Shad-Rah's lightsaber was a magenta-bladed lightsaber used by the former Jedi Shad-Rah Varcanella, who served the Galactic Empire under the name Zero. Between 19 BBY and 0 ABY, Zero wielded his lightsaber to duel his former Padawan F aboard the Imperial-class Star Destroyer Oppressor. Using the lightsaber, Zero cut off F's right arm and feet, but was frozen by F using a capsule of carbonite.

Description

Shad-Rah's lightsaber[3] was a single-bladed magenta lightsaber used by[1] Shad-Rah Varcanella,[4] a Jedi of the Jedi Order who later served the Galactic Empire. The lightsaber's cylindrical hilt was white and featured a pattern on each side with two curved dark blue lines extending from both the top and bottom of the hilt, with all four lines in the pattern merging into a single line in the middle of the hilt. A blue oval was located between the two patterns. The base of the hilt and its guard were both gray and slightly wider than the rest of the hilt, and a red button was located beneath the guard.[1] The lightsaber was powered by a kyber crystal.[2]

History

During the Battle of Geonosis[5] in 22 BBY, which marked the beginning of the Clone Wars between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems,[6] Varcanella was killed protecting his Padawan, F. As he lay dead on the ground, his lightsaber remained in his hand. Varcanella was later resurrected, and under the name Zero, served the Republic's successor state, the Galactic Empire, following its formation[1] in 19 BBY.[6]

Between 19 BBY and 0 ABY,[7] F was captured and brought to Zero in a room aboard the Imperial-class Star Destroyer Oppressor. F, who was shocked to see her former master, recalled watching his death and seeing his lightsaber in his body's hand. Zero asked F to join him and drew his lightsaber, though he did not ignite it. When F refused to either join or fight Zero, he responded by telling F he hated her and the Jedi before activating his lightsaber and attacking her. F pulled her own lightsaber to herself to block his attack. Zero then struck at F with his lightsaber several times, but F evaded each attack and jumped backward. As Zero made another failed attempt to persuade F to join him, he held his lightsaber out with one hand.[1]

Zero and F each held their lightsabers in front of themselves, with Zero briefly lowering his lightsaber as F spoke before returning to his stance and raising it again. F and Zero charged each other, and Zero raised his lightsaber above his head as he ran. F leapt above him to attack, but Zero,[1] who had anticipated the move,[8] cut off her right arm at the elbow, then slashed again to cut off her feet. F flipped off Zero's shoulder, placing a capsule of carbonite on him, and he slashed at her another time with his lightsaber as she fell to the floor. The carbonite began to spread across Zero, freezing him, and he collapsed to a knee while extinguishing his lightsaber. Soon after, the Oppressor was destroyed when it crashed into the planet[1] Inoli.[9]

Behind the scenes

Shad-Rah's lightsaber first appeared in "The Lost Ones," a short film produced by Kinema Citrus Co. and released as part of the third volume of the non-canon Star Wars: Visions series on Disney+[1] on October 29, 2025.[10] Prior to the release of the short, it was first pictured in a StarWars.com article published on August 22 of that year.[10] Shiori Tani created a piece of concept art for the lightsaber that was included in the short's accompanying episode guide, which labeled the lightsaber as Shad-Rah's lightsaber.[3]
