"This R5 astromech is built for adventure."
[R5-D4 objects]
"What— of course you are! You're supposed to be piloting starfighters across the galaxy and fighting tyranny!"
Peli Motto, on R5-D4, even as the droid was falling apart[6]

The R5 series astromech droid,[7] also known as the R5 line[8] was a model of R-series astromech droid[2] manufactured by Industrial Automaton.[1]

History

"Oh, come on, now. Don't be a coward. You're an astromech. Act like one!"
―Peli Motto, to R5-D4[6]

Cut-price versions of superior R2 units,[3] they were low cost, but prone to malfunctions,[9] defects, and bad attitudes.[3] Standing 0.97 meters in height,[5] they generally had shorter, cone-shaped heads[10] and were equipped with repair arms.[3] Their reputation was so bad that their manufacturer, Industrial Automaton, had to pull the model from the market to save their own reputation.[1] LX-R5 served Jedi Master Kelleran Beq.[11] R5-D4 was one of the last units produced in the R5 line.[9]

R5-D4,[6] R5-D8, R5-K6,[12] and S4 were R5 droids that served the Rebel Alliance during the Galactic Civil War.[13]
