"We cannot prioritize one lone Jedi."
"He is not just any Jedi."
―The Grand Inquisitor and Darth Vader[2]

The hunt for Obi-Wan was a hunt the Inquisitorius began for the fugitive Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi as part of the Great Jedi Purge[3] in 9 BBY.[4] Reva Sevander, the Third Sister, arranged for the capture of the young Leia Organa to draw Kenobi out after learning of his connection to Leia's adoptive father, Bail Prestor Organa, during the Clone Wars.[3] In truth, Sevander sought to use Kenobi as a means to get closer to Darth Vader, whom she wanted to kill for wiping out her fellow Jedi Initiates in the siege of the Jedi Temple.[7]

As a Jedi, Kenobi was wanted for the charge of high treason against the Empire and its predecessor, the Galactic Republic, as issued by Galactic Emperor Sheev Palpatine.[8] During the mission to Daiyu, a bounty was issued on Kenobi that would be paid upon confirmation of his capture.[5] Despite the efforts of bounty hunters, stormtroopers, Sevander, and Vader, Kenobi regained his connection to The Force and triumphed against the forces of the Empire. The hunt was eventually called off by Palpatine, who warned his apprentice that if he continued to seek revenge against his former master and could not overcome his past, something would have to be done. Upon hearing this, Vader claimed that Kenobi meant nothing to him and reaffirmed his allegiance to his Sith Master.

Prelude

Following the Battle of Naboo, Obi-Wan Kenobi had agreed to teach Anakin Skywalker, a young boy from Tatooine and the prophesied Chosen One of the Force, and take him on as his Padawan in accordance with the dying wish of his Master Qui-Gon Jinn who had died dueling the Zabrak Sith Lord Darth Maul.[9] Over the years, both Obi-Wan and Anakin had grown close with Obi-Wan considering Anakin to be a brother of his, however Anakin would fall to the dark side in 19 BBY[10] and would help carry out the start of the Jedi Purge by leading an attack on the Jedi Temple on Coruscant in Operation: Knightfall, commanding the clone troopers of the 501st Legion. During Order 66, Obi-Wan would survive after narrowly escaping death on Utapau after being fired upon by an All Terrain Tactical Enforcer and would regroup with Yoda where, upon breaking into the Jedi Temple, both Jedi Masters discovered that Anakin had carried out the attack on the temple, murdering several of the Jedi in the temple, and had become a Sith Lord. Horrified at the revelation, Obi-Wan was sent to Mustafar to confront Anakin while Yoda chose to confront Darth Sidious.[8]

The fiery world of Mustafar was the site of a great duel between Darth Vader and Obi-Wan Kenobi that concluded with the latter locked within an armored suit for the remainder of his life.

Obi-Wan would end up dueling his former apprentice on the fiery world and would ultimately emerge victorious with Anakin losing his other arm and both of his legs, being left to burn in the lava while Obi-Wan left the planet with a hurt and dying Padmé Amidala. Darth Vader would survive his severe injuries and would be found by Sidious who brought him to the Grand Republic Medical Facility on Coruscant where he was given a life support suit to survive and would finalize the birth of Darth Vader in the process as he took Sidious' side as his Sith apprentice. Shortly before Padme's death, she would give birth to twin children; Luke and Leia. Seeking to keep the twins safe, Obi-Wan, Yoda, and Bail Prestor Organa agreed to have the twins split up until the time was right with Obi-Wan taking Luke to Tatooine to be raised by the Lars family while Leia was adopted by the House of Organa on Alderaan.[8]

During the siege of the Jedi Temple, Jedi Initiate Reva Sevander, along with her clan, were attacked while being trained by Jedi Master Minas Velti by clone troopers. Master Velti was able to protect the initiates, however she would eventually fall, leaving Reva and the other younglings on their own and forced to escape the temple themselves.[3] During their ventures, Reva and the other younglings ran into Anakin Skywalker where he would soon cut them down with Reva being stabbed by his lightsaber.[7] While the other younglings had died, Reva had survived and would manage to escape and get cybernetic replacements to treat her injuries. The Jedi survivor soon developed a deep sense of survivor's guilt and lead her to fall to the dark side.[11] Reva would desire revenge against Anakin—now known as the Sith Lord Darth Vader and[7] the de facto Commander-in-Chief of the Imperial Military[12]—and joined the Inquisitorius, a group of Jedi hunters tasked with eliminating all surviving Jedi, in order to get close to Vader in order to kill him.[7] She would be accepted and be granted the title of Third Sister, though she was only accepted into the ranks of the Inquisitorius by the Grand Inquisitor due to her dark side ability, despite viewing her as the "least among them" due to her coming from "the gutter".[5]

By 9 BBY[10], the ten year old Princess Leia Organa had developed a habit of going outside and watching various starships fly to and from Organa's homeworld of Alderaan with her toy droid L0-LA59 (nicknamed Lola). One day during a royal function, Leia snuck outside of the royal palace once again into the nearby woods, when she ran into a human stranger named Vect Nokru, leader of the Black Mask mercenary group. Knowing their intentions weren't good, Leia immediately ran and was pursued through the woods by the crooks.[3]

During the chase, her absence was noticed by her parents and had members of the Alderaan Guard sent to find her. One of the guards eventually caught up to Leia who called out for help, however he was quickly shot dead by Nokru who, after she was finally surrounded, put a bag over Leia's head and brought her back to the group's ship. After being abducted, Leia was then locked in the ship's brig as the Black Mask departed from Alderaan.[3]

Following her kidnapping, Leia's parents, Bail and Breha Organa, contacted Obi-Wan where they informed him of her abduction via a portable holoprojector. Bail informs him that they don't know who the kidnappers are and lack any leads and assumes that the kidnappers were hiding for a while. Breha states that Obi-Wan is the only one that they trust, but the exiled Jedi Masters is reluctant, asking about taking news of her kidnapping to the Imperial Senate, but Bail responds that they can't risk bringing too much attention to her. Obi-Wan ultimately declines and suggests that they send a member of the royal guard or a bounty hunter to find her instead as he doesn't want to abandon his duty at watching Luke on Tatooine. Despite his initial answer, Bail would travel to the desert world and met Obi-Wan in person where, despite his early reservations, he would agree to rescue Leia and traveled off the planet after digging out his lightsaber.[3]
