Plot summary
At the base of the Acolytes of the Beyond on the planet Devaron, Reyna Oskure speaks with the cleric Yupe Tashu about how the Jedi Luke Skywalker will be heading to Pillio, where the late Emperor Palpatine had an observatory. Tashu expects he will be heading there since the Force will be drawing him to an ancient Jedi artifact. He instructs Oskure to continue her efforts on managing the rogue Moff Ubrik Adelhard. He then plans to send the acolyte Yuan Howzell to deal with Skywalker on Pillio.
Aboard the Super Star Destroyer Ravager, one of Palpatine's Sentinel droids orders surviving Imperial loyalists to commence Operation: Cinder. Later, a shadowy figure speaks with the newly promoted Grand Admiral Rae Sloane via hologram on the commencement of the operation. Given that things are going smoothly, the man asks Sloane why she is contacting him. It is about Adelhard and his actions in the Anoat sector, which would have been commendable during before the Emperor's death. Now, however, his Iron Blockade serves as a hindrance for which the mysterious figure has coordinated with Yupe Tashu to handle.
On the planet Darlyn Boda, located within Adelhard's Anoat sector, he and his troops capture a group of New Republic pilots. One of these pilots, Eiro, resists Adelhard, reminding him that the Empire has fallen and that the New Republic will be closing in. Adelhard angrily holds a blaster pistol to Eiro's chest, asking him what power defeated his squadron of "Rebels" in combat, holds his life in his hands. He fires, killing Eiro, and reminds the surviving pilots that the Empire lives as long as he does. At Lieutenant Kith Alaytia's request, he allows the other pilots to live so she can question them.
Leia Organa and Mon Mothma gather on Chandrila, provisional capital of the nascent Republic, to discuss intelligence about the Anoat sector with Agent Calder Behrens. Behrens believes the actions there to be critical, despite intelligence from the so-called "Operator" contradicting the reports of Rebel pilot Rynn Zenat. The way Behrens sees it, if Zenat's reports are correct, the Republic may be facing offensives from two significant cadres of Imperial forces that may not be aligned with one another. This complicated arrangement would be harder to navigate.
Leia decides to intervene in the Anoat sector and assembles a small team to sneak into the sector, assess the situation, and try to help. The elite team she crafts consists of Pathfinder Kes Dameron, Rynn Zenat, Jarek Yeager, and intelligence operative Therisa Alern. Luke sees Zenat off from Endor. He tells her he feels a pull in the Force to find something. The pilot then asks Luke if he ever feels hopeless. She confesses that in the wake of what should have been such a final victory at Endor, she feels like she is still fighting perpetually. Luke reminds her that hopelessness is what the Empire wants them to feel, and he inspires her to keep trying before she leaves for her mission.
At the former palace of Jabba the Hutt, now ruled by his former majordomo, Bib Fortuna, the leader of the Spice Runners of Kijimi, Zeva Bliss, meets in the court of the Twi'lek crime lord. She arrives unannounced, accompanied by Vigilch and Tomasso. Vortuna feigns joviality, but is annoyed by the surprise. The Spice Runners offer Fortuna a deal which may be mutually beneficial: to support Adelhard in the Anoat sector. Fortuna laughs at the utter insanity of the proposal, causing Bliss to storm out. As the Spice Runners leave, Bliss reminds the others that helping Adelhard would foment chaos, something that may help her consolidate the criminal underworld. All the while, the Spice Runners are followed out by one of Fortuna's guards.
On Pillio, Luke leaves Palpatine's Observatory with a Jedi star compass. He is soon confronted by a number of Acolytes of the Beyond, weapons drawn. Skywalker ignites his lightsaber and incapacitates most of his attackers. Yuan Howzell, leader of this group, flees, but informs Skywalker of who they are and warns him that the dark side of the Force will soon overtake them all.
Leia's strike team enters the fringes of the Anoat sector in the nondescript but highly vulnerable Barloz-class medium freighter Oggrud. They discuss the covert nature of the mission when their proximity alarms blare. They are surrounded by starships, ships operated by the Spice Runners of Kijimi.
