F

F was a human female Jedi Padawan of the Jedi Order. She trained under the Jedi Shad-Rah Varcanella, who was killed in 22 BBY at the Battle of Geonosis. After her master's death, F was traumatized and began wearing a mask to isolate herself. During the reign of the Galactic Empire, F received a message from the explorer Valco and met with him on the planet Keelia. There, Valco showed F to where the humans Haru and Asu were performing a purification ceremony, allowing them to view the planet's memories. That night, F and Valco attended Asu and Haru's wedding in Meevai Village. At the wedding, F learned that Haru would be giving herself up as a hostage to a group of raiders the next morning. Haru's younger sister Saku attempted to persuade her to fight back, but Haru refused. After the wedding, F meditated in the forest and spoke with Haru, who explained her choice to give herself to the raiders.

The next morning, F cut her Padawan braid and removed her mask. Lord Izuma, the leader of the raiders, arrived outside the village to take Haru and revealed that his forces had captured Saku after she had tried to resist him. He attempted to execute her, but F stopped his blaster bolt with the Force and sent it back toward him. After Valco deactivated Izuma's battle droids, Izuma grabbed Haru and held a blaster to her. F ignited her lightsaber and propelled herself toward Izuma, cutting off his arm and saving Haru. She later departed the planet in her ship.

Less than a month later, F was present on the planet Inoli when a groundquake occurred. The quake caused the collapse of a building, trapping the humans Ron and Theo inside. F rescued them, and then joined them on Ron's shuttle as clouds of carbonite released from abandoned mines by the quake engulfed the town. The shuttle landed in a refugee ship, where F visited a clinic run by the Besalisk Joona. F gave advice to a group of children asking her questions, and after, Joona repaired her cybernetic leg.

The Imperial-class Star Destroyer Oppressor exited hyperspace near the refugee ship, and its admiral demanded F surrender herself. F went with Ron on his shuttle and landed in the Star Destroyer's hangar, with Ron pretending he had captured F. F was brought to a room aboard the Oppressor where she was shocked to meet a resurrected Varcanella, who was serving the Empire using the name Zero. He invited F to join him, and when she refused, he attacked her, with F avoiding each of his strikes. F and Zero charged toward each other, and when F leaped above him to attack, Zero cut off her feet and right arm. However, F placed a capsule of carbonite on him, freezing him moments later. The Oppressor began to fall toward Inoli due to explosions set off by Ron, and F escaped with him after he helped her to his shuttle.

Biography

A traumatizing past

F was a human^[1] female^[2] Jedi Padawan of the Jedi Order who trained under the Jedi^[3] Shad-Rah Varcanella.^[4] At one point as a child, she^[3] idly swung a training stick^[5] while waiting at the base of a large tree on a path between two^[3] grain fields.^[5] She saw Varcanella approach and ran up to greet him, swinging her stick^[3] belligerently.^[5] Her master offered her a meiloorun fruit, which she accepted^[3] with curiosity.^[5] F continued to speak to Varcanella, waving her stick with one hand and the fruit with the other, causing him to laugh.^[3] On another occasion, F and Varcanella both faced each other wielding sticks. F was knocked backward, but got up and claimed it was because of her small size. Varcanella responded by reminding her^[3] Grand Master^[6] Yoda was both strong and small, and F charged back toward him.^[3]

At one point, F met^[7] the explorer Valco, a friend of her master,^[8] as well as the Besalisk Joona and^[3] her^[5] droid Lulu.^[3] In 22 BBY,^[6] at the Battle of Geonosis,^[9] which marked the beginning of the Clone Wars between the Confederacy of Independent Systems and Galactic Republic,^[6] F was scarred by the blade of^[9] the Sith Count^[6] Dooku,^[9] and Varcanella died protecting her.^[3] After her master's death, F laid on the ground with tears in her eyes and reached a hand toward his body while other Jedi fought around them.^[1]

After Varcanella's death, F left a red flower at his grave.^[3] Traumatized by her master's death, she began wearing a mask to isolate herself. Without him, she was left with no purpose or guidance and was unsure of which side of the Force she would fall.^[8] While recuperating from her injury, the war spread and F began to have doubts about the Jedi and her identity. With the doubts in her mind, she set off on a journey,^[9] running from the war and the Jedi.^[3] During her journey,^[9] in 19 BBY, near the end of the Clone Wars, the Sith Lord Darth Sidious^[6] issued Order 66,^[9] compelling the Republic's clone troopers to turn against the Jedi and kill many of them, signaling the beginning of the Great Jedi Purge and ushering in his Galactic Empire.^[6]

