Hi Menk. Do you know if it is possible to pipelink inside a template, such as the WEG one? - You're the Wookieepedian of the Month! And not just any month... the first month of 2013! Tell us how it feels.
- I'm quite happy about getting this award, and I was very suprised at how quickly I was nominated for it, since I've only been an active contributer since July. I was also very suprised by the amount of community support I recieved when I was nominated, which was a big confidence booster for me. In terms of what month I was chosen in, it hasn't changed how excited I am to be the WOTM, it would still be the same if I was picked in February or August. Although, being nominated for January 2013 was a bit of a scare for me, as I had to consider that the world might end before I recieved it. :P
- 2.When did you start editing Wookieepedia? What inspired you to take such an active role in the community?
- I started editing in late 2009 after a friend told me about it, but was really just a small-time editor and was gone after a few months. After spending time on some other wikis, I began to get interested in Star Wars again after playing The Old Republicand I came back on to the wiki last July. I can't really remember why I started writing, but soon enough, I'd nommed Destruction of Otoh Sancture for GA status. Since then I've stayed on the wiki and written more articles and gotten a lot more experience, but I'm still learning.
- Has CA, GA, and FA writing helped improve your writing skills? Why do you think it's so addicting?
- I'd say that my writing has gotten better since I started contributing, I'm getting a lot less objections on my article nominations than I did when I started writing. But why it's addicting to me, I honestly couldn't tell you.
- What aspect of editing do you enjoy the most? And on the flip side, what about the site would you change if you could?
- I'd say I just enjoy the general writing part of editing, and for me there's not really a bad part about it.
- What kind of advice would you pass on to new and aspiring editors?
- For new editors, I'd say that you should never freak out when you make a mistake. No one on the Wook is going to rage at you if you mess up, if you do they'll just give you a polite message correcting your mistake. I'd also say its a good idea to read up on some of the writing policies we have here, doing that will save other people a lot of time reviewing your articles because they won't have to point out obvious mistakes.
- You have your own personal project about Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds. Have you always been a big fan of the game?
- I do quite like the game but I work on it cause its something that doesn't have as much coverage as it could on the wiki and I'm able to help with that.
- What are some of your other favorite Expanded Universe works, and which film is best?
- I have to be honest, I'm a bit of a noob in terms of the amount of EU stuff I've read/played etc. most of what I know about the EU actually comes from Wookieepedia (I've only recently started reading the Thrawn trilogy), but some of my favourites would be John Jackson Miller's brilliant KOTOR comics, The Force Unleashed, and Galactic Battlegrounds of course. My favourite of the films is definitely epsiode V, with episode III coming second.
- On the other end of the spectrum: Your least favorites. Go!
- The Jedi Prince books. Not only are they completely ridiculous as Star Wars media, but they're actually the worst books I've ever read! The amount of retcons made to keep them canon is quite lengthy and laughable, but since they were fairly early EU works, they introduced a lot of still-used concepts such as the Prophets of the Dark Side. I also think Chewie's death was a stupid thing to do, (I actually know people who say that anything post-25 ABY is non-canon because of this) but I do suspect this will be overidden when the sequels come out. Don't even get me started on the Clone Wars.
- What's the Star Wars fan community like in Australia? Is everything as readily available as it is in the US and Canada? Have you ever been to any conventions or anything?
- I can't say its that great down here, and I live in the country rather than in the city, so there aren't any places nearby where I can by Star Wars things like books and comics. That being said, I did get to go to the Star Wars: Where Science Meets Imagination exhibition, which was pretty cool.
- What role does Wookieepedia play in the broader Star Wars community?
- I think Wookieepedia is a great place for Star Wars fans to find out more about their favourite franchise. The site and its writers do a great job of keeping things up to date, and my knowledge of Star Wars has greatly expanded since I found the site.
- What do you think the future holds for Star Wars... and, consequently, for Wookieepedia?
- Well, we're all bracing ourselves for the release of the sequels, we have no idea which canon will be kept or destroyed, though as I said earlier, I'm actually looking forward to Chewie's resurrection, since there's no way that the movie makers will just say he's dead. I'm still hoping the sequels will still be good just as movies, and won't be The Phantom Menace all over again.
