"Strangely devoid of life, the oceans of Turrak are. No fish to be had. No fish at all."
"Maybe an environmental team could be of assistance? I could speak to the chancellor…"
"Grateful I would be. My thanks I give."
―Yoda and Pra-Tre Veter[2]

An environmental team,[2] also known as a science team,[1] was a Galactic Republic team sent out to investigate whenever a planet's environment was in danger or seemed to be unbalanced. During the High Republic Era,[3] decades after 382 BBY,[4] Grand Master[3] Yoda and Jedi Master Pra-Tre Veter talked about requesting the Supreme Chancellor to send an environmental team to[2] the planet[3] Turrak.[2]

After the Starlight Beacon fell into the planet Eiram's ocean[1] in 230 BBY[5] environmental teams regularly tested the planet's waters for pollution. In 228 BBY,[6] during a mission to investigate the blight, such a science team was sent out alongside the Republic Defense Coalition to test Eiram's water and how the sunken space station had affected the local environment.[1]

Description

Environmental teams were sent out by the Galactic Republic to protect a planet's environment. The chemist Perrik Droft was a member of a science team that investigated the wreckage of Starlight Beacon on Eiram[1]

Pra-Tre Veter and Yoda discussing the need to send an environmental team to Turrak

Decades after 382 BBY,[4] during the High Republic Era, Grand Master[3] Yoda helped to resolve a conflict between the Scalvi and the Crulkon[2] on the Galactic Frontier[7] planet Turrak. After the Scalvi Bree Menaren found out that the Crulkon were starving due to the dissapearance of the fish that they survived on, Menaren told his people to end the war and help their neighbors by giving them food. When Yoda told his fellow Council member Pra-Tre Veter about the lifeless ocean on Turrak, Master Veter offered to speak with the Republic Supreme Chancellor about sending an environmental team to the planet.[2]

In 230 BBY,[5] the space station Starlight Beacon was attacked and destroyed by Nihil pirates while orbiting the planet Eiram. The wreckage of the station crashed into the planet's ocean near the city Barraza, disrupting the local environment around the city by polluting the water. In the tragedy's aftermath, the Galactic Republic regularly sent out science teams to protect the environment by testing the water to confirm that no pollutions had leaked from Starlight Beacon's wreckage.[1]

Trouble on Eiram

"The fish stocks are depleted and the fishing nets are coming up empty. There are people saying that something toxic is leaking out of the wreckage, killing everything it touches."
"But the water is beeing screened regularly. Even now, the science team from our ship is about to carry out further tests to be certain."
―Fido Blick and Eve Byre[1]

During a mission to investigate the blight[1] in 228 BBY,[6] the research vessel Innovator, carrying Jedi and Republic Defense Coalition personnel, received a distress call from Eiram's Jedi outpost. When the group arrived on Eiram, an environmental team consisting of RDC volunteers was sent to investigate the planet Eiram. With the help of the Innovator's scientific equipment and knowledge, the science team was able to examine in more detail how the wreckage of Starlight Beacon had affected the local environment. While Jedi Master Eve Byre was investigating the distress call, she met the local Duros Fido Blick, who told her that in the recent weeks, people of Barraza City have gone missing and that the Eirami blame the Jedi for that. Byre reassured him that the water was screened regularly and that the science team from the Innovator is carrying out further tests.[1]

Later, an attack happened in which two members of the science team on Eiram went missing, and chemist Perrik Droft, the only person who witnessed the attack, was unconscious. Petty Officer Orlis of the Republic Defense Coalition tried to contact Byre to inform her about the attack, but Byre herself was missing. The RDC officer eventually reached Jedi Initiate Kildo, whom he informed about the missing RDC volunteers. The Youngling suggested that Orlis should continue to try to find out who attacked the science team.[1]

Return of the Drengir

After researching, the Jedi Padawan Cam Lindon and the Younglings Kildo and Tep Tep found out the the Drengir were behind the attacks and the missing people. Some of the victims were freed by the Jedi, but others, including the two members of the environmental team and Jedi Master Byre, were still missing. Orlis believed it must have been the Drengir who attacked the science team from the Innovator, but until the still unconscious Perrik Droft was well enough to be woken up from his coma, he could not be certain.[1]

The Jedi and the Eirami eventually fought the Drengir, and defeated them, driving them back into the the ocean and freeing the rest of the missing people. Three days later, the science team reported that the fish stock was already increasing. Nontheless, Petty Officer Orlis and the science team were ordered to stay on Eiram to keep continuously running tests.[1]

The Blight

"At this point, your scientific team recommends the evacuation of infected planets."
―Keven Tarr, to Lina Soh[8]

In 228 BBY,[9] the young inventor Avon Sunvale was chosen by Jedi Knight Reath Silas to be the scientist of the Kashyyyk team, a team sent to the planet Kashyyyk by the Jedi Order to investigate its affliction with the Blight. Sunvale was surprised by Silas' decision to to send a science team and she told Silas that she was not confortable beeing the sole scientist on the mission. But the Jedi Knight assured her that she was the best candidate and that other scientists from top research institutes were on call.[10]

During a meeting in the Grand Convocation Chamber, Master Analyst Keven Tarr informed Supreme Chancellor Lina Soh that her scientific team recommended the evacuatiuon of planets infected with the Blight.[8]

Behind the scenes

Environmental teams were first mentioned in a flashback in the third issue of the comic series Star Wars: Yoda, which was written by Cavan Scott[2] and published by Marvel Comics on January 25, 2023.[11] The capitalization of environmental team was confirmed by the Character Encyclopedia of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project[3] released on December 5, 2023.[12]

In the 2024 Audible original[13] Seeds of Starlight, written by George Mann[1] and the 2025 novel[14] Trials of the Jedi, written by Charles Soule,[8] both as part of the third phase of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project,[15] the environmental team was identified as science team[1] and scientific team respectively.[8]

  4. 4.0 4.1 The flashbacks of Yoda 3 take place decades after the flashbacks of Yoda 1 and Yoda 2, which in turn take place during Phase II of Star Wars: The High Republic as established by Star Wars: The High Republic Character Encyclopedia. That book dates the events of Phase II to 382 BBY.
  5. 5.0 5.1 Star Wars: Timelines
  6. 6.0 6.1 Star Wars: Timelines dates Starlight Beacon's destruction to 230 BBY. The implementation of the Guardian Protocols, which Star Wars: The High Republic Character Encyclopedia places in 229 BBY, took place one week after Starlight Beacon's fall according to The High Republic – Shadows of Starlight 1. As The High Republic Adventures (2023) 4 takes place one year and two weeks after the destruction of Starlight Beacon, it must be set in 228 BBY. Since the events of The High Republic Adventures (2023) 6 are set immediately following the fourth issue and depict the expansion of the Stormwall, the expansion must have taken place in the same year. Meanwhile, the events of "Tales from the Occlusion Zone: No Big Deal" include the Stormwall's expansion and also depict the start of Pikka Adren's pregnancy. A later story, "Tales from the Occlusion Zone: Sparks Fly," states that Adren is eight months pregnant during its events, indicating that it is set eight months after "No Big Deal," and therefore one year, eight months, and two weeks after the fall of Starlight Beacon. "Sparks Fly" is set during the Battle of Eriadu, an event that begins in The High Republic Adventures Phase III - The Wedding Spectacular. As StarWars.com Star Wars: The High Republic Chronological Reader's Guide on StarWars.com (article) (backup link) places The High Republic: Seeds of Starlight between the events of "No Big Deal" and The Wedding Spectacular, its events must also be set in 228 BBY.