Observing a ritual

During the Empire's reign,^[1] between 19 BBY and 1 BBY,^[10] F received a message from Valco and traveled to the Outer Rim planet^[1] Keelia.^[11] After arriving on the planet, F found Valco using^[1] his^[8] helmet and other devices to explore a forest. Valco acknowledged her arrival, and F stated her need to be cautious, though Valco assured her that the Empire would not reach her there. After noting his interest in the planet and telling her that he wanted to show her something, Valco commented that F's mask did not suit her. F looked away and noticed the human Asu carrying^[1] his^[8] bride, the human Haru, on a chair up a nearby mountain.^[1]

Valco then showed F to the edge of a cliff, where they observed Asu and Haru perform^[1] a purification ceremony^[8] in the valley below. A circle of^[1] blue energy^[12] covered the valley, and Haru and Asu saw themselves playing in a river as children. F and Valco also witnessed the vision, and F realized they were seeing the planet's memories. As the vision ended, the valley appeared to collapse. Valco told F of the deep respect the people of Keelia had for nature and explained he had shown her the ritual because her master had roots on the planet. Later, F and Valco discussed how the Separatists had exploited Keelia and stripped it of its resources. When Valco commented on the loss that war brought, F remembered her master's death.^[1]

A wedding of mourning

That night, F and Valco attended Asu and Haru's wedding in Meevai Village, where they sat outside at low tables. F noted that it seemed wrong, but Valco told her celebrations were meant to be shared with a large group. A villager offered them both drinks, which they accepted. Valco and the villager discussed the circumstances surrounding the wedding, explaining that raiders with reprogramed Separatist battle droids had demanded the village chief as collateral, but that Haru had volunteered to go in his place and would be taken the next morning. Another villager apologized for the villager bothering them, though Valco said he understood.^[1]

Haru's younger sister Saku then stood and shouted at Haru, attempting to persuade her to fight back. When Haru refused to allow them to, Saku and a group of other villagers who supported her left the wedding. As they did, Valco commented to F that Saku reminded him of her. F responded she knew what he was trying to do, which Valco replied to by claiming he did not care about her code.^[1]

Making a choice

Later that night, F stood in the forest and^[1] meditated by using the Force to levitate small rocks.^[13] She was approached by Haru, who noticed F could also feel the Magina, the local name for the Force. F expressed doubts about Haru's decision to give herself to the raiders, but Haru remained resolute and explained that not doing so would put the village at risk. Asu arrived, and Haru added that she would not be alone before leaving with her husband. After they departed, F saw a brief vision of a red lightsaber and heard Sidious scream.^[1]

As the sun rose the next morning, F used a knife to cut her Padawan braid and removed her mask, letting both fall to the ground. Just outside the village, its inhabitants gathered as the raiders arrived to take Haru, who approached them along with Asu to give herself up. Lord Izuma, the leader of the raiders, then revealed that^[1] his^[8] forces had captured Saku and other villagers who had attempted to resist. He drew his blaster pistol and aimed it at Saku, intending to execute her for resisting. Izuma fired at point-blank range, but F, who by that point had arrived behind Asu and Haru, used the Force to freeze the blaster bolt before it could reach Saku. Izuma, as well as Asu and Haru, looked at F with surprise, and the Jedi sent the bolt back into Izuma's hand, causing him to fall to the ground and drop his blaster pistol. F stepped in front of the couple and spoke about the way the people of Keelia lived in harmony with nature and the Force.^[1]

Magina rises

Izuma ordered his forces to fire, but Valco began shooting at them from atop a nearby cliff. After running out of ammunition, Valco threw his helmet to the ground below. It propelled itself into Izuma's starship and caused it to explode, deactivating Izuma's battle droids and causing his remaining forces to flee. Izuma scrambled to pick up a blaster from the ground, then grabbed Haru and held the blaster to her while screaming at F. She responded by declaring herself to be a Jedi and igniting her lightsaber. After a few moments, F used a device in her shoe to propel herself toward Izuma^[1] with super-human speed^[14] and cut off his blaster arm before he could react. The raider collapsed as F remained crouched behind him.^[1]

Later, a group of villagers gathered as F shook hands with Haru. F then departed in her ship, and as she piloted it away, the villagers waved at her and Valco removed his helmet to look up at it as she flew overhead. After leaving the planet, F jumped to hyperspace.^[1]