- Any other thoughts you'd like to share?
- Well, just thanks to everyone who's helped me on the way while I've been on the wiki, and I'd also just like to say that the way Wookieepedia writes its articles, as in the in-universe perspective of the pages, is great, and I wish more wikis wrote their pages like we do.

Battle of Rhen Var FAN nomination
Hey Menk, I'm back (for now) from by brief sabbatical an I notice my nomination for the Battle of Rhen Var (Great Galactic War) failed (sad day, given that it was my first failure). Either way, I'm back now and I've renommed it, having fixed one of your objections (the redlink objection is now irrelevant). However, I would like to discuss with you your two other objections. The first, regarding linking in explanatory reference notes, is a bit tricky. Given that there's no rule regarding it and everybody seems to do it with some inconsistency, I've taken to linking only to those items that are necessary for understanding the explanation provided, i.e. dates, events, or proper nouns that need to be understood or acknowledged in order for the reader to understand the reference. I'm against not linking to these things in the notes (even if they had been referenced previously in the article proper) because the links provide convenient, one-stop access to those articles for readers who are trying to understand the note. However, I'm also against linking everything because such a standard becomes unwieldy in the notes & refs and sets a bad precedent. I feel that links for things such as 'year' and 'invasion' are unnecessary for the reader to understand the note and therefore should not be included. That said, I'm not disagreeing with your objection, but rather explaining to you the reason I've left it as-is thus far. I'd love to hear your take on it. As for the Imperial/Republic Military links, I've included them in the article but omitted them from the infobox. Generally, my standard is that the infobox includes military branches, and not the military itself (which is more than most articles). Let me know what you think about both issues. Thanks. - Thanks for the clarification. I got caught up in the moment with references made to the rather ambiguous titles of the scripts given by starwarz.com within the body of articles while trying to remove a number of red links. On the nature of the shapeshifting fake Vaders
Hey Menkooroo! Good catch adding the Star Wars Insider 135 to the sources in all those fake Vaders' articles. I went on to check that Game on! article, and it got me wondering. It says that the fake Vaders were 'intended as illusions representing Luke's fears, like the Cave of Evil scene in Empire Strikes Back. However, players were just confused.' This suggest we should treat Sasori, Kurado and Gyaos as illusions rather than creatures, but it seems to me it's more authorial intent than anything else. Additionnally, I cannot understand how a bunch of illusions could have kidnapped Golden Rod, Ol' Ben and Chewie... That would make very little sense.
Moreover, we have another problem, since the fake Vader luke fought in the Cave of Evil was not a mere hallucination, but rather a protean Dark Spirit that could impersonate the worst fears of those who encountered it—that is, a dark side entity generated by the death of a Dark Jedi near the cave. Of course, the discrepancy itself could be noted in the BtS, but how would we treat those Vaders in the infobox and articles themselves? As creatures or illusions? - Thanks. On a completely unrelated note, could you help me understand that mishmash of assassination attempt on Finis Valorum during the Eriadu Trade Summit? I've been asked to make an article on that thing as an objection on Bail Antilles' FAnom, and frankly my dear, I'm completely lost. I haven't read Cloak of Deception in ages, and I'm just losing ground trying to summarize the events. All I can see is that they were several conflicting plans, but how exactly they intertwined simply eludes me. Re:Request
I joined Wookieepedia about a year after its inception. By that time, the site had a firm identity—we knew we wanted to be an all-inclusive Star Wars encyclopedia and the most-trusted source of information for Star Wars on the internet. What we didn't know was how we wanted to go about doing so, and I had a chance to help figure some of that out. I had a chance to watch Wookieepedia grow from a fansite for nerds to well, a fansite for nerds that happens to be used by everyone else who needs to know something about Star Wars. Possibly the best thing I was ever involved with on Wookieepedia was helping obtain our table for Celebration IV, where Bob Vitas helped us out and got us an event on the schedule. For me, that was the realization, the "wow" moment that we'd hit it big, that Wookieepedia was going to be a permanent fixture in the Star Wars fan scene. Fast forward a few years, and the official site not only links to us, they openly acknowledge our contributions and point people to our pages. We always knew we were better than the old Databank, but I at least never expected them to acknowledge it!
