"Welcome to the Rimmer's Rest, best cantina in all of Nar Shaddaa."
―The bouncer's welcome — 20?cb=20250116042720 ▶️ (file info)[1]

Rimmer's Rest, also known as Smuggler's Bar, was a cantina on the urbanized moon Nar Shaddaa.[2] A place for seedy people to hang out and do business, the cantina was well stocked with numerous drinks. Rebel agent Kyle Katarn had a shoot-out with local mercenaries in the bar in 5 ABY.[3]

History

Like many cantinas all around the galaxy, it was a place for all kinds of creatures to hang out and do business, thanks both to its cosmopolitan character, and the tolerance of weapons and their use;[4] Timmy the bartender kept a blaster rifle underneath the bar table.[3]. The cantina boasted a rich arsenal of all kinds of bottles, decanters, jars, bulbs, and inhalers, with 1,241 different intoxicants. It also provided sample cuisine from every corner of the galaxy.[4]

In 5 ABY the bar was the meeting place between the information broker 8t88 and bounty hunter Boba Fett. Expecting agent Kyle Katarn, the droid wanted Fett to help extract from him information that he wanted; Fett, however, knew of Katarn's exploits on behalf of the Rebel Alliance and knowing that the man was extremely dangerous, declined 88's offer.[4] However, 8t88 found less competent backup, including a Gran and a second bounty hunter.[4]

Indeed, Katarn showed up soon after, according to the droid's invitation, expecting information concerning his father's death holding his Bryar pistol. 8t88 revealed Jerec's responsibility for Morgan's death during the Subjugation of Sulon, and his plans for the rebirth of the Empire.[3] While late to the confrontation, much to 8t88's annoyance,[4] the hirelings moved in around Katarn, leveling their blasters at him and confiscating his. The Gran warned Katarn not to move and brought up the topic of having obtained a holodisc from the home on the moon Sulon, which belonged to Katarn's father. Unable to access the disc's contents due to its encryption, 8t88 attempted to force help from Katarn, which was the actual reason for luring him there. Katarn refused, and 8t88 departed, leaving his hirelings behind to kill Katarn.

Instead of immediately shooting Katarn, the Gran took the vacated seat across the table from him and asked the Rebel agent if he remembered him from their past encounter,[4] giving Katarn the opportunity, in one swift move, to deftly throw the other thug over his shoulder, arm himself again[4][1] and slide out from the table.[4] The Gran retrieved his E-11 blaster rifle and quickly exited the room,[5] but Katarn followed him to the main bar area[3] and shot him, as did a second Gran near the bar.[5] Timmy demanded that he leave, and Katarn ran after 8t88 and the stolen holodisc.[3]

Interior of the cantina

Rimmer's Rest was situated in a larger building complex, with only one entrance via a sloping ramp, marked by a light-up snake creature (which looked like an alien hieroglyphic[4]). The cantina proper consisted of two rooms and a small hallway that connected the two. The first room had a large open space and housed the bar. The second room had three booths, each with tables and chairs.[3]

Other places of the establishment had more than a hundred booths that could accommodate both humanoids and non-humanoids, where they could make safe use of stimulant or depressant narcotics. To protect privacy (and hide the lack of hygiene) the ambient lighting was low; blinking white lights marked the aisles. Evenly spaced columns supported the ceiling, rippling with colored rings along their length; the ceiling was made of reflecting tiles.[4]

Behind the scenes

In Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II, level 1: "The Double-Cross on Nar Shaddaa" is played in and outside of Rimmer's Rest. The name "Smuggler's Bar" was first mentioned in Star Wars: Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II: The Official Strategy Guide.[6] When the player enters the room with the bar, the bartender will grumpily tell Kyle to get out of his bar, because he always causes trouble.[3]

Some events and descriptions in the cantina differ between the video game, the Dark Forces: Rebel Agent novelization and the audio dramatization; in the adaptations the bar is described much larger than what appears in the game. 8t88 finds Boba Fett in the booth in the novel, while in the dramatization Fett finds the droid first and announces his presence, saying that he prefers to arrange their business while standing. The subsequent skirmish with the thugs also differs between the game, the novel and the drama.