Carbonite crisis

Less than a month later,^[15] F landed her ship in a valley on the planet^[3] Inoli.^[16] Smoke billowed from it, and she leapt out and pulled^[3] a conduit^[5] loose from a section of her ship's fuselage missing its external paneling. She then stepped to the edge of a cliff to look through her macrobinoculars at a group of humans walking through a city. A short time later, a groundquake occurred, causing a house to collapse with two of the individuals—Ron and Theo—inside, trapping them under the rubble. F arrived at the site of the collapse and removed a large slab, then reached a hand toward Ron and Theo to help them out of the building.^[3]

After helping them, F and the other members of the group boarded Ron's Sheathipede-class transport shuttle, which took off as thw town was engulfed by large clouds of carbonite released from abandoned mines by the quake. Ron sat down next to F and thanked her, then told her about the carbonite leaks, which by that point had resulted in a third of the planet being frozen. Ron showed her a capsule of concentrated carbonite gas they were researching to take back the planet. Lulu then rolled into the room and bumped into F's leg. F greeted her, causing Ron to realize she knew Joona as well.^[3]

Offering wisdom

The shuttle landed aboard a large refugee ship, and F visited a clinic run by Joona. While she was there, a group of children ran up to her and began asking her questions. F did not answer any of the questions, but did kneel down to greet the child Mei's tooka doll Imly when the^[3] girl^[5] showed him to F. The children then began asking about the Jedi, wondering if they were real and had actually started the Clone Wars, with one saying they wanted to join the Empire as an adult.^[3]

F gave the children advice, suggesting they gather many experiences and make their own observations to find the answers to their questions, adding that they would be able to notice things they had not before, including the feelings of others. Hearing this, the child Leon ran to greet another child standing nearby. F further warned the children about the wounds ignorance, conflict, and suspicion would leave on one's heart, prompting Mei to touch the scar on F's face and ask if Joona would heal it.^[3]

F replied that it was a wound she needed to heal by herself, mentally recalling the sight of the hand of Varcanella's dead body.^[3] After Joona had repaired F's cybernetic leg, a black coating formed to hide it and she thanked Joona, who warned her to be more careful. Noticing the effect F's advice had had on the children, Joona asked her if she had considered teaching, believing that like Varcanella, she would be good at it. F admitted she was unsure and remembered sparring with her master.^[3]

False capture

The lights on the ship later dimmed, and F bundled her possessions, including a Jedi holocron, while sitting in the clinic. Joona entered and asked F to stay longer, but she declined and promised to visit Joona's planet in the future. An alarm blared, and the Imperial-class Star Destroyer Oppressor exited hyperspace near the refugee ship. It fired a warning shot at the ship, and the Oppressor's admiral broadcast a message demanding the Jedi aboard surrender. Ron found F and attempted to convince her not to turn herself in, but she insisted on doing so to protect the refugees aboard.^[3]

F boarded Ron's shuttle and instructed Lulu to navigate it back to the refugee ship once she arrived on the Star Destroyer, but before they took off, Ron arrived as well. When the shuttle landed in the Oppressor's hangar, F and Ron exited, with Ron holding a blaster and F in binders. Pretending to have captured F, Ron asked for a reward and handed F's lightsaber to an Imperial officer. At the officer's command, a pair of stormtroopers escorted F to a room^[3] that appeared like an endless open field^[5] with the floor covered in red flower beds.^[3]

Ghost of the past

Awaiting F in the room was a resurrected Varcanella, who served the Empire while going by the name Zero. F stared at Zero in shock, and he noted the flower he was holding was the same as the one she had left at his grave. Using the Force, Zero removed F's binders, and she asked how he was alive, remembering how she had witnessed his death. Zero responded that although he had died, he had returned after being given a second chance. Between them, a pillar emerged from the ground and revealed F's lightsaber. Zero invited F to rejoin him as his apprentice, explaining his belief that Jedi were misguided and must be destroyed. Repeating his offer, Zero acknowledged that F was no longer a Padawan. He demanded F take her lightsaber and either join him or die as a Jedi, but F refused to do either.^[3]

Zero accused F of running, reminding her of how she had run from the Clone Wars and from being a Jedi. Zero then stated he hated the war and the Jedi who caused it, as well as F, who had run after he had died to save her. He ignited his lightsaber and charged at F, who pulled her own lightsaber to her in time to block his strike. Zero swung his lightsaber at F several times, but she evaded each strike without attacking back and then jumped backward^[3] with the Force, putting distance between them.^[5]

Path of the Jedi

F acknowledged that Zero had saved her life and stated she would continue to protect people as he had taught her. Zero responded by telling her that she was there because of those she protected. As the hologram around the room's windows fell away, revealing the room was surrounded by viewports showing space, F resolved to continue living by the teachings of her master, and assumed a stance with her lightsaber held behind her. F's boot opened, and she and Zero dashed toward each other.^[3]