I'd be hard-pressed to talk about Wookieepedia without mentioning the IRC channel. I remember the discussions on IRC that alternated between wild-eyed brainstorming on ways to improve the site from crazed nerds with delusions of grandeur and random hilarity. Somehow, out of those conversations emerged things like our citation policy, the overhaul of Featured and Good articles that resulted in the Inquisitorius and the AgriCorps, a number of fantastic WookieeProjects, and of course, April Fool's Day jokes. Oh, but don't worry: There Is No IRC Cabal!
Wookieepedia's formative years occurred before I was truly active. What I saw and participated in was its coming-of-age. Six years ago, everyone was in awe of a 200 KB Palpatine article with no references and non-neutral prose. Today, we don't even view that as one of our best nor fully-encompassing of the character and it's twice as long. In the nearly seven years I've been here, the site has grown up so much in terms of its presentation, the comprehensiveness of its writing, the standards it strives for, and the overall stability of its community. I'll always remember the writers, editors, image gurus, administrators, and other Wookieepedians who helped this site mature to its current state, and I look forward to seeing what the community produces in years to come. - By the way, there is one thing that puzzles me: when I started working on the article, that "Wookiee Chieftain" succession box was already there, but I don't think this box in itself is pertinent. I know of no source stating there was only one Chieftain at a time—for all we know, a Chieftain is just the leader of a clan. Who's to say that Tarfful succeeded Itchy? They weren't even from the same region or clan! However, that succession box was implemented well before I started meddling with articles here. Hey Menkooroo. I take note of the Inquisitorius' request, and I will try to review more in the near future. Must confess that, if I generally avoid reviewing, that is mainly because I don't really feel qualified for that. While it's true I've been writing a few status articles these days, they required many reviews themselves before being accepted, so I always felt my reviewing articles would be like the pot calling the kettle black. Au temps de la Guerre des Étoiles
Hey Menkooroo. Although it's already unusual to possess a copy of The Star Wars Holiday Special, I also own something even rarer: a copy of Au temps de la Guerre des Étoiles, the shortened, French-language edition of the SWHS—it's only 72 minutes because most songs are cut, and none of the French voice actors of the trilogy dubs worked on it, except Francis Lax as Han Solo. I'm willing to include information pertaining to that French version, but I'm not sure how to source it exactly. - I still have to watch it entirely, but I think there are some little oddities: I already know that, in that French dub, Saun Dann states that "Wookiee cuisine is not worthy of French cuisine." :D --LelalMekha (talk) 16:22, February 11, 2013 (UTC)
- A few oddities which you may fond of interest (or not) :
- The setting of the French dub clearly isn't some kind of Xmasish celebration, but rather the birthday of Chewbacca. Saun Dann offers presents to Mallatobuck and Lumpy out of sheer generosity, not because it's a holiday where everyone should exchange gifts.
- Ackmena's musical number was cut, but most of her interactions with Krelman and the patrons remained. Her segment was excised just after she offered her customers one last round on the house.
- I can't remember if the cantina patrons speak Basic in the original version, but in the French dub, they do. When Ackmena tries to convince the Duros to get out, they reply that they're "still thirsty" and call her "heartless" for trying to "throw them out." She tells them that an Imperial curfew has been announced, and they answer that they "don't give a damn."
- Both Tork and Thorp are referred to as "Tork."
- The text that appear on Malla's computer was vocalized in order to provide translation for the audience. (French Wookiee computer is more advanced: it talks!:p)
- The characters played by Harvey Korman were dubbed by different voice actors. Most importantly, Gormaanda was dubbed by a real woman.
- The whole segment where Chewbacca's family reunited with other Wookiees and their Human friends around the Tree of Life was cut. Only remains the shot of the Wookiees travelling in space toward a bright star.
- In the scene where Saun Dan normally says "Wookiee food isn't the greatest but I'm sure I can whip something up in the kitchen that we can all eat," in the dub, he specifically says that "Wookiee cuisine doesn't compare with French cuisine."
- The incomprehensible (at least to me) joke about the Imperial guard who hates fish is replaced by another joke. In the French dub, the guard says that he hates water. Saun Dann then declares that he himself doesn't like it and only drinks a glass of it now and then, that's all.
