"I sat down for a game of cards with a cheerful Lutrillian, the friendliest gambler in the place."
―An entry of an artist's journal[5]

Lutrillians were a sentient species of humanoids that were native to the planet Lutrillia. They were distinguished by their broad faces, fuzzy jowls, and wide-set eyes. Lutrillians lived a nomadic lifestyle and traveled around their homeworld. They loved adventure and discovery, often going off-world to explore other cultures. They were considered, by other species, to be very agreeable, but had a small problem with greed.

At some point during the Clone Wars, there were at least eight Lutrillian detainees in the Republic Judiciary Central Detention Center on Coruscant. During the Imperial Era, the Lutrillian Secon Daree was a Rebel pilot. Shortly before the Battle of Yavin, Ownellco and another Lutrillian visited the cantina of Mos Eisley the day Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker met Han Solo and Chewbacca.

Biology and appearance

Lutrillians stood out for their broad faces with wide-set eyes. They had fuzzy jowls and long spiked ears that pricked up. A Lutrillian's nose had a distinctive line that went vertically through the middle and through the upper lip. Their skin was usually ruddy,[2] it could also be white[1] or brown.[3] Some Lutrillians had whiskers on their face.[6]

Society and culture

Lutrillians hailed from Lutrillia,[5] a planet[7] in the Yarith sector in the Outer Rim Territories.[8] The species tended to live a nomadic lifestyle on their homeworld avoiding subterranean predators.[5] Lutrillians were fond of adventure and discovery and frequently traveled off-world to explore other cultures. They were considered very agreeable, but had a small problem with greed.[5]

Lutrillians in the galaxy

"Kill him, Hardeen! Like the Jedi!"
―A Lutrillian, to Obi-Wan Kenobi (posing as Rako Hardeen)[2]

During 382 BBY[9] at Black Spire Outpost a Lutrillian, a human woman with brightly colored hair, and a human man were attempting to steal Sky Graf's ship. Jedi Knight Rooper Nitani resolved the conflict before violence could break out.[10] In 231 BBY[11] one Lutrillian was seen talking with a Koorivar in the streets of Efavan, a city on the world of Vorzyd V.[12] Sometime before 48 BBY[13] a Lutrillian, Regump, ran tugboat docking remotes the ocean moon of Devshi. Regump was mind-tricked by a young Mace Windu into becoming a Skiff Captain during Windu's Mission to Devshi[14]

Around 18 BBY[15] a Lutrillian was prisoner on the planet Erebus until they were set free by Clone Force 99 during the Rescue of Edmon Rampart.[16] During the Clone Wars, the Lutrillian Maysano was a criminal wanted for murder.[1] At least eight Lutrillians were in the Republic Judiciary Central Detention Center, where many became involved in a riot that saw the escape of Moralo Eval, Cad Bane, and a disguised Obi-Wan Kenobi.[2]

During the Imperial Era, Pomi Harchmak, a Lutrillian who worked for Pryce Mining, a mining company on Lothal, she managed heavy-equipment inventory operations. She was accused by Arihnda Pryce of embezzling funds to clear the guilt from Pryce's Mother.[17] A set of two sad looking Lutrillians blocked automated load lifters in Lothal's Old City[18] in 5 ABY.[19] On Lothal, in 4 BBY[20], an Lutrillian foreman provided shelter to criminals from the Gray Syndicate in his warehouse. One such criminal was artist and poet Holshef who he hid in exchange for credits. Holshef had been late with payment so Merei Spanjaf payed his debt for the week in his stead. the next week the Lutrillian became agitated with the empire's efforts to crackdown on dissidents so Spanjaf paid him double his due.[21]

A Lutrillian named Secon Daree[22] was a part of the Alliance to Restore the Republic by 1 BBY and fought in the attack on Lothal.[3] In 0 BBY, two Lutrillians,[23] one of whom was named Ownellco,[24] were at Chalmun's Spaceport Cantina on Tatooine when Luke Skywalker met Han Solo.[23] In 0 ABY[25], a Lutrillian was seen in a bar on Nar Shaddaa and was shocked when the Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker drew his Lightsaber.[26] Another Lutrillian was at a gambling table when Skywalker and Solo bet and lost the money they were meant to buy supplies with.[27] A Lutrillian was in Cloud City when the Baron Administrator, Lando Calrissian, told the people to get out before the Galactic Empire fully occupied the place.[4]

On Akiva's capital city of Myrra in 4 ABY[28], a Lutrillian was seen sleeping with a half eaten amphibian in his hand. he was just barely startled when Norra Wexley rode past in a speeder.[29] During the New Republic Era, a Lutrillian was at the Colossus refueling station on Castilon.[30]

The Lutrillians first appeared in the background of the cantina scene of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, released in 1977. Stuart Freeborn designed the characters from costume sketches by John Mollo.[31] The species were originally called Hair Mouse during production.[32] The eyes of the mask were made of thermoformed plastic.[33] There were two Lutrillian mask made for A New Hope, One with flocked hair and one without, and also sported subtle changes to the eyes and wrinkles.[32] The Lutrillian identified as Atheloe in the Legends continuity[34] featured more in the "Lost Cut" of the film, where one of them spoke to an Unidentified bug-faced species.[35]

Therefore, the events of Mace Windu 1 must take place by that year.

  15. Per the reasoning here, Season 2 of Star Wars: The Bad Batch takes place around 18 BBY. The tally marks made by Omega in The Bad Batch Season 3's first episode, "Confined," indicate the episode must take place at least twenty-one standard days following her capture as depicted in the Season 2 episode "Plan 99." According to StarWars.com "Confined" Trivia Guide | Star Wars The Bad Batch on StarWars.com (backup link), Omega spends about 164 further days in captivity by the end of "Confined." As such, the events of Season 3 must begin around 18 BBY.