F performed a flip and leaped above Zero's head to strike at him,^[3] but he anticipated the attack^[5] and cut off her right arm at the elbow, then cut off her feet with another slash. She pushed off his shoulder, placing a capsule of carbonite on him, and Zero slashed at her again as she fell to the floor. Zero taunted her, telling F her skills were not enough to defeat him, but the carbonite began to spread across him, freezing him. F looked at Zero and acknowledged she lacked the lightsaber skills needed to defeat him, but told him she could still stop him. As the carbonite spread across him, Zero complemented F's growth, and she called out to him.^[3]

At the same time, Ron set off explosions aboard the Oppressor, which began to fall toward Inoli, allowing the refugee ship to escape into hyperspace. F used her remaining arm to flip herself over and look up through the room's ceiling. She remembered the occasion on which she waited for Varcanella by a tree and greeted him. A tear formed in F's eye, and she closed her eyes as the Oppressor fell toward Inoli. Ron ran into the room and brought her aboard his shuttle, which flew away from the Star Destroyer. While sitting in the shuttle, F thanked Ron, who apologized for causing trouble, but F reiterated that she was grateful and offered her hand to Ron. He shook it, and the shuttle jumped to hyperspace.^[3]

Personality and traits

F was a young^[2] human with light skin, dark blue eyes, and black hair, which was longer when she was a child. She had a scar on her face and a cybernetic left leg.^[3] F was traumatized after her master's death and was left without guidance or a purpose,^[8] losing both her pride and self-confidence.^[9] She struggled with her identity and was unsure of which side of the Force she would fall.^[8] F was cautious^[1] and isolated herself behind her mask.^[8] When F arrived on Keelia, she was drawn into conflict and forced to decide whether to reveal herself.^[11] Valco gently guided her without pushing her,^[8] and after making her choice she was resolute. She cut her Padawan braid, which marked her as a student, indicating she was ready to become the master of her destiny.^[17] Valco compared F to^[1] the headstrong^[8] Saku,^[1] and F saw something of herself in her as well.^[8]

Stoic and guarded, F sought out people to help despite the danger involved.^[4] When F was asked questions by the children aboard the refugee ship, she did not answer them and instead gave them advice. She did, however, greet Mei's tooka doll. F willingly surrendered herself to the Empire to protect the refugees aboard the ship. She refused to join Zero, instead choosing to live by his past teachings.^[3]

Powers and abilities

As a Jedi, F was Force-sensitive. She used telekinesis while meditating and used Force stasis to save Saku.^[1] She used telekinesis on another occasion to pull her lightsaber to her,^[3] and used the Force to jump^[5] while dueling Zero. She lacked the lightsaber skills to directly defeat Zero in lightsaber combat, but was still able to stop him using a capsule of carbonite.^[3]

Equipment

As a child, F wore brown Jedi apparel over a white shirt with a blue symbol. She had blue sleeves and socks, with green pants and brown shoes. She utilized a stick with training with Varcanella.^[3] While older, F wielded a yellow lightsaber with a thin blade that curved to a point. She wore white robes under a black cloak and wore blue clothing over her legs. She wore a mask to cover her face, a gray ring on her finger, and a Padawan braid. Her boots were gray and contained a device she used to propel her forward. F piloted a clone Z-95 starfighter.^[1] She used macrobinoculars on Inoli, and while on the refugee ship, she used her cloak to bundle her possessions, including her mask and a Jedi holocron.^[3]

Behind the scenes

Overview

F first appeared in "The Village Bride," a non-canon short film directed by Hitoshi Haga, written by Haga and Takahito Oonishi, and released as part of the first volume of the Star Wars: Visions series. The animated short, produced by Kinema Citrus, was released on Disney+^[1] on September 22, 2021.^[18] Prior to the short's release, F was first pictured in a video uploaded to the official Star Wars YouTube channel on July 3, 2021,^[19] and she was first mentioned, albeit indirectly, in a StarWars.com article the same day.^[20] F was then identified in another StarWars.com article published on August 17 of that year.^[18] F also appeared in "The Lost Ones," a sequel to "The Village Bride" written and directed by Haga, produced by Kinema Citrus,^[3] and released on Disney+ October 29, 2025 as part of the third volume of Visions.^[16] F is voiced by Asami Seto in the original Japanese and by Karen Fukuhara in the English dub.^[18]

