Publisher's summary
Master and apprentice.
Chosen by fate. Destined for conflict.
Anakin Skywalker knows that Obi-Wan Kenobi did not choose him as an apprentice. Instead, it was the dying wish of Obi-Wan's own Master, Qui-Gon Jinn, that brought them together. Now, Anakin is beginning to doubt his Master's commitment…and Obi-Wan is starting to wonder if he will ever be as good a Master as Qui-Gon.
With these things in mind, Master and apprentice head out on a training exercise that soon turns into a struggle to survive. A squad of bounty hunters has been hired to capture the Jedi—and they will stop at nothing to do it. Anakin and Obi-Wan must avoid the traps and ambushes…and try to discover who is behind the deadly Jedi hunt.
Plot summary
In 27 BBY, Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi and his Padawan Anakin Skywalker travel to the icy world of Ragoon VI to undergo a survival and tracking exercise. The test, designed to strengthen their bond and build Anakin’s field experience, involves locating a fellow Jedi, Wren Honoran, who has hidden himself somewhere on the desolate, uninhabited planet.
Soon after their arrival, the Jedi encounter multiple suspicious hazards, including unusually aggressive Malia beasts and a sudden cave flood. These incidents raise Obi-Wan’s suspicions that the exercise has been compromised. While searching further, they come across a young girl named Floria, who claims to have been separated from her brother. Anakin insists on helping her, though Obi-Wan remains cautious.
Floria is revealed to be a bounty hunter, part of a six-person team hired to capture the Jedi. Her brother Dane, and four other hunters—Teleq, Mol Arcasite, Hunti Pereg, and an unnamed Tursha—are coordinating an ambush. However, after witnessing the Jedi’s mercy and realizing the danger of their assignment, Floria and Dane change sides and assist the Jedi. Obi-Wan and Anakin are forced to fight off each of the hunters while searching for Honoran. They disable Mol Arcasite’s attack ship, defeat Teleq—who had taken Honoran captive—and outmaneuver the Tursha hunter, who attempts to entrap them with a Stokhli spray stick and thermal detonators.
After rescuing Wren Honoran, the Jedi are confronted by a wounded man claiming to be Hunti Pereg. In reality, the figure is Granta Omega, the mastermind behind the ambush. Omega, the son of a fallen Jedi, is a mysterious figure who registers as a void in the Force. He briefly taunts the Jedi before escaping undetected, having orchestrated the entire mission to observe their tactics and test their limits.
Upon returning to Coruscant, Obi-Wan and Anakin debrief at Dexter Jettster’s diner, reflecting on the ordeal and the emergence of this new threat. Though the Jedi survive the mission and rescue Honoran, the encounter marks their first with Omega, who begins positioning himself as a growing adversary to the Jedi Order.
Continuity
In this story, Obi-Wan warned Anakin about using absolute statements – a lesson he memorably repeated during their fateful duel in Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith (2005). The novel also revealed that Didi Oddo sold his café to Dexter Jettster, who then ran it as a greasy spoon dinner.[2]
