"The Force will be free, Mother, I swear it. The Force will be free."
―Jesha Cour to Tunenep[1]

Jesha Cour was a human female who lived during the final years of the Republic Era. Originally from the planet Amaltanna, Cour lost her family during the Battle of Amaltanna. Her brother died of starvation, her mother in an explosion, and her father by friendly fire. After her village was destroyed, she was placed in a refugee camp, where she met Mother Tunenep, an elderly Atriik adherent of the Path of the Open Hand, a belief system that held that the Force must remain free, opposing the Jedi Order's use of it. Cour adopted this belief and relocated with Tunenep to Coruscant after the Galactic Republic's victory against the Confederacy of Independent Systems on Amaltanna devastated the planet.[1]

On Coruscant, Cour and Tunenep lived in poverty while spreading the teachings of the Path near the Jedi Temple. Tunenep expressed her intent to destroy the Jedi to restore balance to the Force and carried a jogan fruit pit containing synox poison. During the Battle of Coruscant, debris destroyed their residence, killing Tunenep. Cour survived, taking the poisoned jogan pit and vowing to continue Tunenep's mission.[1]

Following Order 66 and the destruction of the Jedi Temple, Cour encountered Ryza Ayre, a human Padawan who had escaped the Temple massacre. She offered him shelter in her residence, where he revealed that younglings had been slaughtered during the attack on the Temple. Upon hearing this, Cour resolved to kill him to fulfill the Path's belief that the Force must be free, preparing tea while holding the jogan fruit pit containing the poison.[1]