- Unsurprisingly, the Mermeia sequence has been cut entirely. --LelalMekha (talk) 18:42, February 11, 2013 (UTC)

Imo, anything that can be done to improve the quality of the articles here should be done, especially by the advanced users such as you and I, who have experience in the article writing business. Admittedly, I have not been reviewing as much as I should, since I've been trying to improve the quality of articles and working up to getting them to some sort of status, but hey, like I said, reviewing should be expected of us. I will strive to do better, and I'm glad to see you're still churning out those articles, you've come a long way. I feel I'm pretty much in the same category with Lelal, and don't really see myself as someone worthy of trying to tell other people how to write their FAs. I'm also afraid I have to admit that my knowledge is limited to relatively small number of novels and other sources, and I feel there is not much I can offer in the way of advice if I know nothing about the topic under discussion. - As a matter of fact, the Devastator was serving in Vader's fleet since 7 BBY. And there is a lesser known Battle of Hoth happening in 0 BBY. As regards the precise dating of Star Tours, here's what I originally post on Savagebob's talk page: "It is now pretty clear that the events of the ride must happen after the liberation of Gial Ackbar and the acquisition of the key to the Massassi Station, which are both set in 1 BBY. However, there is a depiction of Imperials and Rebels fighting on Hoth during the ride, which seems problematic at first. I discovered there was a lesser-known "Battle of Hoth", which took place early in 0 BBY. Hello Menk, I was aware of the "Dianoga dude" thing, in fact I got rid of it because it was only added based on what some anon noticed back in 2007. The difference is "Dianoga dude" is not an actual phrase, and may or may not have even been an intentional anagram. Hey, thanks for archiving. I'm still tweaking with it, and I thought you might be able to help. I'm looking for a source for this sentence "Galactic Empire, the dominant power in the galaxy at that time." Do you have any clue what could be used for it? Also, I noticed Bree sometimes makes exaggerated claims ("Star Tours travels to all galaxies and all known worlds"). Do you think they should be considered canon? Menk, this may be clear to more experienced editors but I'd like to clarify for myself. How do we measure the 200 word count here on the Wook? Copy/Pasting followed by a simple Office suite word count? Does the 200 word limit for CANs include the three words that make up the heading "Behind the scenes"? I question this as the college which I attended did not generally include headings as part of strict word counts. I'm happy to follow either, just don't know what the precedent around here is. The Naboo Elders
Hey Jeff. I'd like to ask you if you could provide me with a scan from The Official Star Wars Fact File regarding the Gungan sacred place. I'm currently working on the Nabooian Elders article, but I'm confronted to several six-year-old statements that have never been sourced. I can't seem to find them anywhere. When I started working on the article, I saw that the Elders were referred to as reptiles and that their civilization started in 7,032 BBY. - Oops, forget what I said about the e-mail address, I completely forgot that the address is not revealed when other users contact you and all that. Sorry about that. Anyway, here are the answers:-) English is not my first language, so if you come across any linguistic errors, please correct them.
1. Thank you so much! It feels wonderful, and a little surreal. It was totally unexpected. I just dropped by to make a few edits, and then I received the wonderful news. I was like, "What the… I'm the Wookieepedian of the month...???" I could hardly believe my eyes.
2. For six years now, actually. I can't believe how time flies! I make all sorts of edits, both minor and major, to all sorts of articles. I love to collect information and add things as I find them. In my job, I manage an archive, so that may have something to do with it ;-)
3. Yes, definitely, especially to those who like to interact with other Star Wars fans. For new editors, I would recommend sticking to making minor edits in the beginning, and gradually move on to larger and more significant edits as they get to know Wookieepedia better. And it's always a good idea to check out the rules and guidelines before you begin.
4. It is a place where fans can look up information about everything related to Star Wars, and where people can come together and share information. It is the largest collection of Star Wars information there is. The Encyclopedia on Starwars.com even acknowledges this, by linking to Wookieepedia's articles.
