- "How many will there be?"
"No more than four. He travels with, at most, a fire team. Trust me. Nothing can go wrong." - ―Din Djarin and Greef Karga, on the Client's stormtrooper protectors
A fire team was a grouping of soldiers that was part of an overall squad.
History
Fire teams existed within the Imperial Army's Stormtrooper Corps[2] and Alliance to Restore the Republic's Alliance Army. In at least the case of the 61st Mobile Infantry, fire teams consisted of two rebel soldiers, who would then form four-person squads. As noticed by Sergeant Hazram Namir, who commanded a squad of his own, even soldiers who fought with another as part of a fire team felt like they were alone because of outnumbered the rebels proved to be in battle. That outlook affected how Namir trained former stormtrooper cadets who defected and joined the 61st, as Namir found himself needing to teach them how to fight one-person guerrilla wars instead of more conventional combat tactics.[3] In the experience of Bounty Hunters' Guild official Greef Karga, the Imperial warlord known as "the Client" only traveled with a fire team of stormtroopers at most, only for the Client to be backed up by[1] a full squad[4] during the Clash on Nevarro.[1]
Fire teams also existed within the ranks of the First Order Army's Stormtrooper Corps. Stormtrooper FN-2187 was part of a fire team that sustained losses during the attack on Tuanul[5] in 34 ABY.[6] After victory over the villagers was secured, FN-2187 gathered the surviving members of his fire team, only for all gathered to be ordered by[5] the warlord[7] Kylo Ren to slaughter the surviving villagers. FN-2187 found himself unable to follow the command and simply pretended to shoot.[5] In the Sith Eternal army, fire teams were known as triads and consisted of three Sith troopers. One of those three, the team leader held the rank of lance corporal and commanded two corporals. Three fire teams would then unite to create a squad, which secured an additional member via the squad's commanding sergeant.[8]
Behind the scenes
A fire team would first be mentioned in the Star Wars canon through the novel Battlefront: Twilight Company.[3] A fire team then appeared through Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens.[9] However, the unit was not outright identified as such until The Force Awakens: Finn's Story.[5]
