Quote of the Day

I proposed this in the Senate Hall and got some support there, however considering it means editing the main page I probably need an admin's permission. I was thinking of placing a small Star Wars quote at the top of the page and it being changed maybe a couple times a week. It could be from just the movies, or the entire Star Wars Universe. I know this may be presumptious for a project that's just been started, but I think we would be able to work much more quickly and efficiently if we could have a box at the very bottom of the right column by extending the list of did you knows. All we would need in the box would be one line of text: "If you own (current project), or know it comprehensively, please go to Wookieepedia:Published_Works_Improvement_Project|Published Works Improvement Project to try and help out." New main page

Does anyone with knowledge of formatting know if there a way to remove the extra space at the top of the new main page? I tried it myself but... Adamwankenobi 04:41, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

  • I believe the code on the third line "margin-top:+.7em;" should be changed to "margin-top:0em;", if not deleted altogether. --Xwing328 17:24, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

I think the navigation box should be merged with the "Welcome to Wookieepedia" box. The "Welcome to Wookieepedia" text can be moved to the left of the top box, while the naigation links can be placed at the right of the box. Wikipedia has their main page situated thisway. Star Wars "Quote of the Day"

I think we should out on the front page, a "Quote of the day" or "Quote of the week". Someone could update this every once in a while.Please someone back me up on this.

  • I agree that a weekly change of the featured quote/picture might me more convenient than a daily change, since several days will be needed for voting if it is to be decided democratically as other features in this site. I'd rather have featured quotes than featured pictures, as the Featured Picture of the Day at Wikipedia pretty much serves the function of second featured article. However, most quotes featured at the heading of articles are only credited to the characters who said them, not the authors who wrote them, so for several of them, it'll be impossible to determine the exact wording or the source. --Ace_ETP 17:04, 19 April 2006 (UTC)

Does anyone know if they have a page on their robots and languages (andalphabets)

Pre-Republic Era

G'day. I was just wondering, is there any particular reason why (with all the new improvements recently done to the main page, including the addition of links to the articles covering all the eras of the GFFA) there's no link to the Pre-Republic Era article? Is it because it has no real starting point? The Legacy Era has no real ending point, and it's included... Is it because there's no symbol which represents the whole era? The Rakata Infinite Empire symbol would work, even if it doesn't cover the entire Pre-Republic era. I'm just saying, it's a shame the Main Page doesn't link to an article as good as the Pre-Republic Era one, specially when it's such a long and important era, including the genesis of the GFFA itself.       • But not acknowledging a period of Galactic History in the Main Page seems odd. And why wouldn't video games and novels taking place in other times but with information about the Pre-Republic era (such as "Knights of the Old Republic" or "Lando Calrissian and the Sharu") qualify as the type of work we could list in as integrating it as a story-external publishing era? (It already undeniably is a story-internal historical era). Aren't the flashbacks to Anakin Skywalker's youth in "Tatooine Ghost" sources for Rise of the Empire era information, despite the book taking place mostly in the New Republic era? Changing the search picture.

I think it would be a cool idea to change the search from Chewbacca to a Bounty Hunter (Boba Fett maybe?). For obvious reasons. (Bounty Hunters hunt. Search engines hunt too)

How about moving Chewie to the main logo? It is Wookieepedia, after all, not "Deathstarpedia." Maybe have Chewie in front of the Death Star? Hey, Mantis I saw you on the LotR wiki. Any who, I like the current logobut thiink the search image should be Chewwie on the good guys, Fett on the bad, and a Kaminian for neutral things. I know it is a lot of work but it would makethe site a lot more interesting too.

Upper righthand image

Language links

The whole point of the language links at the top was so that editors who speak a different language could access a sister site and maybe help out. Putting it under a category is less visible and (imo) makes those links inaccessible. StarNeptuneTalk to me! 19:51, 4 June 2006 (UTC)

"View Source"

I've been noticing that the "View Source" tab has been replaced a lot with the regular "Edit" tab. How/why is this? IF only Sysop and up can edit it, why are they switching it back to "Edit"?