5. Some of the edits I make reflect my own personal values. For example, I'm a vegetarian, so I've added lots of material to the articles on fruit, vegetables and bread, and I also created the vegetarian article (even though it's rather short). I'm also the creator of the article on torture, and have written most of it myself. Even though the article is from a Star Wars perspective, it can teach us something about our own world. It shows, in a brutal way, how gruesome torture is and what it does to people. It encourages the reader to take a clear stand against torture, which is especially important in these times, where some people advocate the use of torture on terrorists. It makes me so sick.
6. Star Wars is definitely very popular here in Norway, even though I'm not sure exactly how many people's interest goes beyond the films themselves. The easiest way to get the books and comics is to buy them online. As far as I've seen, most of the physical bookshops in Norway do not sell Star Wars material, except for the ones that specialize in fantasy and science fiction literature. A few Star Wars books have been translated into Norwegian, but most are available in English only.
7. There is no so such thing as stupid questions :-) Actually, I haven't. It's not that I don't want to, it's mostly for practical reasons. Finse is very far away from where I live, and I don't like making longer journeys during the winter, when it's cold. Of course, I could go there during the warmer seasons, but that wouldn't be the same, would it? ;-) Who knows, maybe someday?
8. I became truly interested in Star Wars about ten years ago. I had already seen "The Phantom Menace" (which I found rather boring at that time), and parts of "A New Hope" (when I was a child, so I hardly remembered any of it). But then I saw a television program about science fiction movies, which showed a clip from the end of the lightsaber duel in "The Empire Strikes Back". It was so intense. I was like, "Wow, I must see this film someday". Later, I discovered that a friend of mine owned the film, and "Return of the Jedi", on VHS (the original trilogy had not yet been released on DVD at that time), and she was willing to let me borrow them. I took them home with me, watched them, and became hooked immediately. I bought my own copies of the original trilogy, along with the prequels (except for "Revenge of the Sith", which had not yet been released). I also enjoy reading as a hobby, and as soon as I found out that there were more to Star Wars than just the movies, I started collecting the books and comics. My Star Wars collection is my most precious possession.
9. My favorite Star Wars movies are "Return of the Jedi" and "Revenge of the Sith". Both are dramatic, exiting, touching and funny, with interesting planets and environments, and brilliant music. They are the perfect endings of a trilogy. I was in college when "Revenge of the Sith" was released, and was unfortunate enough to have an exam on the very same day as the premiere, meaning that attending the midnight premiere was out of the question. I'm proud to say that I managed to concentrate and focus during the exam while just itching to watch the movie when I was done.
When it comes to the Expanded Universe: My favorite Star Wars novel is Shadows of the Empire. It is extremely well written, and bridges the gap between Episode V and VI beautifully. I also love The New Rebellion and The New Jedi Order: Vector Prime. My favorite comics are the first volume of Star Wars: Dark Empire (a brilliant continuation of the events of the movies), Crimson Empire II: Council of Blood (gorgeous art and an exiting story), and Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi - Redemption (one of the few comics, Star Wars or otherwise, that actually made me cry). Quinlan Vos's story in the Star Wars: Republic comics set during the Clone Wars is also great. He is such a complex and interesting character.
10. That one is easy to answer. Anakin Skywalker, definitely. I love the complexity of the character and the journey his character makes, from hero to villain and back again. He is the personification of a fallen angel. It brings so much to the Star Wars story, and is part of what makes Star Wars so great.
11. Yes, I can:-) I know almost all of the symbols by heart. I learned by reading and translating all the Aurebesh I could find, in source material, comics, The Clone Wars animated television series etc. I have trouble with a few of the symbols that are rarely used, but other than that, I can read Aurebesh without referring to a chart. I love to translate Aurebesh as I find it, it's really fun.
12. I'm an animal rights activist. There's hardly any focus on animal rights in Star Wars, but every day, in countries around the world – our world – animals are abused and killed. Know that the everyday choices you make, such as what you eat for lunch and the kind of shampoo you buy, may be directly supporting some of this abuse. I urge everyone to learn more about this issue, and do what they can to adopt a cruelty-free lifestyle.

