Plot summary

In the Outer Rim, on the Moonbender Colony, a group of former bounty hunters called the Remainders live among one another. One named Korvik is a doctor, and he treats a younger Twi'lek girl. Korvik narrates that most of them were in the blaster business before, and adjusting to regular life was difficult, so they were sent to the remote Moonbender Colony in the Republic. After he finishes his examination on the girl, his assistant droid Bennie gives her some candy on her way out.

Korvik continues narrating that they were sent to the colony to find solitude and peace, but also to be whatever the people needed from them. He runs the only medcenter in the colony, and the Remainders also serve as the legal system; munitions expert Barva-Zul serves as the sheriff. The Remainders defend their colony from occasional raiders, even though there is not much to steal since there are only about one hundred residents. This day, however, Bennie informs General Zandloss of an approaching ship.

The Scimitar touches down, and the Sith apprentice Darth Maul approaches the colony, causing the Council of the Remainders to gather and discuss their next move. Zandloss presents a message ordering the Remainders to leave the colony immediately by order of the Republic, but they are hesitant and do not believe its authenticity. To test this, they decide to dispatch a messenger droid to Coruscant, but Maul's probe droid shoots it down, giving the Remainders their answer. Realizing that the orders were fake, the Remainders prepare to defend the colony and dispatch two sentries to take their visitor into custody.

Outside at the main gate, Maul is approached by the sentries but swiftly kills them both using his lightsaber. With this, the council receives a second message from Maul reading "leave or die". The council seriously considers this, but know that it is their job to defend the few remaining people of the colony, so they arm themselves and prepare for a fight. As Maul enters the tower, which is the administrative center of the colony, he has to go through "The Tunnel", which is magnetically sealed, and the Remainders fire upon him from behind sealed doors. With the shots bouncing all over the walls at many different angles, Maul nearly becomes overwhelmed but is able to use the Force to get to the doors and cut through them in time. Realizing that the tunnel was lost, Zandloss stays behind and sacrifices himself in order to allow the others to fall back, but Maul continues to push forward and manages to kill the Rodian Zheemo.

Meanwhile, Korvik is delivered a new patient that has just had his leg cut off, and as he gets to work, Korvik narrates that he's only the doctor because there's no one else, and he actually has very little medical knowledge. Down multiple levels, the oldest Remainder, Jeq, who is rumored to have been an acrobat and is very skilled in close combat, engages Darth Maul with the sheriff Barva-Zul. Overwhelmed, Maul briefly flees and hides in the ventilation system, but he uses his stealth to quietly take out Jeq. Barva-Zul believes to have caught Maul when she comes up behind a man in black robes, but to her horror she discovers that underneath is the bloody body of Jeq. With this distraction, Maul leaps down from the ceiling and stabs the sheriff, and while she is left to die on the ground, Korvik narrates that every Remainder brought their own history and way of fighting, as well as their own weaknesses. As Maul prepares to move on, Barva-Zul uses a remote to set off explosives, killing herself but catching the Sith in the explosion.

Up in the medcenter, Korvik is unable to save the patient he was working on, and knows that the battle will soon be over judging by the amount of wounded coming in to see him. Outside, Maul savagely makes his way through a hallway of defending Remainders, cutting them all down until he reaches the door to the medcenter. He stabs Korvik through the chest, and Maul leaves the colony while the man dies out, believing that his job is finished. Contacting Darth Sidious, Maul informs his master that all of the colony's defenders have been killed, and he learns that this mission was simply training for him; a test to see how he would fare against different combat styles.

As Maul leaves aboard the Scimitar, Korvik uses his final moments to free the young Twi'lek from her hiding spot in the medcenter. He then narrates that while they were called the Remainders, none of them remain and maybe the term applied for those that they fought for; those which they'd hoped to survive. In a battle where darkness always wins, victory is measured in whatever light escapes.
