This makes the Star Wars universe one of the many realities spawned from the Zero Point and connects it to the game's larger continuity.
Gameplay
Overview
- "Fortnite will never be 'finished'. The whole idea is that it's a living, breathing PLACE."
- ―Donald Mustard
Fortnite is a free-to-play video game platform that provides a variety of dedicated game modes and experiences,[5] such as Fortnite Battle Royale,[6] Save the World,[7] Fortnite Festival, Rocket Racing,[8] and Fortnite Ballistic.[9] In collaboration with LEGO, Fortnite also featured a unique category filled with various experiences dedicated to the LEGO Fortnite brand, such as LEGO Fortnite Odyssey and LEGO Fortnite Brick Life.[10] These modes span across various genres, with each having its own goals for players to accomplish.[5]
Aside from official experiences provided by Epic Games, Fortnite also provides user-generated content. It has its own game creation system, the Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN), which allows players to create and publish their maps and experiences.[11] Map makers behind these experiences get monthly compensation based on Epic Games' engagement metrics.[12]
In-game purchase
- "Battle Pass and all of the systems in it should never affect gameplay outcomes."
- ―Tim Sweeney, regarding the concerns of pay-to-win elements in the Battle Pass
V-Bucks (pictured) is the main currency used throughout Fortnite.
While most of Fortnite is free to access, it provides various means of microtransaction through the addition of its virtual currency, V-Bucks. The virtual currency allows players to make various in-game purchases,[14] such as the Item Shop[15] and the Battle Pass. The Battle Pass is a seasonal bundle that provides limited-time cosmetic items that players can collect as they progress, though unobtained items can no longer be claimed once the season ends.[16] The Item Shop on the other hand provides various cosmetic items and bundles that can be purchased and claimed directly; however, featured items are placed in rotation and will be replaced by other items once the corresponding countdown ends.[15]
Another microtransaction that Fortnite offers is the Fortnite Crew, a monthly subscription service that gives players various in-game benefits, such as V-Bucks, exclusive cosmetic items, all in-game premium passes (or a complete price refund if the premium passes were purchased prior to the subscription within 14 days), and the Rocket Pass Premium for Rocket League.[17] Aside from cosmetic items, most official in-game experiences are free to access;[5] however, Save the World can only be accessed after a one-time purchase.[7] LEGO Kits can also be purchased through the Item Shop, providing additional themed building blocks and schematics for LEGO Fortnite when purchased.[18] Similarly, Jam Tracks can also be purchased in the Item Shop for players to expand their selection of popular songs for use in various experiences throughout Fortnite.[19][20]
Star Wars content
Fortnite X Star Wars
The Fortnite X Star Wars event occurred between December 14, 2019 and January 7, 2020 to promote the third and final sequel trilogy film, Star Wars: Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker, which released on December 20, 2019. The crossover event was first announced on December 8[21] and on December 12 the first Star Wars cosmetics were released in the form of skins for Finn, Rey, and a Sith trooper.[22]

Players were able to complete challenges to upgrade his normal armor to the beskar armor he uses in the show. They could also obtain a Grogu pet, and the Razor Crest.[23] When a user made a purchase during the first month of the season, they were able to receive two free months of Disney+.[24] It was the second Star Wars crossover with Epic Games, the first being the Fortnite X Star Wars event.[25]

Din Djarin appeared in the map, carrying a Jetpack, E-11 Blaster Rifle, and an Amban Sniper Rifle, hostile to players nearby. When the NPC sighted a player, he would engage them, the battle scored by a remix of the score from his titular show. The Jetpack and Amban Sniper Rifle were dropped by the Djarin NPC when defeated by a player, who could then equip and use them as items. The former enabled the power of flight to a player, though it would run out of power and cease functioning after several seconds before needing to be recharged, which it did automatically when grounded. The Amban Sniper Rifle featured a thermal scope and powerful shots, and a melee mode which damaged oponents with the shock. The E-11 Blaster Rifle was unusable for players other than the Din Djarin NPC, and despawned along with him upon his defeat.[source?]

