"The package is clear and calculating the jump into hyperspace. Activate your scatter protocols and we'll meet at the rendezvous point at 2300 hours."
"Copy that, boss. Activating protocol now. See you on the other side, Luke."
―Arhul Narra and Wedge Antilles[1]

Scatter protocol was an Alliance to Restore the Republic flight procedure that required its starfighter pilots to depart individually by randomly chosen zigzag paths through hyperspace in order to evade tracking by the Galactic Empire and minimize losses if someone was caught. Following a mission to the planet Giju in 0 ABY, the Red Squadron pilots Arhul Narra, Wedge Antilles, and Luke Skywalker used the protocol when departing from above the world.

Description

Scatter protocol was a flight procedure used by the Starfighter Corps of the Alliance to Restore the Republic that required its pilots to individually follow a randomly chosen zigzag path through hyperspace with several jumps when departing from a mission. The tactic was designed to foil any Imperial forces that might be tracking them and ensure that if Imperials did succeed in tracking a pilot, then it would only result in the loss of one starfighter rather than an entire squadron or fleet. The procedure was followed due to the Empire's tendency to flood sectors with warships in response to any threat.[1]

History

"I'm sure there will be patrols searching for us—the Empire's flooding sectors with warships in response to any threat. That's why we follow scatter protocol."
―Luke Skywalker, to R2-D2[1]

Red Squadron pilots Arhul Narra, Wedge Antilles, and Luke Skywalker followed scatter protocol when departing from Giju in 0 ABY.

In 0 ABY,[2] Red Leader Arhul Narra ordered Red Squadron pilots Luke Skywalker and Wedge Antilles to activate the protocol after the trio successfully evacuated a group of underground rebel leaders on a transport from the planet Giju and bested Imperial TIE fighters above the world. Narra departed, then Antilles, and finally Skywalker, who had his astromech droid R2-D2 program the jump sequence for the planet Devaron into his navigation computer before jumping to hyperspace.[1]

Behind the scenes

"Activate your scatter protocols. Let's make it nice and hard for any patrols thinking of tracking us. We'll meet at the rendezvous point at 2300 hours."
―Arhul Narra's altered dialogue in the comic adaptation[1]

Scatter protocol first appeared in the 2015 novel The Weapon of a Jedi: A Luke Skywalker Adventure, which was written by Jason Fry.[1] The protocol was first depicted in the first part of the comic adaptation of the novel, which was written by Alec Worley, illustrated by Ruairí Coleman, and published in Star Wars Magazin 19[3] on March 29, 2017.[4] The comic adaptation features altered dialogue regarding the scatter protocol from Arhul Narra.[3]
