- "The Jedi found me at a slightly older age than usual. Also, I'm a Kage. People from my planet remember. Our memories begin almost from birth. I remember my family, Porter. I remember my parents, I remember my siblings, I remember how it felt to be with them. I do not regret coming to the temple…but I remember what I lost."
- ―Barash Silvain, to Porter Engle
A family of Kage was from[1] the Inner Rim planet[3] Quarzite.[2] By 407 BBY,[4] the family included the female Barash Silvain,[1] her[5] parents, and her siblings.[1] Also by that year,[4] while an infant,[5] Silvain was discovered to be Force-sensitive and taken to be trained as a Jedi of the Jedi Order at the Jedi Temple on[1] the Core Worlds planet[3] Coruscant. As she became a Jedi, Silvain continued to remember her family due to her[1] eidetic memory[6] and because she had been discovered at an older age than usual.[1]
In 397 BBY,[7] Silvain confided in her close friend—the Ikkrukkian Jedi Porter Engle—about remembering her family. The Kage informed Engle that she recalled how it felt to be with her family, and although she had no regrets about being brought to the temple, she remembered what she had lost. Silvain then told Engle that with him she had found family again, and asked him if he would become her brother, which Engle accepted.[1]

Behind the scenes
- "It's complicated. It's not impossible to open that door and explore it, but doing it here in a four-issue comic series was maybe not the place to dig into it. And because Barash is from a species that remembers her life from birth, she remembers what a family is, and she remembers what she had. And she knows that the bond she has with Porter is the same."
- ―Charles Soule, on dropping the idea of Barash Silvain being a biological sibling of Porter Engle
Barash Silvain's family was first mentioned in The High Republic — The Blade 3.
Barash Silvain's family was first mentioned in flashbacks in the third issue of the 2022 comic miniseries Star Wars: The High Republic — The Blade released as part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project's[1] Phase II.[8] The issue was written by Charles Soule and published by Marvel Comics on March 1, 2023.[9]
During development for The Blade, Barash was originally envisioned as Porter Engle's biological sister and early concept art of her by artist Ario Anindito designed her as an Ikkrukkian like Engle. The idea, however, was ultimately dropped as Soule felt a four-issue miniseries was not the place to delve into the idea of the Jedi Order taking two siblings from the same family if the concept had been established within it. Soule then noted that as Silvain was from a species where she remembers her life from birth, she remembers what family is and what she had, finishing by stating that the Kage knew the bond she had with Engle was the same.[8]
