The Ongree were an amphibious sentient species native to the planet Skustell. The Jedi Pablo-Jill was a member of this species, as were Jedi Master Coleman Kcaj and the Anklebiter Brigade member Urk G'lar.

An Ongree displaying a "beaked" mouth

A species of bipedal, amphibian, piscine Humanoids, the Ongree had a tall, tapered cranium, with two eyestalks emerging from either side of the head, and generally had a lipless mouth in the center of the forehead, above four nostrils. This curious, unconventional positioning of their facial attributes often gave the impression that their heads were on upside-down, and could provide an Ongree with a fearsome aspect. A gathering of fleshy tendrils hung below the chin. Ongree had two arms and two legs, and had hairless, orange-yellow skin. Their hands had three digits each, including an opposable thumb.[2]

History

Ongree hailed from the astronomical object Skustell located within the Skustell Cluster in the Tarabba sector of the Outer Rim Territories.[4] Skustell was represented in the Imperial Senate by delegates from the world[5] by 19 BBY.[6] Ongree were present within the wider galaxy by 382 BBY.[7]

By 34 ABY[8], a journal featuring an illustration of an Ongree was displayed at the Graf Archive on Orchis 2[2]. The image, created by an unknown artist, was later restored and expanded during the Graf Archive restoration effort under Xoddam Lothipp’s tenure as Deputy Director of the archive.[2] According to the same journal, many Ongree were considered even-minded individuals who could be found as diplomats and negotiators throughout the galaxy.[2]

High Republic Era

The Ongree Kunpar Vasivola

The Ongree Kunpar Vasivola

In 382 BBY,[7] at an Path compound on the planet Dalna, an Ongree male was a Path of the Open Hand member who confronted Enya Keen with a lit green lightsaber that he claimed she did not deserve as a Jedi. He taunted her as "trash", spat on the ground, and acted as a decoy while three other Path warriors attacked her with bludgeons and blasters. After Enya dodged attacks, he attempted a death blow with the lightsaber but missed, had his knee joint popped by her scissor kick, dropped the weapon while screaming in agony, and cried out when she struck his bulbous eyes.[9] The Ongree Kunpar Vasivola[10] was a male[11] Jedi Master of the Jedi Order during the High Republic Era, stationed at the Valo Temple on the planet Valo.[12]

Ruusstha Vidyarvrikt was an elderly Ongree[13] from Dalna[14] who served the Jedi Order 35 years prior to 231 BBY,[15] and often sang a nursery rhyme to Jedi younglings, including Emerick Caphtor and Stellan Gios. Emerick speculated that the song was intended to terrify the younglings into behaving.[13] In 230 BBY,[16] one Ongree tried to flee Eiram due to the groundquakes and storms on the planet when Jedi arrived to help the fleeing citizens. A Ongree worker with a clipboard also helped citizens flee. [17] By 228 BBY,[18] an Ongree crew member was assisted by Jordanna Sparkburn in unloading containers of protein and laser parts, during which the physical labor helped channel her stress.[19]

Clone Wars

Pablo-Jill was an Ongree became a Jedi Knight[2] prior to the Clone Wars.[1] He[20] fought in First Battle of Geonosis, jumping into the Petranaki Arena to enter combat with other Jedi.[1] The Ongree Coleman Kcaj also served in the Jedi Order, attaining the rank of Master and sitting on the Jedi High Council.[2]

Imperial Era

Around 10 BBY,[21] in a bar in the Galma outskirts, a male Ongree approached the podracer Sebulba for an autograph, but the Dug kicked the Ongree into a waiter who was carrying multiple beverages, spilling them over Bossk and causing a brawl.[22]

The Ongree Urk G'lar joined the Anklebiter Brigade, a group of children led by the human Iggs who were rebelling against the Empire on G'lar's homeworld Coruscant. G'lar was one of six members of the brigade who infiltrated the Imperial Palace to assassinate Grand Vizier Mas Amedda. Amedda offered a bargain, that if the children could liberate him from the palace by eliminating the guards outside his chamber, he would yield the Empire to the New Republic. G'lar and the group accepted and successfully rescued Amedda, and he honored his promise by representing the Empire at the signing of the Galactic Concordance peace treaty.[23]

Around 9 ABY,[24] at least two Ongree were present on the planet Lanupa when the Onyx Cinder, piloted by the Skeleton Crew, undertook a mission to Skull Ridge Mountain. These Ongree bathed in the Mud Pits at the Skull Ridge Mountain Hotel & Spa.[25]

