Publisher's summary

When valuable prisoner Lune Divinian disappears from his cell on Yavin 4, Luke is determined to find him. As the only link to X-7, the assassin sent to kill Luke, Div is the only hope to staying a step ahead of the Empire.

Across the galaxy, X-7 has escaped from Imperial custody. Caught between the past and the present, X-7 must fight the only battle for which he's not prepared: the battle with his identity. But his desperate confusion makes him more dangerous than ever.

A chance encounter and a figure from the past bring X-7, Luke, and Div together for a final showdown that will reveal everything—or destroy them all.

Plot summary

Lune "Div" Divinian, an uncooperative prisoner of the Rebel Alliance, is sprung from incarceration by Imperial agents. Luke Skywalker follows the kidnappers to their vessel and secretly boards it as it departs Yavin 4. The ship rendezvouses with an Imperial Star Destroyer, but Luke is able to retrieve Div thanks to the intervention of a TIE fighter piloted by Ferus Olin. On a dead moon, Ferus talks privately with Div, who is deeply resentful of the former Jedi apprentice for his failure to prevent the death of Div's family, including their mutual close friend Trever Flume. Div is further incensed by Ferus' bold plan to use Trever's identity to trick the assassin X-7 into becoming a weapon against the Empire.

Elsewhere, X-7 struggles with a profound identity crisis. The ordinarily impeccable killer is overwhelmed by conflicting emotions. He confronts his master, Imperial commander Rezi Soresh, who explains that X-7 is the result of Project Omega, an imperial program to create the perfect assassin from a person whose past is completely erased. Darth Vader, meanwhile, has learned of Soresh's plan to kill Luke Skywalker. The Dark Lord, wanting Skywalker alive, orders Soresh to abandon his plot.

The Alliance's next target is Belazura, Div's former home. The Rebels hope to destroy the Imperial garrison on the planet and thus stir the downtrodden populace into rebellion. As part of this assignment, Div and Ferus carry out the charade that X-7 was once Trever Flume. X-7, desperate for a connection to his past, comes to believe this. He seemingly aids the Rebels with access codes into the garrison, and information that Darth Vader will be visiting the installation, making it all the more tempting a target. However, X-7's information and codes are faulty. He has engineered a trap for the Rebels, and for Div. Though X-7 tries to kill Div, he only wounds him with a blaster shot – perhaps testament to his true nature. Ferus has no choice but to kill X-7, who dies believing he was once Trever Flume. The Rebels succeeded in destroying the garrison.

Continuity

It was suggested in the book that this story took place about two months after the Battle of Yavin. Darth Vader was aware that Luke Skywalker was the Rebel who destroyed the Death Star. Vader's discovery of this fact was first established in Marvel Comics' Star Wars #35 (1980), and elaborated upon in Vader's Quest (1999), a comic series from Dark Horse.[1]
