- "I don't remember my own family, but I know how they work."
- ―Porter Engle, to Barash Silvain
The Ikkrukkian male Porter Engle was part of a family before he joined the Jedi Order to be trained as a Jedi at the Jedi Temple on[1] the Core Worlds planet[2] Coruscant[1] by 407 BBY.[3] In 397 BBY,[4] Engle was informed by his close friend—the Kage Jedi Barash Silvain—that[1] she[2] remembered her family from before she joined the Order, and that with him she had found a family again. After Silvain asked Engle if he would become her brother, he told her that he did not remember his own family but knew how families worked. He added that one did not need to ask someone to be their family as sometimes they just were. The Ikkrukkian then stated while he was not an expert on being a brother to anyone, he would get better at it, accepting her request.[1]
Behind the scenes
- "It's complicated. It's not impossible to open that door and explore it, but doing it here in a four-issue comic series was maybe not the place to dig into it. And because Barash is from a species that remembers her life from birth, she remembers what a family is, and she remembers what she had. And she knows that the bond she has with Porter is the same."
- ―Charles Soule, on dropping the idea of Barash Silvain being a biological sibling of Porter Engle
Porter Engle's family was mentioned in The High Republic — The Blade 3.
Porter Engle's family was mentioned in flashbacks in the third issue of the 2022 comic miniseries Star Wars: The High Republic — The Blade released as part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project's[1] Phase II.[5] The issue was written by Charles Soule and published by Marvel Comics on March 1, 2023.[6]
During development for The Blade, Barash Silvain was originally envisioned as Engle's biological sister and early concept art of her by artist Ario Anindito designed her as an Ikkrukkian like Engle. The idea, however, was ultimately dropped as Soule felt a four-issue miniseries was not the place to delve into the idea of the Jedi Order taking two siblings from the same family if the concept had been established within it. Soule then noted that as Silvain was from a species where she remembers her life from birth, she remembers what family is and what she had, finishing by stating that the Kage knew the bond she had with Engle was the same.[5]
