- "Like I said, we've both changed. I've done more than grow weary of the Empire. I'm afraid you'd find my politics a bit strong for your taste."
- ―Tay Kolma
Tay Kolma was a human male banker at the Bank of Kolma on the planet Chandrila during the Imperial Era. He was an old school friend of Senator Mon Mothma and at some point made the acquaintance of her daughter Leida when she was young. Kolma had two sisters named Adrine and Marsa.[4]
In 5 BBY, Kolma attended a party hosted by Mothma and her husband Perrin Fertha at their apartment on Coruscant. During the party, Mothma admitted that she could no longer pull money from her family accounts freely. Mothma claimed that she was founding a Chandrilan charitable outreach program that she ask Kolma to be the chairman of. Though Kolma asked for more information, Mothma refused to give it, stating that he was better off not knowing. Before he could inquire further, the pair were interrupted by Fertha, who wanted Mothma's help talking to some of the other guests.[4] Kolma later advised Mothma to use the services of Davo Sculdun to justify the disappearance of 400,000 credits,[6] to which she later reluctantly agreed.[7]
Kolma eventually came to regret his part in aiding the nascent rebellion, as he had lost a considerable amount of credits when several of his business interests turned sour due to the insurgent activity that he had indirectly funded. He also separated from his wife, which further isolated him from his peers. A year after arranging the meeting with Sculdun, Kolma attended the wedding celebrations of Stekan Sculdun and Leida Mothma. Witnessing the opulence and splendour of the Chandrilian festivities in comparison with his own flailing life, Kolma became resentful towards Mon Mothma, and attempted to blackmail her with knowledge of her involvement in the rebel network. Although Mothma agreed to meet with Kolma a week later on Coruscant to discuss compensating him for his losses, she also reported the development to Luthen Rael, who instead arranged Cinta Kaz to assassinate Kolma.[8]
Personality and traits
- "Typical banker. No one pays me to be original."
- ―Tay Kolma
Kolma's greed and envy ultimately led to his assassination.
Tay Kolma had white hair and tan skin.[4] Despite knowing Mothma since childhood, Kolma was willing to blackmail her in order to get his life back together after helping her fund her rebel activities. Kolma showed jealousy and resentment towards Mothma during her daughter's wedding as she was gaining the wealth she needed to fund the rebellion while his decision to help her caused him to lose his wife and money. His bitterness and threats of blackmail would eventually lead to his own death by assassination .[8]
Behind the scenes
- "There were people who were like, "I don't know if we can turn it that fast in Tay Kolma." And I'm like, "It's a year later, and he's Fredo." He's Fredo. People go Fredo. How many people do you know in your life, and then a year later, "Whoa…" I had to really sell it."
- ―Tony Gilroy
Tay Kolma is portrayed by Ben Miles[4]. According to creator Tony Gilroy, he needed to "really sell" going through with the story of Kolma's betrayal, stating that Kolma had gone "Fredo."[9] Gilroy affirmed shortly after the episode that Kolma had indeed been killed, with Mothma effectively having signed his death warrant.[10]
