Byss was a world located in the Interior and the Deep Core regions of the galaxy. It acted as the endpoint of the Byss Run and was part of the larger Nexus Route. Discovered late in the days of the Old Republic, Byss was used as a secret throneworld by Galactic Emperor Sheev Palpatine during the reign of the Galactic Empire.

Description

Byss was a terrestrial[6] world with an eerie glow caused by its sun, and was considered to be strange.[4] From orbit, it appeared to have bands of brown covering it, each in a different shade.[4] The world was located in the Interior[2] and Deep Core regions of the galaxy at Standard Galactic Grid square K-11.[1] Byss acted as the endpoint of the Byss Run hyperspace route, which connected it to[4] the planet[7] Prakith.[4] The Byss Run was part of the larger Nexus Route,[5] which connected Byss to the Abregado system in the Core Worlds.[1]

History

Byss was the end point of the Byss Run.

Byss was the end point of the Byss Run.

Byss was only discovered late in the days of the Old Republic[4] and shared its name with homeworld of the Abyssin species.[8] The Deep Core world became important to Galactic Emperor Sheev Palpatine during the reign of the Galactic Empire.[4] Palpatine used the world as a secret throneworld and had an Imperial citadel there which Grand Vizier Mas Amedda, one of Palpatine's underlings, at one point retreated to in order to outline plans for the next ten thousand years of the Empire's New Order.[6]

In 34 ABY,[9] Chandrila Star Line's Star Cruiser Halcyon displayed a partial map of the galaxy that showed Byss on several screens while on a cruise from the Core Worlds' Chandrila system to the Outer Rim Territories.[10] Byss also featured as one of the worlds in the Interior section of the game Sector Set, which could be played in the cruiser's atrium during the cruise.[2]

Behind the scenes

In the current Star Wars canon, Byss was first mentioned on a card in the 2015 Topps Star Wars Chrome Perspectives set released by The Topps Company, Inc.[6] on August 21, 2015. It was then pictured for the first time in the thirty-sixth issue of the Star Wars: Build the Millennium Falcon magazine,[4] published around September 9, 2015.[11] The 2021 novel The High Republic: Light of the Jedi, written by Charles Soule, mentions a Byss far from the planet Hetzal Prime where systems engineers are aiding the technician Keven Tarr during the Great Hyperspace Disaster, but does not specify if it is referring to the Deep Core world or the Abyssin homeworld.[12]

The world's first in-universe appearance came in the form of being depicted on a map viewable in Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, an immersive roleplaying experience at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida[10] that opened to the public on March 1, 2022.[13] Byss originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, where it first appeared in the second issue of the Star Wars: Dark Empire comic book series, which was written by Tom Veitch, illustrated by Cam Kennedy, and published by Dark Horse Comics[14] on February 18, 1992.[15]
