Plot summary
Fear and nothingness
On the Outer Rim world of Xais, Keeve Trennis reacts with fear and horror as Terec turns to stone following an attack by the Great Leveler. Trennis attempts to flee but is pursued by Zeetar, who is riding his power armor. Before he can kill Trennis, Tempest Runner Lourna Dee saves her life by slicing through Zeetar's armored blaster arm with Trennis' lightsaber. When Zeetar protests, Dee reminds Zeetar that the Nihil need the Jedi alive for what they are trying to achieve. She wants to ascertain whether what happened on Grizal was a fluke or the beginning of the end.
Terec's calcification also causes their twin Ceret to cry out in terror aboard the Star Cruiser Ataraxia. Jedi Master Sskeer and Marshal Avar Kriss come to Ceret's aid. Kriss is unable to sense Ceret's song through the Force, as well as Skeer's presence. Ceret realizes that Terec is in danger. Jedi Knight Nooranbakarakana recommends that Ceret go to the sick bay. Ceret Force pushes Nooran and runs towards the bridge controls. Kriss calls the medical droids for help.
As Kriss attends to Nooran, Sskeer speaks to Ceret and asks if what they are experiencing is similar to their encounter with the Drengir on Sedri Minor. Sskeer says the Drengir were dark and evil but this is new threat facing Terec is empty and void. Ceret changes the ship's course. Kriss tells Sskeer to let them change course since Ceret is leading them to Terec. Terec takes their ship to the planet Xais, a planet in the Rocun Cluster that is home to a former gas refinery. Ceret asks them to save them before collapsing into a hibernation trance. While attending to Ceret, Kriss says she can barely sense them and believes that Ceret is in a state between life and death.
Skirmish on Xais
As the Ataraxia arrives above Xais, the ship is attacked by several Nihil starfighters. While Nooran and Galdros fly the Jedi starship, Marshal Kriss and Master Sskeer head towards their Jedi Vectors. On the way, Kriss asks about Sskerr's visit to Doctor Gino'le. Sskeer is evasive and says that he will resolve to find his former Padawan Trennis. Once airborne, Kriss deduces the location of the Nihil base and asks Nooran to provide them with covering fire.
Entering the Nihil base's hangar, Sskeer spots Trennis' stormship Ransacker. However, Kriss is unable to sense Trennis or Terec. Against Kriss's objections, Sskeer shoots down several fleeing Nihil starships. He then jettisons from his Jedi Vector and fights a crowd of Nihil fighters. He uses his lightsaber to cut down several Nihil belligerents. Kriss watches the slaughter with shock and outrage and tells Nooran that she will land to deal with Sskeer, whom she is angry with for reneging on his earlier promise not to touch the dark side of the Force again.
Dee orders her surviving Nihil fighters to retreat but Zeetar is not intimidated and fires several rockets at the Trandoshan Jedi Master, slowing him down. After checking that Uttersond has evacuated the Leveler on escape ship, Dee prepares to retreat and leaves Zeetar to fight with Sskeer. Sskeer fights with Zeetar, who attempts to crush him with an axe. However, the Jedi Master slices through the legs of his armored exo-skeleton, trapping Zeetar who begs for mercy. Sskeer demands to know where Trennis is.
Trennis calls out to her master, who is relieved that she is alive and unharmed. Trennis recalls that something was attacking her and Terec in the shadows. She says they need to help Terec. Kriss finds the comatose Terec and the Jedi attend to him. Just then, Dee departs on a black armored starship. Vowing vengeance, Kriss vows not to let the Tempest Runner escape and stretches out her arms towards the fleeing ship.