Hey Menk. You may remember in the CT about Reducing the maximum GAN word count to 1000 words that you suggested we grandfather all GAs currently over 1000 words. However, during a recent bout of insanity I am compiling a list of all GAs over a 1000 words which can be seen here, (Still haven't finished yet, only up to locations). Brangus Glee
Hello Menk, as you were the user who brought Brangus Glee to CA status. You said he's a pilot, but the card text never says any such thing about him being a pilot. From what I can see, the only thing remotely close to him being a pilot is the game stats saying "Adds 2 to power of anything he pilots." Malakili and "Demolition"
Hey Menkooroo. I decided I would work on Malakili for the current barn burner. I just reviewed his cutscenes in Star Wars: Demolition. There are only to possible endings: either Malakili wins Jabba's demolition games or he loses. However, if he does win, a cutscene shows Lyn Me being eaten by the rancor as a reward. Since we know for sure that Lyn Me didn't die like that, do you think I can conclude safely that Malakili did not win the demolition derby, hence making his "losing cutscene" canon? --LelalMekha (talk) 23:50, April 25, 2013 (UTC)
- Of course, I'll write a good footnote to explain the reasoning. Yeah, Demolition is pretty wacky, but the characters and Jabba's derby were mentioned in later sources. Talking about that doofus, I'd love to see him mentioned in his pre–Galaxies period in a future story or reference book... Hey Menk. Following the failure of the talk page policy CT earlier this month, I have modified the proposed policy based on the feedback received therein. The most notable change was the redefining of off-topic posts as posts that can be removed without archiving. As a compromise between the majority opinion that we should not be forced to keep the posts and the minority that says removing them can be harmful, I have included a footnote suggesting, but in no way requiring, that users consider leaving the post in place if circumstances allow. All changes made between the closure of the previous CT can be seen in this diff.
As you were one of the most vocal supporters of not removing off-topic posts, I would like your opinion on the revised proposal, located at [[User:Master Jonathan/Talk page policy]], before starting a new CT. I am also asking Tope, who was one of the most vocal opponents of the previous proposal, for his feedback as well to get opinions from both sides. Telling someone the incorrect way to pronounce someone's name is in no way discussing a change in an article. The user was not acting in good faith to help another user out, which is clear if you looked at any of their other edits, which led to them being blocked. It was vandalism, and not "discussion relating to changes to the article, not for a discussion about the topic in question", and has no place on the talk page. The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia explicitly states that Bow appears in Purge, as "A clone commander who saved Darth Vader from being killed by Jedi Knights on Kessel after the events of Order 66." However, beyond that it's never made clear exactly which clone in Purge is Bow. Vader addresses one as "Commander," so I guess that one can be Bow, but the fact that Lucasfilm still hasn't made a timeline of Purge in relation to Dark Lord (in which Appo is killed) makes it harder to know for sure if Bow is the "Commander" in Purge. Redirects
Hey Menk, although I agree to some degree that they should be left alone, I feel the links should still be fixed. My reasoning for this is that if for whatever reason in the future, a redirect were to be deleted, it would leave redlinks on archive pages. Eventually these would make their way onto the list of wanted pages, which will only display 1000 redlinks at a time, meaning at some point in the future it has the potential to get out of control. When fixing them, I pipelink specifically to avoid modifying the actual wording, thus keeping the text itself intact. Hope that makes sense, Supreme Emperor (talk) 05:17, October 11, 2013 (UTC)
- Sorry, but this popped up on my watchlist. :P The issue here is that admins, myself included, typically move the page to a new title without leaving a redirect, and then simply leave it at that without even checking for links to the old title. While you can argue that we should be fixing these links, closing CT threads involves enough already IMO without adding another step to the process, and even if we did start fixing these links when we close threads, that won't change the hundreds of old threads with broken links. So I personally see no problem with what Supreme is doing, especially since he is taking care to not actually modify the displayed text. I see it as that the act of renaming the page without a redirect improperly modified the posts by recoloring the link and sending clicks to a different page, and that Supreme's changes actually restore the post to its original state by changing the link back to the original blue and sending users to the same page that the link sent them to when it was first posted. If you mean that "the item was an unremarkable black data card" sentence, that is about the Caamas Document. Hello Menk, do you have the Star Wars Character Encyclopedia? My lack of access to all the sources that give relevant info to the Imperial advisors is the main thing inhibiting me from writing up and nominating the Unidentified red-and-black-robed Imperial advisor article.
