The Shahkirin were a sentient species from the Inner Rim Territories' Shahkir system. One Shahkirin was a member of the Rebel Alliance in 2 BBY, being present at the Alliance base on the moon Yavin 4 that year. Another member of the species, Yipsit, grew up on the planet Bestine IV and served as a Resistance mechanic at its base on the moon Ajan Kloss by 35 ABY.
Biology and appearance
The Shahkirin were a sentient species[1] originating from[3] the Inner Rim Territories' Shahkir system.[2] They had two arms and two legs,[4] and a flattened head with a toothed mouth as well as eyes on its sides.[5] The species had a compressible cartilaginous skeleton, and the Shahkirin Yipsit had tan skin and gray hair[1] and was approximately half the size of an adult human in height.[4] Another Shahkirin was also of comparable size and had similar skin and hair color.[6]
Shahkirin in the galaxy
A Shahkirin was present at the Rebel Alliance base on Yavin 4.
In 2 BBY[6] and 1 BBY,[7] a goggle-wearing Shahkirin member of the Rebel Alliance was present at the Alliance base on[6] the moon Yavin 4 of the Outer Rim Territories.[8] Yipsit grew up on the cliff faces of[1] the Inner Rim[9] planet[10] Bestine IV, which imbued him with an innate confidence related to climbing.[1]
By 35 ABY,[11] Yipsit, who similarly wore mechanized magnigoggles, served as a mechanic at the Resistance base on the Outer Rim Territories moon Ajan Kloss. There, the Shahkirin helped with the refurbishment of[1] the decades-old,[12] 108-feet-tall[13] CR90 corvette[14] Tantive IV. Yipsit would confidently scale the corvette's armored hull and use his small size to crawl into access tunnels that adult humans were unable to enter.[1]
Behind the scenes
The Shahkirin species was first mentioned in Titan Magazines'[5] December 19, 2019[15] Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker – The Official Collector's Edition magazine in a preview of the character Yipsit[5] who would go on to appear in[4] the sequel trilogy film Star Wars: Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker that was released the next day.[16] Concept art of Yipsit for the film was done by Louis Wiltshire,[17] and the character was portrayed by Kiran Shah.[18]

(backup link) (screenshot) Jason Fry, co-author of The Essential Atlas and a number of maps in the current Star Wars canon (see a list here), stated his intention to create homeworlds for numerous species based on context implied from their names. This article treats the Shahkir system as one such homeworld with regard to the Shahkirin species.
