"It is holy relic of the Quermian people! My people! It belongs back at home, not here, in this…this…shrine to wholesale cultural theft!"
―Needle, on a holy relic taken from Quermia and put on display in the Imperial Museum[8]

Quermia was a terrestrial planet located in the Outer Rim Territories. It was the namesake of the Quermian species, whose ancestors were settled on Quermia by Arkanian scientists. Quermia was located in Separatist space during the Clone Wars, isolating it from the Galactic Republic. Although the extensive blockade of Quermia was lifted after the Confederacy of Independent Systems collapsed, the planet fell under Imperial rule shortly thereafter.

Description

"Ride the Perlemian: Coruscant to Quermia."
―A poster advertises travel to the planet[9]

Quermia was a planet[6] located in the Nilgaard sector's Quermia system[3] in the Outer Rim Territories. The world was situated in grid square S-5 on the Standard Galactic Grid.[1] A terrestrial world, Quermia's surface featured green landmasses and expanses of ocean.[5] It sat close to the end of the Perlemian Trade Route hyperlane,[1] which extended north-east from the Core Worlds planet Coruscant[10] and connected it to the astronomical object Makem Te.[1] Quermia also lay at an intersection between the Perlemian Trade Oute and the Overic Griplink hyperspace route, which linked the world to[4] the planet[6] Mon Cala.[4] A separate hyperspace route connected Quermia to the planet Toola.[1] Quermia was located near the planet Troiken, homeworld of the Xexto species.[11]

History

"War has come again! Return to your homes and pray for swift victory or swifter defeat—but first visit the Personal Defense Emporium to prepare for the coming conflagration! Arm yourselves! Arm your families! Ready yourselves with generators, food, and water! Every customer will be entered into our interplanetary raffle for tickets to Alsakan, Quermia, and Lianna!"
―An announcer, during the protests on Reintegration Day[12]

Long before the Imperial Era, Arkanian scientists settled Quermia with a genetic offshoot of the Xexto species. Named for their homeworld, these beings were the ancestors of the Quermian species.[7] While the origins of the Quermian species were unknown to the larger galactic community, Quermians and Xexto shared so many of the same genetic markers that xenobiologists believed them to share at least a common ancestor. How this came to be was one of the galaxy's greatest mysteries.[11] A member of the Galactic Republic, Quermia was located in Separatist space during the Clone Wars,[7] a conflict between the Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems that began in the year 22 BBY.[5] Isolated, the planet suffered heavily under an extensive Separatist blockade.[7]

The Quermian Jedi Master Yarael Poof was a native of Quermia.

With the fall of the Confederacy at the end of the war[7] in 19 BBY,[5] the blockade over Quermia was lifted. However, the planet fell under the rule of the Galactic Empire, which the Quermians did not usually consider to be a substantial improvement over Separatist control.[7] In the same year,[9] Quermia was advertised as a destination worth visiting along the Perlemian Trade Route. One poster found on the moon Pantora suggested travelers take a flight to the planet aboard Luxury 3000 space yachts.[13] Not many months after the Empire's rise, in 19 BBY,[14] the Personal Defense Emporium business on the planet Coruscant held an interplanetary raffle for their customers, prizes including tickets to Quermia, the world Alsakan, and[12] the astronomical object[15] Lianna. As Senator Mon Mothma walked through the Coruscant's lower levels, she heard an announcer advertise the promotion via loudspeaker.[12]

By 3 ABY,[16] a holy relic of the Quermian people had been taken from Quermia and put on display in the Imperial Museum on Coruscant, the capital of the Galactic Empire.[8] Quermia was mentioned as the Quermian homeworld in "Species From A to Z," a survival compendium sent out by the human Carson Teva during the New Republic Era.[17] Quermia was later mentioned in an artist's journal, which was restored, expanded, and displayed at the Graf Archive[18] at some point no earlier than 34 ABY.[19] The Quermian homeworld was also one of many planets depicted in galactic maps thought to be drawn by the Ithorian artist Gammit Chond. Unearthed from the Graf Archive's Shadow Stacks, the ancient maps were refurbished by Director Amel Fortoon many years after the First Order-Resistance War.[5]

Inhabitants

Quermia was the homeworld of[6] the garden[20] Quermian species,[6] who spoke a language of the same name. After the Arkanians departed Quermia, the Quermians developed a society centered on a largely communal lifestyle, as well as the contemplation of philosophy. The ease at which members of the species were able to communicate and share their feelings and concerns was a contributing factor in how Quermians were able to maintain the long-lasting peace of their society. While Quermia's history was not entirely peaceful, strife usually came from outside influence instead of internal struggles.[7]

Yarael Poof, a Quermian Jedi Master who served on the Jedi High Council during the final years of the Galactic Republic, hailed from Quermia,[6] as did the Quermian Rebel Alliance Pathfinder Needle. The latter believed that the Quermian holy relic on display in the Imperial Museum was stolen and should be returned to Quermia.[8]

Behind the scenes

Quermia was first mentioned in the current Star Wars canon in the 2015 reference book Ultimate Star Wars[21] and first visually depicted in the 2016 reference book Star Wars: Galactic Atlas, written by Emil Fortune and illustrated by Tim McDonagh.[5] In the Star Wars Legends continuity, Quermia was first mentioned in the 1999 book Star Wars Episode I Who's Who: A Pocket Guide to the Characters of The Phantom Menace, written by Ryder Windham.[22]