Behind the scenes

The Ongree were first developed as the species for the character of Pablo Jill in 2002 film Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones, directed by George Lucas.[1] Ongree were never identified on-screen but were named in the Star Wars Legends book Star Wars Chronicles: The Prequels, from 2005, by written by Stephen J. Sansweet and Pablo Hidalgo.[26] Ongree were first identified in the rebooted Canon continuity in the 2017 book Aftermath: Empire's End written by Chuck Wendig.[23] Ongree were represented, through the character Coleman Kcaj, in the noncanonical Minecraft tie-in Minecraft Star Wars: Path of the Jedi.[27]

PenguinRandomHouse-Logo Star Wars: Edge of the Abyss on Penguin Books' official United Kingdom website (backup link) establishes the events of Reign of the Empire: The Mask of Fear take place thirteen years before the events of Reign of the Empire: Edge of the Abyss. Instagram-Logo Rebecca Roanhorse (@rebeccaroanhorse) on Instagram (post): "Title and updated release date of my upcoming STAR WARS novel announced at SDCC. THE EDGE OF THE ABYSS takes place a year before Andor S1." (backup link) states that Edge of the Abyss takes place a year before the events of Andor Season 1, which are set in 5 BBY per the reasoning here. Therefore, the events of Edge of the Abyss must be set in 6 BBY, and the events of The Mask of Fear in 19 BBY.
  7. 7.0 7.1 Star Wars: The High Republic Character Encyclopedia dates the events of The High Republic: Cataclysm to 382 BBY.
  8. Star Wars: Alien Archive, which is presented as a restored in-universe journal, mentions Poe Dameron's mutiny against Amilyn Holdo, which Star Wars: Timelines dates to 34 ABY, meaning the document must have been published at some point no earlier than that year.

  18. Star Wars: Timelines dates Starlight Beacon's destruction to 230 BBY. The implementation of the Guardian Protocols, which Star Wars: The High Republic Character Encyclopedia places in 229 BBY, took place one week after Starlight Beacon's fall according to The High Republic – Shadows of Starlight 1. As The High Republic Adventures (2023) 4 takes place one year and two weeks after the destruction of Starlight Beacon, it must be set in 228 BBY. Since the events of The High Republic Adventures (2023) 6 are set immediately following the fourth issue and depict the expansion of the Stormwall, the expansion must have taken place in the same year. Meanwhile, the events of "Tales from the Occlusion Zone: No Big Deal" include the Stormwall's expansion and also depict the start of Pikka Adren's pregnancy. A later story, "Tales from the Occlusion Zone: Sparks Fly," states that Adren is eight months pregnant during its events, indicating that it is set eight months after "No Big Deal," and therefore one year, eight months, and two weeks after the fall of Starlight Beacon. "Sparks Fly" is set during the Battle of Eriadu, an event that begins in The High Republic Adventures Phase III - The Wedding Spectacular. As StarWars.com Star Wars: The High Republic Chronological Reader's Guide on StarWars.com (article) (backup link) places The High Republic: Defy the Storm between the events of "No Big Deal" and The Wedding Spectacular, its events must also be set in 228 BBY.

Beyond Victory 1 is set shortly before the events of the game. Therefore, Beyond Victory 1 must take place around 10 BBY.

  24. Star Wars: Timelines dates the events of "Chapter 1: The Mandalorian" of The Mandalorian Season One to 9 ABY. In addition, SWInsider "A Certain Point of View" — Star Wars Insider 228 also dates "Part Seven: Dreams and Madness" to nine years after the events of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, which corresponds to 9 ABY per Timelines. "Part Seven: Dreams and Madness" takes place after the conflict on Mandalore, which is the main event depicted in "Chapter 23: The Spies" and "Chapter 24: The Return," the final two episodes of The Mandalorian Season Three. Therefore, Seasons One through Three of Star Wars: The Mandalorian must all be set in 9 ABY as well. StarWars.com SWCA 2022: 20 Highlights from Lucasfilm's Studio Showcase on StarWars.com (backup link) states that Star Wars: Skeleton Crew takes place in the same timeframe as Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Star Wars: Ahsoka—the latter of which can also be dated to 9 ABY following the reasoning here. As such, Skeleton Crew must take place around 9 ABY as well.