Mods

Dates

Is there any way to convince you to change the dates of the Rise of the Empire, Rebellion, and New Republic Eras? The current dates make no sense at all. The Rise of the Empire should end in 19 BBY (formation of the Empire), the Rebellion Era should be as far back as 19 BBY, and extend until 19 ABY (the dissolution of the Empire).   • They are, I agree, arbitrary, weird, and almost nonsensical when thought of as in-universe historical periods. However, they are actually out-of-universe eras used by Lucasfilm to divide up books, movies, comics, and video games. —Silly Dan (talk) 02:18, 18 June 2006 (UTC)
  • I'm aware of they're origins, I just don't really care. They just don't make any damn sense! If they're going to be on the main page, they should be in-universe dates. There is already a separate in-universe era system (but those dates aren't all that good either). Color

I was thinking about it, and since this wiki has thousands of pages about Star Wars, I think we could pull of a weekly trivia challange thing. Not like a whole thing for money but you know, a fun little thing where contributing people come up with questions and every week we put up a new set for people to try to answer by themselves and see how much they know about Star Wars. This is going on too long so I just want to know if this is possible? -Bravedude

New Canon level

I was thinking of harrassing Lucasfilm a little with a request that they create a new level of canon. Start a petition or something. A kind of canon for obscure little magazine stories and video games in particular. I am tired, as I am sure many of us are, that video game devs with an at best shallow understanding of the intricate connections and nuances of the SW universe create cool little additions to their games because of design decisions aimed at earning money and reaching a bigger audience, or break canonical rules for the sake of making the game-designing easier and cheaper. Without knowing it contradicts established canon or complicates issues we thought we had a neat understanding of, these people make in-universe alterations and additions for out-of-universe reasons, with the result that a lot of poor sods have to go through the trouble of retconing their crap to stabilize continuity. Not to mention us poor fans who are desperately trying to see this universe as a whole, but are baffled by the lack of consistency between sources.

How would you like a new level of canon located just below C-canon that allowed video game devs to spew their fanon to their harts desire, but didn't count as C-canon unless it appeared in another source as well?

  • Nope. Video games, unless explicitly stated, are canon unless contradicted by another source. And even "obscure little magazine stories" are cannon, the only exceptions being stats found in Polyhedron mag, and even those enjoy a form of quasi-canon, similar to what you mentioned. Moreover, I doubt your petition will get far. Oh, and how are you a "poor sod" who has to "retcon their crap"? Fans don't have any say in the canocity of a product - Kwenn 15:36, 7 July 2006 (UTC)
    • I don't remember asking if it was canon. I am painfully aware it is. I was asking for opinions. And why do you doubt it could happen. It would save Leland a whole lot of retconing work to create a new level of canon, or at least put video games in the S category.
      • To what point and purpose? Why create even more overly-complex levels of canon? "Oh, well this is an official Star Wars video game, and it's part of the canon, but isn't quiiiiite as canon as that video game, because a couple of fans don't like it much."         • Are you deliberately misunderstanding? You go and do your homework (check out how KotOR and Jedi Knight have messed with the rest of continuity, giving mr. Chee a bit of extra work to do, and myself a headache), and maybe you will see that this most certainly is not a matter of a few fans not liking a some games.
          • Who are you, exactly, to have been given such a headache by some elements of a fictional universe being more fictional than other pieces of that same fiction? And yes, I'm well aware KotOR shifted the style of the era in favour of the PT and so on and so forth, but does that mean KotOR should be suddenly deemed a lower state of canon because you don't happen to agree with it? Where would the line be drawn? Dark Empire involves machines gobbling up planets, maybe that shouldn't be as canon as something else? This is not a matter of what I think is silly. This is a matter of less informed licenced creators creating works that contradict existing canon to a point where it cannot even conceivably be retconed, like KotOR's technology level. How do you retcon that?! Silly additions to the existing universe must be tolerated, since they are a matter of taste, but you shoudn't have to tolerate gross canon breach from a source that was only released to make money. My angle is that these "lesser" works be treated as less canonical becuse they were not made by the same knowledgable people who usually write the novels. Game desigers have too much else on their mind to make the kind of in-depth research we have, and therfore shouldn't be entrusted with C-canon certification, and probably wouldn't have been if not for the hordes of doe they bring to the table. And is your honest opinion that unintentional canon breach is okay, when this very site, if nothing else, has gone to the step of compiling all SW material in a way that enables us to see the universe as a whole? I have never seen this done before, and I can only assume this is why the inconsistencies have been allowed to continue for so long. I view this as a serious problem.

