"But I was given a second chance, and so I returned."
―Zero to F[2]

Zero, previously known as Shad-Rah Varcanella[4] was a Jedi Master[5] active prior the Clone Wars who at one point took on F as his apprentice.[2] He had roots on the planet Keelia and was acquainted with the explorer Valco.[6] He died during the the First Battle of Geonosis in 22 BBY.[1] He was at some point resurrected and began working for the Galactic Empire under the name Zero. When the Empire intercepted the refugee ship F was on, she surrendered and was brought to Shad-Rah. The two dueled, and although Zero cut off most of her limbs, F used a capsule of carbonite to freeze him. He had white hair, red eyes, and light skin. He wore white and gray clothing.[2]

Behind the scenes

Zero first appeared, albeit unidentified as a corpse in a flashback, in "The Village Bride," a non-canon short film directed by Hitoshi Haga, written by Haga and Takahito Oonishi, and released as part of the first volume of the Star Wars: Visions series. The animated short, produced by Kinema Citrus Co., was released on Disney+[6] on September 22, 2021.[7] Haga created a backstory for F so that the filmmakers could determine how she would react during the events of the "The Village Bride." In the backstory, F's master died at the Battle of Geonosis.[5] The Art of Star Wars: Visions, a 2022 art book by Zack Davisson, later stated his death occurred during the execution of Order 66.[8] Shad-Rad appeared in "The Lost Ones," a sequel to "The Village Bride"[2] that released on October 29, 2025[9] as part of the third volume of Visions. A StarWars.com article published on April 20, 2025, provided Shad-Rah's name.[10] In "The Lost Ones," he is voiced by Hirofumi Nojima in the original Japanese version and by Mark Strong in the English dub.[2]
