- "That thing's coming."
"What is it?" - ―Two battle droids, watching as Valco's helmet is thrown toward them
Valco's helmet was a helmet used by the explorer Valco. It contained an array of analyzing equipment that he used while exploring. During the Imperial Era, between 19 BBY and 1 BBY, Valco wore his helmet while exploring the planet Keelia and removed it to speak with the Jedi Padawan F. He later sat with it under his arm while attending the wedding of the Force-sensitive humans Asu and Haru in Meevai Village. The next day, after Haru gave herself up as a hostage to the raider Izuma, Valco sniped at Izuma's battle droids. After running out of ammunition, he removed his helmet and threw it at the battle droids. The helmet then propelled itself up the boarding ramp of Izuma's starship and set off an explosion inside, deactivating the droids.
Description
Valco using his helmet and other equipment while exploring Keelia
Valco's helmet was a helmet used by the explorer Valco while exploring and studying planets in the Outer Rim. The helmet contained an array of analyzing equipment, and though its technology was not state-of-the-art, it was more sophisticated than the technology used by the residents of[1] Meevai Village[2] on the planet Keelia.[3] The oversized helmet[4] was gray with two vertical yellow stripes on the front and top of the helmet and two shorter horizontal yellow stripes on the sides. The lower front of the mask could open, and it had a rectangular opening that Valco could see out of. Valco wore a device on[2] his[1] back that could support the helmet above his head. The helmet had a propulsion device within it and could cause explosions. Valco's voice was modulated when he spoke while wearing the helmet.[2]
History
- "Have you finished exploring the planet yet?"
"Not yet. It's too interesting." - ―F and Valco
During the Imperial Era,[2] between 19 BBY and 1 BBY,[5] Valco used his helmet and other equipment while exploring the planet Keelia, which he found interesting. When the fugitive Jedi Padawan F arrived, he removed his helmet to speak with[2] her[1] and explained he wanted to show her something. Valco then put his helmet back on and showed F to where the Force-sensitive humans Asu and Haru were performing a purification ceremony before their wedding. Later, Valco wore his helmet while he discussed the exploitation of the planet by the Confederacy of Independent Systems with F. That night, Valco sat with his helmet under his arm while he and F attended Haru and Asu's wedding in Meevai Village.[2]
Valco's helmet begins to propel itself into Izuma's ship
The next day, Haru gave herself up as a hostage to the raider Izuma and[2] his[6] forces. After she did, Izuma revealed that he had captured her younger sister Saku. He attempted to execute Saku for resisting him, but she was saved by F. Valco then began sniping at Izuma's battle droids from atop a nearby cliff while wearing his helmet supported above his head. After running out of ammunition, he removed his helmet and threw it at the battle droids, who watched as it fell toward them. When it landed, they crowded around it while questioning what it was. It then propelled itself forward up the boarding ramp of Izuma's starship, leaving a trail of smoke behind it. The ship then exploded, deactivating the droids, and soon after, F defeated Izuma. Later, Valco carried a log while wearing his helmet, and removed it to look at F's ship above him as she departed the planet.[2]
Behind the scenes
Shiori Tani's concept art of Valco wearing his helmet
Valco's helmet first appeared in "The Village Bride," a non-canon animated short film produced by Kinema Citrus Co. and released as part of the first volume of the Star Wars: Visions series on Disney+[2] on September 22, 2021.[7] Prior to the short's release, the helmet was first depicted in the original Japanese and English dub trailers for the series, which were both uploaded to the official Star Wars YouTube channel on August 17 of that year.[8][9] The name Valco's helmet was first used in a StarWars.com article published on September 30, 2021.[4] Valco's helmet was based on woven basket helmets worn by komusō, wandering monks who covered their faces to symbolically hide their ego.[1] Concept art of Valco wearing his helmet was created by Shiori Tani.[10]