Development
Initial growth
- "Fortnite is a game. But please ask that question again in 12 months."
- ―Tim Sweeney, hinting at the evolution of Fortnite
Save the World was originally intended to be the core game of Fortnite, but plans were shifted following the success of its battle royale mode.
On December 9, 2011, Epic Games announced that they are developing a brand new video game called Fortnite. Along with the announcement, they posted a cinematic trailer for the game.[34] Fortnite later entered early access on July 25, 2017, for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One;[35] with players who pre-ordered the game being able to access it on July 21, four days earlier.[1] The game received a "Teen" rating by the ESRB.[35] Around the same time, development started on Fortnite's second game mode, Fortnite Battle Royale.[36]
The early decision was to make the battle royale mode a part of the core game, putting it behind a paywall, though Epic Games later decided to make the game entirely separate and free-to-play two weeks before release.[36] On September 12 of the same year, Epic Games then announced Fortnite Battle Royale to be released into early access on September 26[2] for the same platforms with a "Teen" rating by the ESRB.[37] Following the release of the new battle royale mode, the core Fortnite game mode was renamed to Save the World.[1] With the growing success of Fortnite Battle Royale, Epic Games shifted their focus and resources to the battle royale game. As of January 2018, the company had transferred developers who worked on Paragon, another video game by Epic, to Fortnite instead.[38]
On March 12, 2018, Epic Games released Fortnite Battle Royale on the App Store for iOS devices through limited invite-only access, though the game would become more accessible in the following months.[39] Starting on August 9, the battle royale game was finally released for Android, though users with Samsung Galaxy devices were able to get first access to the game.[40] However, Epic Games ditched the Google Play Store to avoid needing to pay the storefront's service fee, opting to release on the Galaxy Store and Epic Games' official website.[41]
On November 15, 2019, Fortnite released its first collaboration with Star Wars. The Imperial Stormtrooper outfit was added to the Item Shop for a limited time until November 17.[42] Along with it, players could receive the outfit for free by purchasing Respawn Entertainment's Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order on the Epic Games Store until November 30.[43] Later in December, it was announced that Fortnite would host a special show with J.J. Abrams, which included an exclusive footage of the then-upcoming theatrical film Star Wars: Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker on December 14, 2019.[44] Following the special event, the Star Wars festivities continued in Fortnite with the addition of Kylo Ren and Zorii Bliss outfits to the item shop on December 21 of the same year.[45]
2020-2023
- "We're three and a half years in essentially, and now is when it's finally okay to be like, 'There's this guy named Agent Jones. Here's what's going on a little bit. Oh look, they're actually talking.' But for so much of it, it was very, very subtle. But it'll become less subtle moving forward."
- ―Donald Mustard, on Fortnite's narrative and storytelling
With the huge growth in popularity and success it got over the years,[47] Fortnite left early access on June 30, 2020.[48] Later, on August 13; Epic Games introduced a direct payment to Fortnite for mobile users, undermining the required service fee provided by the Google Play Store and App Store.[49] Not too long after the addition of the new payment feature, Fortnite was removed by Google and Apple Inc. from their respective digital storefronts.[50][51]
Boba[26] On February 9, 2022, the Fennec Shand and Krrsantan outfits were released to the in-game shop.[52]
On May 2, 2023, Epic Games released update v24.30 to Fortnite. Along with the update, a blog post and a trailer were released, announcing that another Star Wars collaboration would start on the very same day. The collaboration came as a limited event centered around the era of the prequel trilogy called "Find the Force." The collaboration event went as planned and ended on May 23.[32] On August 25, during the announcement and release of Chapter 4 Season 4: Last Resort; it was revealed that the Ahsoka Tano outfit would be a part of the season's Battle Pass unlockable through an exclusive quest.[53] It was released as a tie-in promotion with the release of the first season of the Disney+ live-action series Ahsoka.[54] However, the quest would not become available until the release of update v26.20 on September 26 of the same year.[55] The quest ended alongside the season on November 3 of that year.[56]
On December 2, 2023,[57] Fortnite had a Live Event called The Big Bang. During the event, it was shown that Fortnite would be getting new varying genres of experiences, which were Fortnite Festival, Rocket Racing, and LEGO Fortnite.[58] Each of the new games would have its active dedicated development team. Fortnite Festival and Rocket Racing would be handled by Harmonix and Psyonix, respectively; while LEGO Fortnite would be the first digital play experience from the long-term collaboration between Epic Games and LEGO[8] which was first announced in 2022.[59] Following the announcement, all three games were released in the span of three days; starting with the release of LEGO Fortnite on December 7,[60] Rocket Racing on December 8,[61] and finally Fortnite Festival on December 9.[62] The experiences were rated "Everyone 10+,"[63] "Everyone,"[64] and "Teen," respectively, by the ESRB.[65]
Epic Games actively develops LEGO Style of pre-existing and new outfits for LEGO Fortnite.
With the release of LEGO Fortnite, it was announced on Twitter that there were 317 detailed LEGO Styles of pre-existing and new outfits, with more planned for release in the coming months. Although, some outfits from certain intellectual properties would not become available.[66] Multiple Star Wars outfits were among the hundreds of prepared LEGO Styles to be released on day one, becoming available immediately for pre-existing owners of those skins.[67] However, official announcements of LEGO Style Star Wars outfits were posted later, coinciding with the return of the respective outfits to the Item Shop.[68][69][70]
2024-
- "Disney was one of the first companies to believe in the potential of bringing their worlds together with ours in Fortnite, and they use Unreal Engine across their portfolio,"
- ―Tim Sweeney, on Epic Games and Disney's working relations
Both LEGO Styles of Ahsoka Tano and Finn were then added during the release of LEGO Fortnite v28.10 on January 23, 2024.[72] On April 15, 2024, Fortnite and Star Wars announced an upcoming in-game collaboration event spanning across Fortnite Battle Royale, LEGO Fortnite Odyssey, Fortnite Festival, and Rocket Racing on May 3.[73] The Star Wars festivities ended on May 14 for both Fortnite Battle Royale and Fortnite Festival, with Rocket Racing soon followed on May 20, 2024.[74] Along with the Star Wars event, LEGO Styles of Darth Vader, Krrsantan, and the Mandalorian were added to the game on the same day with the release of v29.40. Aside from new LEGO Style outfits, all Star Wars content introduced to LEGO Fortnite Odyssey during the event would become a permanent addition to the experience.[75]
On August 10, 2024, during the Disney Experiences Showcase presentation at D23, it was announced by Dave Filoni that Gideon, IG-11, a special Grogu backbling, and other Star Wars-related items were coming to Fortnite.[76] Following the announcement, the cosmetic items were then added to the Item Shop on August 13, 2024,[77] along with their LEGO Style Outfits.[78] On December 25, 2024, Fortnite released samurai-themed Darth Vader and Stormtrooper outfits,[79] including their LEGO Style variation, to the Item Shop.[80]
