Range troopers were a specialized variant of the Galactic Empire's stormtroopers[7] organized into the range corps.[6]

Operating in rugged, cold environments on the frontier of the Galactic Empire,[9] range troopers were tough soldiers[8] equipped with specialized vambrace armor.[1] Their helmets were similar in design to both the Imperial combat assault tank pilot's and coastal defender stormtrooper's helmets, with heavy armor equipped with external fur and a chestplate much like that of cold weather assault stormtroopers.[7] They were commonly armed with E-10R blaster rifles[3] and Smart Rockets.[4] A group on Uokara used mobile bacta unit sprayers against the pathogen known as Ghymnon.[5] They were also equipped with magnetomic gription boots which allowed sure footing atop fast-moving vehicles.[1] However, the range troopers on Banas[10] and members of the defense battalion on Sienar Test Facility 73 lacked these boots.[4] The troopers were some of the toughest in the Imperial Military and viewed other forces as "softer" amateurs.[1] However, the environments they tackled were not as extreme as those handled by cold weather assault stormtroopers, who were known as "snowtroopers."[11] All the same, snowtroopers and range troopers could also operate side-by-side in cold environments.[10]

History

At some point during the Galactic Empire's reign, Darth Vader used them to spray bacta from large floating tanks into the body of water along the coastline on the world of Uokara, to eradicate the being known as Ghymnon.[5] Several range troopers led by Captain Denwade Banevans were deployed to Vandor during the reign of the Empire in 10 BBY and guarded a 20-T Railcrawler conveyex transport when Tobias Beckett's crew raided the transport for coaxium.[3]

In 4 BBY, range troopers were stationed on the planet 73 at Sienar Test Facility 73 as part of a larger defense battalion. One of these troopers attempted to stop the rebel operative Cassian Andor from stealing a prototype TIE Avenger on 73 with a Smart Rocket, though Andor managed to fire the TIE Avenger's heavy laser cannon to disintegrate the soldier and blast a hole through the blast door.[4]

Range troopers were active on the cold, rugged frontier planet Banas[9] alongside snowtroopers under Commodore Kurtruk. Two members of the Alliance to Restore the Republic, Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa confronted the Imperial forces during their mission to Banas.[10]

Sentinel owned a suit of range trooper armor for use in the Grand Arena in his Hunter matches, with Sentinel once being quoted as saying that range troopers were the type of tough soldier he liked.[8]

Behind the scenes

Range troopers appear in the 2018 film Solo: A Star Wars Story.[3]

The magnetic effect of their boots was achieved by the filmmakers using a complicated wire rig for the actors' feet.[12]

The Legends video game Star Wars: The Old Republic created an in-universe armor set named "Arctic Trooper Armor" based on the Range trooper's design.[13]
