Jesha Cour finds a young Jedi hiding on Coruscant after the Great Jedi Purge. She offers him shelter, recalling her own past during the Clone Wars. Years earlier, Jesha lived on Amaltanna, when the war reached her world. Her brother died of starvation, her mother in an explosion, and her father by friendly fire. Jesha was sent to a refugee camp, where she met Mother Tunenep, an elderly follower of the Path of the Open Hand, a belief that the Force should remain free and that the Jedi caused imbalance by controlling it. Jesha adopted this belief and joined Tunenep in helping others.
After the Republic won the Battle of Amaltanna, the planet was devastated, so Jesha and Tunenep were relocated to Coruscant. They lived in poverty, and Tunenep expressed her wish to destroy the Jedi to restore balance, revealing she carried a jogan fruit pit containing Synox poison. When the Battle of Coruscant caused a building collapse, Tunenep was killed, and Jesha survived, taking the poisoned jogan pit and vowing to continue Tunenep's mission.
When Jesha later reached the surface, the Jedi Temple was already destroyed in the aftermath of Order 66. Believing the Jedi were gone, she began aiding the poor in the undercity. Some time after the war ended, Jesha encountered the Padawan Ryza Ayre, who had escaped the Temple massacre. She invited him into her home, where he revealed the scale of the destruction and the killing of younglings. Jesha resolved to kill him to fulfill Tunenep's belief that the Force must be free, preparing poisoned tea for the Padawan.
Development
According to Garcia, he was asked to send three story pitches set around the time of Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith, within the context of the 20th anniversary of the film. He sent them five, and the one selected eventually became the Failing of the Light. The author was interested in exploring the Path of the Open Hand, and specifically how they would react to the Great Jedi Purge.[5]
