Magick

Magick, also known as Shadow Magic, Nightsister sorcery, dark-side sorcery, Force Magic, Force Sorcery, or majik,^[2] was an aspect of the Force and supernatural technique that allowed a practitioner to wield a variety of powers connected to the dark side as well as light side of the Force. The Nightsister witches of Dathomir were wielders of magick, of whom Daka was the most powerful.

Description

An aspect of the Force,^[4] the supernatural technique known as magick, which offered great powers from both the dark and light sides of the Force,^[5][1] was known for being used by the Nightsisters of Dathomir.^[5] It usually manifested as green energies.^[6] Unlike the Jedi, who used the Force to serve the galaxy, the powers of the Nightsisters' magick focused on deception, illusion, and manipulation, serving only themselves.^[7] They regarded magick as a living thing which arose from blood, trees, and mist and flowed through their veins as well.^[3] Nightsister magick was also called Shadow Magic.^[8]

Mother Talzin was one of the Nightsisters' most powerful witches who was blessed with an extended lifespan due to magick.^[6] Talzin was able to use her magick to heal Asajj Ventress,^[9] and transform Savage Opress into a physically enhanced brute.^[10] She was able to use magick to heal Maul's mental damage, which had driven him mad.^[11] Talzin was able to combine her magick with voodoo to torture her enemies and communicate with them from afar. Old Daka, who was regarded as the most powerful magick user,^[12] was able to use her magic Chant of Resurrection to resurrect numerous Nightsisters mummies and bring them back as zombies.^[13] The Chant of Resurrection again was used by the Great Mothers with the Night Troopers of the Grand Admiral Thrawn.^[14] Magick could also be used to conjure invisibility potions, create illusions, form energy shields, and teleport.^[6] Nightsister Merrin possessed the ability to teleport through the use of magick. Magick could be used to hide starships from detection.^[7]

One of the last Nightsisters, Shelish, described Nightsister magick very similarly to the Force: as a living thing that arises from blood, trees, and mist. Anyone could learn to use magick, so long as they were Force-sensitive, as demonstrated by the Smuggler; however, first, they must breathe in a special energized mist which infuses their blood with ichor. The ichor, which appeared as a green mist,^[13] could then be used for magick. A special talisman was used during the ritual to energize said mist.^[3] Through artifacts, beings who, unlike the Nightsisters, did not know how to use magick, could use it. An artifact from Dathomir created by an unknown person with knowledge of the Force was an example of such an artifact. The Jedi Cal Kestis used it to pass through obstacles such as energy barriers.^[15]

Notably, this ichor could also be used to create items composed of the substance, from a blackroot drink in a goblet that Talzin made for Count Dooku,^[9] to weapons such as Talzin's sword^[16] to cybernetic appendages such as the legs Talzin made for Maul. However, damaging these items would often cause them to revert back into ichor,^[17] just as sufficiently damaging a being infused with ichor would cause it to leave their body, removing whatever effect it had on them, as it did with Savage Opress.^[18]

History

Republic Era

During the Battle of Dathomir, Old Daka used the Chant of Resurrection to resurrect dead Nightsisters to combat the Separatist attack.^[13] Following the massacre on Dathomir, Talzin used a great deal of her magick to heal her son, Maul's mind, restore his memories, and equip him with new metal legs. She was successful^[11] but soon became trapped in the spirit world.^[19] Talzin attempted to return to the physical world by using a sphere supplied by the Frangawl Cult but failed due to interference from Jedi Master Mace Windu and Naboo representative Jar Jar Binks.^[1] Despite the setback, Talzin was able to stay in contact with Maul by appearing as a green mist.^[20] Talzin attempted to regain her physical body by using Dooku as a sacrifice. At first, she was successful, but she was ultimately killed by General Grievous.^[19]

Imperial Era

When Jedi Padawan Cal Kestis explored Dathomir in search for a Zeffo Astrium, Nightsister Merrin used magick to reanimate her dead sisters in an attempt to stop him from trespassing. She used it again to immobilize Fallen Jedi Master Taron Malicos and bury him alive in the Tomb of Kujet. Merrin's joining of Kestis' team, the Mantis crew, would bring the use of the Nightsisters' magick to the crew's fight against the Galactic Empire.^[7] Merrin possessed an artifact from Dathomir that allowed the wielder to briefly channel the magick of the Nightsisters to pass through obstacles such as energy barriers. She would give this artifact to Kestis five years after they met and became allies.^[15]

New Republic Era

During the New Republic Era, the Great Mothers, who had allied with Grand Admiral Thrawn to leave the planet Peridea, located in another galaxy, to go to Dathomir, used the Chant of Resurrection on the Admiral's soldiers who died in the battle against Ahsoka Tano, Sabine Wren and Ezra Bridger so that the Night Troopers would return as undead to delay the trio of Force-sensitives, which allowed their departure from the planet.^[14]