  • Again, how do you judge what should go in this category? Would all games simply be relegated to that category, simply because their designers apparently don't care about canon? No offense, but that's a load of osik. Besides, KotOR's tech level is easy to retcon; the galaxy enjoyed an advancement in technology with the end of the war. No post-KotOR source depicts the galaxy with the TotJ style, so there's no contradiction - Kwenn 16:32, 7 July 2006 (UTC)

Isn't the very purpose of S-canon that everything in it that isn't in violation of C-canon, can be considered C-canon as well, at least until another work surfaces to dispute that claim? If video games were put in the S-category, the problem of deciding would solve itself. Everything that contradicts canon can be disregarded, everything else can be considered healthy additions to the universe.

Unlisted categories

  • I've noticed, while looking for articles on various types of wood, that not all categories are actually listed in the "In-Universe Articles" list. I'm not talking about subcats, I'm talking about entire categories, like "Science" and "Products". I realize they have comparatively few articles, but I feel they should still be on there, since there's no way to discover that they even exist unless you search for them, and the point of the main page list is so that you don't have to do that.

Minor main page tweak

Search plugin autodiscovery

Would it be possible to incorporate search plugin autodiscovery as described here for use with the next version of Firefox (and presumably other browsers)? You can also see an example of it in use on the Wikipedia homepage.

          • I did it, yeah. The QOTD section was taking up way too much space, and stealing the main focus of the page from the Navigation, FA, and category sections. Which, at any rate, are way more important than quotes. Dissappearing Links?

I have noticed that in many important articles, such as Tatooine and Clone Trooper, links are no longer included in their featured quotes. However, other prime articles, such as Qui-Gon Jinn remain untouched in this manner. What is this all about? Totema1 21:52, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

I still remember the time when i first joined wookiepedia. I was still deciding on what my name should be. When i joined wookie, i was a astonished: This wiki had everything: long detailed and elaborate info on anything star wars,an image on everything,refrences, special behind the scens paragraphs, special paragraphs of the characters like:personality, portrayal, special info that wiki does not have, Internal links to hundreds of different articles, from the word itself, to a sentence, to simple words like :he, she, that here ETC. This wiki had everyrthing a star wars fan needed. But things started to change:

Links to articles started disappearing, articles merging and huge debates happening, then this happened: Anakin Skywalker had merged with Darth Vader. The articles were huge themselves:

Not only has this upset many people,users and general public alike, but it is as if, some wookiepedians are becoming lazy or changing wookiepedia for some bureaucratic reason.

All I'm saying is, wookiepeia should still be the same great website that everyone loves and appreciate, still the same detail, and best of all, the same material that even causal fans or critics like especially popular articles like Darth Vader. You may call me stupid, naive, a complete moron, or anything else you could think of. In short, let wookiepedia have the same glory that is had before.

  • Well, there's a topic on userbox templates, but I don't know what it is. The easiest way (I think) is to go to users with a lot of userboxes, hit their edit button, look at the code, and make your own from those examples.           • I see...I checked it with Firefox now. If "Main Page" is showing to the left of the page, try increasing the margin-left value.         • You can, but we complained that it was too much work, so Wikia seems to have removed the feature for now. Angela's latest comment says that it might be brought back (since people from other wikis specifically requested it), but with restrictions. Images

I have only just returned to Wookieepedia after a long break and now I find everyone getting worked up about image sources (It seems rather extreme, especially if the images are simply being used for user pages). Several of my uploaded pictures from way back, last year and the year before have now been deleted and it seems rather petty. How do you make the pages blue?

  • You have to modify the CSS stylesheets. You can add CSS styling to MediaWiki:Common.css which can be applied to all available skins on the wiki. In addition, each individual skin has its own stylesheet which can be used to make modifications to the styling of that skin alone. For instance, Sikon made some changes to MediaWiki:Monobook.css which changed the background color to light blue when using the monobook skin. Hi, I have an idea for Wookiepedia. Why don't we have a Colosseum page and every week, we should have a battle between two similar people from Star Wars (an example would be Young Obi-Wan .VS.
