Official description

A psychedelic battle between past and present, light and dark, and life and death plays out in the haunted psyche of an Imperial trooper who is on the cusp of defeat.[2]

Plot summary

The episode opens with bursts of lights leading to a space battle. A space battle rages around the second Death Star. A Rebel Alliance X-wing fighter races down a trench that leads to a tunnel that goes into the core of the superweapon. It fires a volley of missiles at the reactor core, causing the second Death Star to explode.

The camera then shifts to focus on two stormtroopers with ripped helmets fighting. The red-tinged stormtrooper gains the upper hand over the green-tinged stormtrooper and swings him. As they continue fighting, rebel troopers battle stormtroopers on a bridge. A stricken Imperial Star Destroyer crashes through the gantry. The camera then shifts to depict stormtroopers advancing under enemy fire over a trench in a battlefield.

The camera then shows a giant shape-shifting claw chasing a green-tinged stormtrooper. The camera then shifts towards a battered red-tinged stromtrooper advancing through the battlefield. We see glimpses of flashbacks. As the green-tinged stormtrooper struggles, the red-tinged stormtrooper is swept up by a storm, which transforms into various images of a bright energy source, people frolicking through a beach, flies buzzing around a dead deer, waterfalls, and couple enjoying themselves on a green meadow overlooking a pond.

The green-tinged stormtrooper, who is missing his right arm, struggles to his feet. He finds himself in a graveyard which gives way to footage of stormtroopers being blown up. The green-tinged stormtrooper finds himself flying a TIE fighter through space, that is pursued by another TIE fighter. They fly around a Star Destroyer before the two TIEs dive into the trench of the Death Star. They pursue and engage fire with an X-wing.

The camera then shifts to stormtroopers charging and falling in battle. The camera then switches to several X-wings flying over the second Death Star as a Star Destroyer ploughs into the superweapon. In muddled animation, the red-tinged stormtrooper flies a speeder bike over the trench of the Death Star. The green-tinged stormtrooper pursues him on a speeder bike. They smash through pipelines, jockeying for position. The red-tinged stormtrooper gets consumed by an explosion and collides with the green-tinged stormtrooper. The two men plunge down a shaft.

X-wings plough through the wreckage of the disintegrating second Death Star. A flaming TIE fighter crashes into the flaming superweapon as X-wings plough through the Death Star. Several stormtroopers plunge down a molten core. The camera shifts to the red stormtrooper descending, with a close up of his face and eyes. The camera then shifts to several stormtroopers racing on horses through a battlefield. The red and green-tinged stormtroopers continue grappling while riding their horses. The vision gives way to clouds forming in the shape of an eye.

This is followed by footage of a disintegrating Death Star. A second wave of explosion destroys two Star Destroyers caught in the path of the Death Star. A third explosion scatters debris everywhere. The green and red-tinged stormtroopers rise to their feet among the debris. Both stormtroopers have damaged armor with bruised faces. Amidst hallucinations, the two stormtroopers reach out to help each other. The green stormtrooper's hand descends into claws.

This gives way to a vision of an avalanche sweeping through several stormtroopers. A surviving stormtrooper drudges through the snow while another bruised stormtrooper struggles to rise to the ground. Rebel and Imperial X-wings dogfight above. As the camera zooms out of the planet into space, the camera rests on the bruised face of one of the two stormtroopers before fading to black.

Work in progress art from the short

"BLACK" was directed by Shinya Ohira, who said one of his main goals when making the short was to create fully animated backgrounds to match Fujiwara Sakura's music. The short had nine scenes and nine animators, with one animator being allocated to each scene. The animators were a mix of Japanese and foreign animators, with several of the foreign animators still being students. Ohira thought the movements drawn by the students were raw and unique in a refreshing way. He added that there were veterans with years of experience and finally honed techniques among the Japanese animators, who created an impactful animation. The animators used artistic brushes to elevate their sequences, and art director Emerick Kevin added a sense of atmosphere that Ohira felt boosted the overall quality of the short. Ohira said director of photography Kentaro Waki added a sense of dynamism and immersion to the piece as a whole.[7]

Ohira described the short as a project for fans of animation by fans of animation[7] and as a "labor of love" that required the kind of effort usually reserved for feature films.[8] "Black" has energetic music,[9] but no dialogue.[2]
