- "Looks like our informant was being candid, team… We most definitely have the beginnings of a secret Imperial base over here!"
- ―F4-MF, on Vatleria
Vatleria was a dark and foggy planet located within the Vatleria system of the Outer Rim Territories. Long abandoned by its inhabitants, the world eventually became the site of an Imperial base in its stone ruins. By 0 BBY, the base was assaulted by the Rebel Four, an Alliance to Restore the Republic team, but they were defeated by machinations of the Sith Lord Darth Vader.
Description
Vatleria was a terrestrial dying planet with a breathable atmosphere covered in fog and darkness, located near more prosperous colony worlds.[4] The planet was placed within the eponymous system,[1] which itself was located within the Calaron sector[3] inside the Slice portion of the Outer Rim Territories.[2]
History
- "Surely you jest, Lord Vader. A swift defeat such as this is something that the Empire can be proud of… [choking]"
- ―An Imperial officer, interrupted by being choked by Darth Vader
The Rebel Four attack Imperials on Vatleria.
Decaying conditions on Vatleria led to its abandonment by its inhabitants long before the Galactic Civil War between the Galactic Empire and the Alliance to Restore the Republic.[4] By 0 BBY,[5] the Empire began to establish a base within Vatleria's stone ruins due to the world's proximity to successful colonies, taking advantage of the planet's foggy and dark atmosphere. An informant passed along information regarding the base to the Rebel Four, a team of Alliance operatives that included F4-MF, Falaem Onn, Grimgrim, and Soo Rcharrz. The four travelled to the ruins, where F4-MF observed Imperial stormtroopers patrolling the area outside their base.[4]
The Rebels charged in to the base, attacking the stormtroopers there. However, they were caught in traps activated by the Sith Lord Darth Vader, who was observing them through a screen. Ropes emerged that bound each of the Rebel Four and pulled them into death chambers, where they were each dispatched gruesomely. Afterward, Vader lamented to an Imperial officer that he had not been challenged and wished to fight a Jedi again. The Sith then choked the officer when they attempted to highlight the Empire's victory.[4]
Behind the scenes
Vatleria appeared in "The Rebel Four," a comic story written and illustrated by Jay Stephens and published in the ninth issue of the anthology series Star Wars Tales[4] by Dark Horse Comics on October 10, 2001.[6] The planet's name is an anagram of Latveria, the homeland of the Marvel Comics Fantastic Four supervillain Doctor Doom.[7] In spite of the comic's non-canonical status within the Legends continuity,[4] the Vatleria system was still mentioned within the 2009 reference book The Essential Atlas by Daniel Wallace and Jason Fry, which placed the system, and therefore Vatleria, in grid square T-9.[1]
