Horses were hardy creatures used as mounts by the Ewoks of the Forest Moon of Endor. A horse-like species known as the orbak lived on the Kef Bir, the Ocean Moon of Endor.
Biology and appearance
Horses were creatures that could have spotted, shaggy coats of hair. They were hardy and well-suited for long-distance travel.[1]
Behavior and intelligence
Orbaks were horse-like creatures that were also used as mounts by humans.
Similar to the orbaks on Kef Bir, the Ocean Moon of Endor,[3] horses could be domesticated for transportation, including as hunting mounts.[2]
History
Horses originated somewhere in the galaxy, and were introduced to the Forest Moon of Endor by human scouting parties at some point prior to the Galactic Civil War. The native Ewoks, diminutive sentients who lived high in the trees, started using them as mounts for hunting on the ground level.[2]
Behind the scenes
The made-for-TV movies Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure (1984)[4] and Ewoks: The Battle for Endor (1985) depicted Earth ponies, along with full-sized horses, as mounts and beasts of burden for the Ewoks and other inhabitants of Endor.[5] The Ewok word for pony, in Caravan of Courage, is shown to be "gaupa", while a full-sized horse is a "pulga".[4]
Horses were first mentioned in canon Star Wars by Cliegg Lars in the German dub of Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones.[6] They were later mentioned in English in the 2015 reference book Ultimate Star Wars.[1]
