Synthstones were the measure of payment used by Cestus Cybernetics to acquire its vast holdings on Cestus from the X'Ting.
Presumably they were cheap facsimilies of actual gems, as Galactic Republic law determined that their use by Cestus Cybernetics was equivalent to counterfeit money.
