as possible while more Imperial forces arrived.[7]

Although the sheer amount of traffic above Giju meant there were numerous places for enemy vessels to hide in, the rebels instead managed to destroy several TIEs before the transport safely made a jump to hyperspace. The three X-wings then followed scatter protocol and each of them individually jumped to hyperspace, with the rebel pilot Luke Skywalker following a randomly chosen zigzag pattern of jumps to reach the planet Devaron, which was not far from Giju.[7]

Maps, tales, and recipes

Two glasses of Giju Glug, a transparent drink with a layer of sliced orange fruit at its bottom, brown spheres above that, and a large amount of ice at its surface.

Giju Glug was commonly served on Giju.

Shortly before the Alliance established a base on the planet Hoth, that world was missing from a star chart titled Giju plot 773/B.[12] At some point between 33 ABY and 34 ABY,[13] the protocol droid C-3PO told a story that relayed Red Squadron's mission to Giju to the Resistance pilot Jessika Pava.[7]

During a culinary tour of the galaxy that he took[6] between 34 ABY and 35 ABY,[14] the Artiodac chef Strono Tuggs stopped at Giju and visited several tapcafes and cantinas, discovering several variations of a commonly available drink that the locals called Giju Glug. He mentioned Giju when including a recipe for his favorite variation, which included Blutopia pearls, in his third cookbook, The Ultimate Cookbook, which was published[6] in 35 ABY.[14]

Locations

"Lucky for them—and for me—there are a wide assortment of cantinas and tapcafes eager to lighten their loads by the weight of a few credits. Each of these establishments offers its own unique list of libations, but one common entry seems to be this fizzy drink that the locals call Giju Glug."
―Strono Tuggs, The Ultimate Cookbook[6]

Due to the Herglic Alley's connection between the Rimma Trade Route and the Corellian Run, numerous travelers ended up at Giju during journeys across the galaxy. To cater to these visitors, the world had a wide array of cantinas and tapcafes that each offered unique assortments of beverages.[6]

Behind the scenes

In the current Star Wars canon, Giju first appeared in the 2015 novel The Weapon of a Jedi: A Luke Skywalker Adventure, which was written by Jason Fry.[7] It was then depicted for the first time in the first part of the comic adaptation of the novel, which was written by Alec Worley, illustrated by Ruairí Coleman, and published in Star Wars Magazine 19[15] on March 29, 2017.[16]

The Kel Dor Jedi Sha Koon stands with her lightsaber raised to deflect incoming blaster fire in the marshy green landscape of Giju. Around the Jedi, clone troopers in Phase I armor rush forward, some falling to the incoming blaster shots.

In the Star Wars Legends continuity, Giju first appeared in Purge – Seconds to Die.

Giju originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, where it was first mentioned in the Dark Force Rising Sourcebook, a 1993 supplement for Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game written by Bill Slavicsek and published by West End Games.[17] The planet was then depicted for the first time in the 2005 reference book The New Essential Chronology, which was written by Daniel Wallace.[18] Giju's first full Legends appearance then occured during a flashback in Purge – Seconds to Die, a comic book written by John Ostrander, illustrated by Jim Hall, and published by Dark Horse Comics[19] on November 11, 2009.[20]

Sorry to bother, but would make our lives much easier to have it confirmed!)" (screenshot).

  14. 14.0 14.1 Star Wars: The Ultimate Cookbook establishes that the publishing of the in-universe The Ultimate Cookbook and the culinary tour that preceded it occurred following the publishing of The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook and prior to the destruction of Kijimi. It also establishes that The Ultimate Cookbook was published following the Festival of the Ancestors that occurred during that time period. Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge: The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook further establishes that The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook was published concurrently with the First Order's search for the Resistance base on Batuu, which Star Wars: Timelines dates to 34 ABY. In addition, Timelines dates the Festival of the Ancestors and the destruction of Kijimi to 35 ABY, meaning the tour must have taken place between 34 ABY and 35 ABY and The Ultimate Cookbook must have been published in 35 ABY.
