Secret Rebel Agent Kyle Katarn will do anything to avenge his father's untimely death at the hands of the Empire. When Kyle is threatened by 8t88 in a Nar Shaddaa bar, he tracks down the droid and secures a mysterious disk that could put him on the path to learning why his father was killed. Kyle soon finds that the disk contains information about a map to the Valley of the Jedi, a place his father had stumbled upon and kept secret. Now it's a race between Kyle and the Empire to see who can get to the map—and the Valley—first.
Based on the popular Star Wars: DARK FORCES and Star Wars: JEDI KNIGHT interactive games, Rebel Agent is part two of a trilogy written by acclaimed author William C. Dietz (The Final Battle) and illustrated by the award-winning artist Ezra Tucker (the Adventures of Little Nettie Windship children's book series).
Inside flap
After Kyle's father, Morgan Katarn, discovers the Valley of the Jedi, Morgan passes along a description of it to a Jedi named Rahn, who falls into the hands of Jerec the Dark Jedi. From Rahn's mind, Jerec extracts information that leads back to the Katarn farm. Meanwhile, the droid 8t88 propositions Kyle in connection with a mysterious disk…and a chase ensues. Kyle secures the disk and learns of his father's discovery—but arrives too late to save the map. Or does he? The answer lies with 8t88.
This brand-new adventure trilogy provides background to, and incorporates elements of, the LucasArts DARK FORCES and JEDI KNIGHT interactive games. Rebel Agent follows Soldier for the Empire and prepares the way for Jedi Knight.

Dietz and accompanied by 25 painted illustrations by artist Ezra Tucker.
Plot summary
THE PAST: Morgan Katarn transports a colony of farmers from Sulon to the distant uncharted world of Ruusan to escape the scrutiny of the Empire. While on a trek through the wilderness, he encounters several native bouncers – a species of orblike beings – who describe to Morgan a prophecy of a Jedi Knight who will fight a battle on their world and free the tortured spirits found there. The bouncers lead Morgan to the fabled Valley of the Jedi, lost site of an ancient battle between the forces of light and darkness.
THE PRESENT: Years later, a band of Dark Jedi led by Jerec subjugates the planet Dorlo and captures Jedi survivor Qu Rahn. Jerec, eager to find the Valley of the Jedi, interrogates Rahn. Probing Rahn's mind, Jerec discovers that the late Morgan Katarn knew the Valley's location and passed this information to his son, Kyle. Jerec slays Rahn and tasks 8t88, an information broker droid, to continue the search. 8t88 finds an encoded holodisc in Morgan's old residence on Sulon, but he cannot decrypt it. The droid later encounters Kyle Katarn on Nar Shaddaa and attempts to have his thugs exhort information on the hidden Valley from him, but Kyle frees himself from the goons and steals the disc. In his frenzied escape from Nar Shaddaa, Kyle discovers that his latent Force abilities are growing.
The holodisc reveals that Morgan has left a map at his Sulon farmhouse, as well as Rahn's lightsaber. With the blessing of Mon Mothma, Luke Skywalker, and Princess Leia, Kyle and Jan Ors undertake the quest for the Valley. On Sulon, Kyle finds the lightsaber, but the map, hidden in the tilework of the farmhouse ceiling – is missing. Jerec's lackeys have already found it, and 8t88 is on Sulon to decipher it. The droid destroys the map after recording an analysis of it and transmits the data to Jerec. Jerec's Dark Jedi minions betray the droid by severing its head, keeping the droid's memory module intact for their use. On the trail of the map, Kyle fights Yun, one of Jerec's Dark Jedi followers. He defeats Yun, but spares his life. The Dark Jedi brothers Gorc and Pic attack Kyle, and he slays them. Retrieving 8t88's head, Kyle uncovers the data inside and locates the map to the Valley.
Continuity
The storyline of the second and third Dark Forces novellas expand upon the narrative of the Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II from LucasArts. The story features a coterie of Dark Jedi villains – individual "bosses" who must be defeated to complete the game.[2]