Haga complimented Seto's performance in "The Village Bride" and was sorry she had so few lines. He described F and Haru and their chemistry as the key of the story and said they ended up taking over the story about nature he wanted to do.^[21] Oonishi said that in Star Wars, individuals could often embody both good and evil or light and dark, which is the struggle he wanted for F.^[8] Executive producer Josh Rimes described F as mysterious and said she brought a sense of serene calm to the short, comparing it to a tone poem as F reflected on her past as well as what was occurring in front of her. Rimes also explained that F's mask and cloak both literally and figuratively hid her from her past trauma.^[11] Haga explained that when F took off her mask, she separated from the unpleasant memories of her past and removed the sign of her being a Padawan, allowing her to rise up as a Jedi in her own way.^[9] In "The Lost Ones," Haga wanted to show the choices F had to make to overcome her past and move forward.^[22] Haga said that when Zero acknowledged F as a Jedi, it was in a sense her greatest wish being finally fulfilled.^[23]

Development

In "The Village Bride," F became an observer and guest at Asu and Haru's wedding after happening upon them in the forest, which was inspired by Akira Kurosawa's^[8] 1990^[24] film Dreams.^[8] Originally, Haga planned for "The Village Bride" to end when F ignited her lightsaber blade, as he believed it would be easy to imagine what happened next. However, he worried viewers would not accept that and decided to show the confrontation's conclusion. When F landed the blow with her lightsaber, the film cuts to black, as rather than just depicting the action, Haga wanted to symbolically depict the event and F's incredible speed.^[9] In "The Lost Ones," Haga wanted the audience to feel that F was unable to defeat Zero, but still had to stop him. According to Haga, the most difficult shot was when F jumped over Zero during their duel and was cut up.^[22]

F was originally a temporary name used during production, but it was kept due to Kinema Citrus staff preferring to use the name. In "The Lost Ones," Haga considered having F's real name be revealed. However, this did not occur, and Haga stated that it remained undecided whether F was an alias or the character's real name.^[25] Haga wanted to express a contrast between F and Ahsoka Tano, another Order 66 survivor. Unlike Tano, F continued to be a Jedi, which Haga thought meant she could play a different role than Tano did in spinoff works.^[26]

Haga created a backstory for F so that the filmmakers could determine how she would react during the events of "The Village Bride," although only a few details from it actually appeared in the short. In the backstory, F received her scar from Dooku at the Battle of Geonosis, where she also lost her master.^[9] The Art of Star Wars: Visions, a 2022 reference book by Zack Davisson, instead stated F's master died during Order 66.^[8] As "The Lost Ones" later referenced elements of Haga's original backstory,^[3][9] this article assumes The Art of Star Wars: Visions is incorrect.

Design

F was designed by Shiori Tani.^[21] While visualizing her, Tani was highly conscious of what she would wear, and wanted to keep it ambiguous as to whether F was Japanese or not, and whether she was a man or woman. F's clothes were based on traditional Japanese hakama, and her mask was based on menpō jaw armor.^[8] During the process of creating the character, the staff at Kinema Citrus dressed up like F to test her costume design. Producer Kanako Shirasaki loved the combination of F's hakama and boots,^[11] and Haga also praised Tani's design.^[21] Concept art of F was created by Tani for both "The Village Bride"^[8] and "The Lost Ones,"^[27] and Anna Okamatsu also created a piece of concept art for "The Lost Ones."^[28]

Early in development of "The Village Bride," Haga wanted to give F a classic send-off in a heroic ship such as an X-wing. However, because of the time period the short took place in, traditional X-wings could not be used, and Matt Martin of the Lucasfilm Story Group instead suggested that F's ship be a Z-95.^[29] F's lightsaber was designed by Takeshi Takakura and has a distinct Japanese sword motif, similar to the Mandalorian Darksaber. Unlike traditional lightsabers, it has a thin blade like a katana.^[8] Haga thought F was in a similar position to Jedi Temple Guards,^[30] who often used yellow-bladed lightsabers,^[8] and kept their role as special guardians in mind while designing F, which led to his decision for her to use a yellow lightsaber.

In "The Village Bride," the gimmick of F's boot was made to be deliberately vague so that fans would wonder if she had a prosthetic leg, which was confirmed to be the case in "The Lost Ones". In addition to the scar on her face, Haga wanted F's body to also be wounded, as he felt Star Wars has a theme of moving forward despite physical imperfections, which was the case with^[26] the Jedi^[6] Luke and Anakin Skywalker. According to Haga, this was also the reason why F continued to wander space and help people.^[26] Visually, Haga wanted Zero's design to be the complete opposite of F.^[22]
