The game was first released in Japan via the App Store on February 20, 2012, before the release on September 18 for Android platforms. A separate North American version of Puzzle & Dragons was later released on November 8 and December 10 of that year for iOS and Android, respectively.
Gameplay
Puzzles and strategies
- "Puzzle & Dragons is powerful fusion of genres! Casual Puzzle game meets Core Strategy meets Classic RPG. There are thousands of unique Monsters in game for you to collect, power up, and form teams around. Each team serves a different purpose, and uses a different playstyle!"
- ―Official gameplay description
Puzzle & Dragons is a free-to-play video game that mixes the puzzle and role-playing genres into one.[4] The basic premise of the game is for the player to defeat waves of enemies by matching at least three or more orbs, either horizontally or vertically, in a turn-based system. Each turn allows the player to create as many matches and combos as possible by only moving a single orb freely across the board. There are six types of orbs, including fire, water, wood, light, dark, and heal. Once the player are done moving their orb of choice or if the timer runs out, the board would be paused as it calculates the matched orbs into applicable values to damage the enemies, while matched heal orbs would give healing effects to the player instead.[10]
Beyond the puzzle mechanic, the player would also be able to create a team—comprising of four Sub Monsters and one Leader—from a wide range of Monster selection.[11] Each Monster has a designated attribute that corresponds to five of the orb types on the board; that being fire, water, wood, light, and dark.[10] Additionally, one Helper Monster could also be added by the player prior to playing a dungeon level to complete the team. The team-building system allows the player to build various compositions that could grant unique synergies and buffs during gameplay, while also to circumvent special challenges and restrictions tied to certain dungeons.[11]
Dungeons and modes
- "As you advance in the game, so will the challenges! The Dungeons in Puzzle & Dragons are unique and adaptive–enemies will do everything in their power to prevent your victory! There are hundreds of Dungeons for you to explore and conquer."
- ―Official gameplay description
The various Dungeon types in Puzzle & Dragons
Before jumping into a game, Puzzle & Dragons provides six main Dungeon modes—Normal, Technical, Special, Quest, Story, and Ranking—for the player to choose. Normal Dungeon is the first mode available at all times, which is especially encouraged for newer players to learn in. The Dungeon itself has little to no restriction, with stamina usage being the exception for the case where the player plays a previously-cleared level. The next available Dungeon is Technical, this mode—as the name suggests—is designed to challenge players' technical skill by providing enemies with unique attacks. Special Dungeon is an event-based mode, with many only playable for a limited time. The type of events themselves vary from daily-rotating dungeons to farm Monsters and materials, to time-limited challenge and collaboration dungeons.[12]
The fourth mode is the Quest Dungeon, which provides a monthly-rotating floor lineups—each having a different difficulty level—with unique clear rewards. The Story Dungeon is the fifth mode that focuses on the lore of Puzzle & Dragons by providing various story chapters based on select characters. The mode also provides a fixed set of team based on the chapter, so that the story progression is given the full focus. The final mode, Ranking Dungeon, is where players can compete on certain time-limited challenges for the highest scores on the leaderboard; however, the Ranking Dungeon is only available to players Rank 90 or above.[12]
Beyond the six main Dungeon types, there is also the multiplayer mode. The multiplayer option allows players to cooperate in clearing special dungeons together, either in a group of two[13] or three players.[14] Aside from co-op, Puzzle & Dragons also has offers four-player[15] and eight-player PvP modes available during certain time-limited events.[16] The three-player co-op,[14] as well as the four[15] and eight-player PvP, allow players to join a room via matchmaking automatically,[16] except for the two-player co-op, which requires the player to at least be at Rank 150 to be able create a room and invite their partner—who should at least be at Rank 10 to join.[13]
In-game purchases
- "Monetization is sort of like a tutoring service. Basically to go to college, for example, some kids need tutors and some don't. They're both trying their best at what they do: Studying. Some people have to pay to get to a certain level; some people don't. We believe that's sort of similar to the monetization model."
- ―GungHo's founder Kazuki Morishita, on the game's monetization philosophy

Development
- "To be honest, I wasn't anticipating the sales to be so high. Even though I knew we had something fun to play, that doesn't necessarily mean it's a moneymaker."
- ―Kazuki Morishita, on the unexpected success of Puzzle & Dragons
Around August or September 2011, GungHo Online Entertainment started concept development for Puzzle & Dragons,[2] titled 『パズル&ドラゴンズ』 in Japanese.[3] During the game's conception, the development team was influenced by the card battler video games that were dominating the Japanese market then. The game was originally planned to be played horizontally to put focus on the puzzle, though the idea was scrapped two to three weeks later, which allowed GungHo to merge more genres into the game, such as putting heavier emphasis on the dungeon-role-playing element. As the game went deeper into development, the Unity game engine was used to build the game up.[2]
GungHo initially planned to do a simultaneous release on both iOS and Android platforms; however, due to the company's limited resources at the time—being both short-staffed and more experienced in developing for iOS—it was decided that the mobile game would release as an iOS-exclusive first.[2] Puzzle & Dragons then released on February 20, 2012, exclusively to the Japanese App Store.[2] Following the success of Puzzle & Dragons in the Japanese App Store, an Android version of the game was soon released to the Japanese market on September 18 of that year.[3]
GungHo Online Entertainment would introduce Puzzle & Dragons to North America for iOS on November 8, 2012,[4] with an Android version releasing later that year on December 10.[5] However, the North American version of Puzzle & Dragons runs on a separate server to the original Japanese version, which means that the two versions might not have the same available in-game content and events. The trend continued as more regional versions of the game would release with their own separate server, including one for South Korea.[22]
On September 18, 2021, a Star Wars collaboration event in the Japanese version of Puzzle & Dragons started. The in-game event lasted all the way until October 2 of that year.[19] A second wave of Star Wars collaboration event for the Japanese version of the game took place from June 13 until June 27, 2022.[20] Starting on the same date, the North American version also received its Star Wars collaboration debut, which introduced all Star Wars content seen in both waves of the Japanese version. However, the event ended a day earlier on June 26 of that year.[18]
