The Exterior was a far-flung sector in the Outer Rim Territories. In the aftermath of the Rebellion on Akiva, it was the only true Outer Rim sector that remained under the control of the Galactic Empire, in the person of Grand Moff Randd,[1] despite the efforts made to break his control, which the New Republic donated some of its finest squadrons to helping accomplish. These endeavours—along with the liberating the planet Sullust and defending Naboo from Imperial invasion—left Republic forces so stretched that Admiral Gial Ackbar feared that if the rogue Imperial remnant gathered beneath Grand Moff Ubrik Adelhard began expanding their territories, the New Republic would lack the naval strength to defeat the main Empire, which was regrouping on Jakku for a final offensive.[2]
